Facial Trauma in E-Scooter vs. Bicycle Accidents: A Retrospective Comparative Analysis in a Metropolitan Setting.

AIM: The increasing prevalence of E-Scooters has led to a rise in related injuries, particularly affecting the maxillofacial region. While bicycle-related facial trauma is well-documented, comparative data on E-Scooter injuries remain rare. This study aims to analyze and compare facial trauma patterns between E-Scooter and bicycle accidents in a metropolitan setting. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted at the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, including patients with facial trauma from E-Scooter or bicycle accidents between January 2023 and July 2024. Demo

Patterns of maxillofacial injuries related to interaction with horses.

PURPOSE: Studies of trauma patients have described patterns of injuries sustained from unfortunate encounters with large animals. However, the patterns of maxillofacial injuries have yet to be reported. The goal of this investigation was to describe and report on maxillofacial injuries that are associated with interaction with horses. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Charts were selected from the trauma registry by E-code at a level 1 trauma center in Portland, OR. A retrospective review was performed on charts collected from the previous 5 years (1998-2002). Data were collected according to patient, pa…

Coincidence of craniocerebral and craniofacial injuries.

PURPOSE: To determine the incidence of craniocerebral injuries in patients who experienced upper facial or midfacial traumas associated with the disorders of consciousness. To find which types of craniofacial traumas predisposed to craniocerebral injuries. To analyze a relationship between the site of the force application and the type of resultant craniocerebral injury. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study included 3,481 patients with upper facial and midfacial traumas. All 425 patients with craniofacial traumas and disorders of consciousness at the time of the event or hospital admission, were

Cochlear implantation surgery in patients with narrow facial recess.

CONCLUSION: The new method of facial recess enlargement through suspending, antedisplacing, and adhering the chorda tympani nerve to the posterior wall of the auditory canal can expose the round window, make electrode insertion easier, and preserve the function of the facial nerve and chorda tympani nerve. OBJECTIVE: To describe and report cochlear implantation surgery in patients with narrow facial recess, including surgical technique and postoperative outcomes. METHODS: Cochlear implantation surgery was performed in our hospital in 39 cases with narrow facial recess by enlarging the facial

Association of frontal and maxillary bone fractures and concomitant craniocerebral injuries in patients presenting with head trauma.

BACKGROUND: Maxillofacial fractures and craniocerebral injuries are common in patients with head trauma. These are injuries with high mortality and morbidity. Therefore, patients with head trauma should be evaluated early with a multidisciplinary approach. AIM: The association between frontal and maxillary bone fractures and concurrent craniocerebral injuries were investigated in patients presenting with head trauma in this study. The data of the patients were analyzed retrospectively. METHODS AND MATERIAL: Age and gender distributions were evaluated in frontal and maxillary fractures. Conco

Soft tissue pediatric facial trauma: a review.

Facial soft tissue injuries are common in pediatric trauma patients. Early diagnosis and definitive treatment as well as good postoperative wound care are important when dealing with soft tissue injuries, such as facial nerve and parotid injuries, animal bites, avulsive skin wounds and eyelid and ear lacerations. Children heal quickly, but they also tend to develop hypertrophic scars. Proper wound management during the healing period can help to minimize the risk of adverse scar formation. Dentists may be involved in the initial assessment of these patients. Knowledge of the diagnosis and mana

Congenital hypoplasia of the depressor anguli oris muscle in the differential diagnosis of facial paralysis.

Facial paralysis presents an interesting diagnostic challenge. Etiologies ranging from facial nerve neuromas and CPA tumors to inflammatory disease and traumatic injuries need be considered and evaluated. However, an asymmetric facial appearance may result from abnormalities of facial musculature as well as facial innervation. Two cases of congenital hypoplasia of the depressor anguli oris muscle, a child and an adult, are reviewed to examine its presentation and diagnostic differentiation from other forms of facial paralysis. Photographs presenting the facial deformity and electrodiagnostic s

Craniofacial penetration by a wooden stick.

INTRODUCTION: Penetrating craniofacial injuries caused by stick-like foreign bodies occur as a result of accidents particularly in children, and often lead to significant morbidity. CASE SUMMARY: We describe a 5-year-old boy who sustained facial trauma after falling on a wooden stick which penetrated his left cheek. At the initial visit, his vital and neurological signs were normal. However, the stick had penetrated the frontal lobe to a depth of 3cm via the orbital cavity and the anterior skull base. The stick was successfully removed while visualizing the anterior skull base in an endoscopi…

Advancements in biomarker techniques for precision and safety in facial nerve identification during head and neck surgeries: a comprehensive review.

OBJECTIVE: This review aimed to evaluate biomarkers' efficacy in enhancing facial nerve identification during head and neck surgical procedures. It summarized the literature on biomarker techniques for intraoperative visualization of the facial nerve, focusing on applications, findings, and clinical implications. INTRODUCTION: Precision is paramount in head and neck surgeries due to complex anatomical structures. In particular, facial procedures demand meticulous planning to preserve facial nerve function. Iatrogenic injuries underscore the need for advancements in nerve identification techni

[Therapy of middle ear injuries caused by explosive devices].

Forty nine wounded with the explosive injury of the middle ear were treated. The largest number of injuries were ruptures of the ear drum (79.35%), followed by the break of the ossicular chain (15.87%) and the fractures of the mastoid, along with the paralysis of the facial nerve (4.77%). In therapeutic procedure the reposition and connection of the eardrum parts and 'patch' technique were performed, and in case of perforation persistence longer than four months myringoplasty was done. Injuries of the auditory bones were solved by ossiculoplasty, and injuries of facial nerve by decompression a

Lacrimal duct injuries revisited: a retrospective review of six patients.

This is a retrospective review of 6 patients treated for lacrimal duct injuries between December 1994 and October 1997. Four patients had inferior canalicular lacerations, one had a superior laceration, and one had a combined inferior and superior laceration. Associated injuries included facial fractures (1 patient), multiple facial lacerations (2 patients), and avulsion of the medial canthus (1 patient). All patients were repaired with Crawford tubes using a semicircular technique. The mean time of lacrimal intubation was 4.2 months (range, 3.6-4.5 months). One tube fell out at an undetermine

The role of primary bone grafting in complex craniomaxillofacial trauma.

The role of craniofacial surgical techniques and immediate bone grafting in the management of complex craniofacial trauma has been reviewed. Four hundred and one patients with complex facial injuries have been treated. Two hundred and forty-one primary bone and cartilage grafts have been performed in 66 patients. Complex facial injuries should be managed by direct exposure, reduction, and fixation of all fractures utilizing interfragmentary wiring. Very comminuted or absent bone is replaced by immediate bone grafting, producing a stable skeleton without the need for external fixation devices. …

Evidence-Based Medicine for Midface/Orbit/Upper Facial Fracture Repair.

The face is one of the most common areas of traumatic injury, making up approximately 25% of all injuries in 2016. Assault, motor vehicle collision (MVC), fall, sports, occupational, and gunshot wounds (GSW) are all common causes of facial fractures, with MVC and GSW leading to significantly higher severity of injuries. Most facial fractures occur in the upper two-thirds of the face. Most facial fractures require timely assessment, diagnosis, and treatment for optimal restoration of facial structures and functions. Without proper initial management, significant complications including immediat
