Profiling and Predicting Faculty Assessment Behavior in Surgical Education.

OBJECTIVE: To study and profile the digital assessment behaviors of surgical faculty and residents, and to build a classifier to predict assessment completion, enhancing formative feedback initiatives. BACKGROUND: As competency-based paradigms are integrated into surgical training, developing digital education tools for measuring competency and providing rapid feedback is crucial. Simply making assessments available is inadequate and results in disappointingly low user participation. To optimize engagement and efficacy of these tools, user assessment behaviors need to be studied. METHODS: Us

Teachers' literacy-related knowledge and self-perceptions in relation to preparation and experience.

After rating their own literacy-related knowledge in three areas (knowledge about reading/reading development, phonemic awareness/phonics, and morpheme awareness/structural analysis), graduate teacher-education students completed five tasks intended to measure their actual disciplinary knowledge in these areas. Teachers with high levels of prior background (i.e., course preparation and experience) rated themselves as significantly more knowledgeable than did low-background teachers in all areas; high-background participants also significantly outperformed low-background participants on all tas

Diminished Health Returns of Educational Attainment Among Immigrant Adults in the United States.

Objectives: Marginalization-related diminished returns (MDRs) refer to weaker health effects of educational attainment for socially marginalized groups compared to the socially privileged groups. Most of the existing literature on MDRs, however, has focused on marginalization due to race, ethnicity, and sexual orientation. Thus, very limited information exists on MDRs of educational attainment among immigrant populations in the United States. Aims: Building on the MDRs framework and using a nationally representative sample of US adults, we compared immigrant and native-born adults for the effe

Smoking Disparities by Level of Educational Attainment and Birth Cohort in the U.S.

INTRODUCTION: Little is known about how U.S. smoking patterns of initiation, cessation, and intensity vary by birth cohort across education levels or how these patterns may be driven by other demographic characteristics. METHODS: Smoking data for adults aged ≥25 years was obtained from the National Health Interview Surveys 1966-2018. Age-period-cohort models were developed to estimate the probabilities of smoking initiation, cessation, intensity, and prevalence by age, cohort, calendar year, and gender for education levels: ≤8th grade, 9th-11th grade, high school graduate or GED, some college

The Effect of Simulation-Based Electroconvulsive Therapy Education on Perception and Knowledge of Nursing Students: A Semiexperimental Study.

OBJECTIVES: Despite the recognized benefits and safety of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) for treating mental disorders, negative perceptions persist among both the public and mental health professionals. This stigma is often rooted in historical practices and media portrayals, despite modern advancements in the technique. This study aimed to assess the impact of simulation-based ECT education on nursing students' perceptions and knowledge regarding ECT before and after the procedure. METHODS: This study was planned to use a single-group pretest and posttest quasi-experimental design with a 3

Residents' Experiences with Personalized Learning in Postgraduate Training; Going Beyond Competency Based Medical Education.

INTRODUCTION: Personalization is increasingly emphasized in postgraduate medical education. While competency-based medical education (CBME) is theoretically positioned to support personalization, practical challenges such as fixed learning outcomes, workplace constraints, time-fixed rotations, and assessment requirements, often limit its realization. This case study aimed to explore how residents experience and make use of individualized development trajectories within a program that combined fixed outcomes with flexible program components. METHOD: We conducted a case study using semi-structu

Identifying factors that underpin student decisions to pursue the Doctor of Pharmacy degree at Atlantic Canadian Universities: Protocol for a mixed methods study.

Several international studies have investigated academic decision-making in higher education, but there is limited research on students' choice to study pharmacy in the Canadian context. While there is some variation across jurisdictions, decisions to enroll in a particular degree program fall into several decision-making domains (e.g., personal, family, institutional, social, and economic). These findings have been theorized in various ways, for example, through social cognitive theory and social reproduction theory. The purpose of this study is to gain a better understanding of the personal,

Estimation of Air Travel-Related Greenhouse Gas Emissions for the In-Person Anesthesiology Oral Board Examination.

Background With an increased focus on climate change in graduate medical education (GME), the environmental implications of travel for board certification examinations remain poorly described. The return to the mandatory in-person applied examination (AE) for board eligible anesthesiologists presents potentially sizeable greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions when compared to the virtual format administered during the COVID-19 pandemic. Objective To estimate the GHG emissions from air travel to the in-person AE and discuss its implications for various specialties as they return to in-person examinatio

Breaking the Mold: Partnering with the National Institutes of Health Intramural Research Program to Accelerate PhD Training.

Immunology is an increasingly interdisciplinary field. Here we describe a new model for interinstitutional graduate training as partnerships between complementary laboratories. This collaborative model reduces time to graduation without compromising productivity or alumni outcomes. We offer our experience with one such program and thoughts on the ingredients for their success. Despite tremendous recent advances in technology, communications, and the translation of basic scientific discoveries into new diagnostics and therapies for human diseases, graduate training in immunology and other areas

Adapting postdoctoral training to interdisciplinary science in the 21st century: the Cancer Prevention Fellowship Program at the National Cancer Institute.

Preparing junior scientists for careers in the health sciences has become an immense challenge for many reasons, including the emerging demand for multidisciplinary approaches to solving problems in the health sciences. For those choosing careers in hybrid and interdisciplinary fields, the "traditional" postdoctoral training model may not perform well, particularly in light of other problems that plague postdoctoral success. New approaches are required. Using the interdisciplinary field of cancer prevention as an example, the authors describe the Cancer Prevention Fellowship Program (CPFP) of
