Wireless optoelectronic photometers for monitoring neuronal dynamics in the deep brain.

Capabilities for recording neural activity in behaving mammals have greatly expanded our understanding of brain function. Some of the most sophisticated approaches use light delivered by an implanted fiber-optic cable to optically excite genetically encoded calcium indicators and to record the resulting changes in fluorescence. Physical constraints induced by the cables and the bulk, size, and weight of the associated fixtures complicate studies on natural behaviors, including social interactions and movements in environments that include obstacles, housings, and other complex features. Here,

Automatic Segmentation of the Retinal Nerve Fiber Layer by Means of Mathematical Morphology and Deformable Models in 2D Optical Coherence Tomography Imaging.

Glaucoma is a neurodegenerative disease process that leads to progressive damage of the optic nerve to produce visual impairment and blindness. Spectral-domain OCT technology enables peripapillary circular scans of the retina and the measurement of the thickness of the retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) for the assessment of the disease status or progression in glaucoma patients. This paper describes a new approach to segment and measure the retinal nerve fiber layer in peripapillary OCT images. The proposed method consists of two stages. In the first one, morphological operators robustly detect

Diode Laser for Laryngeal Cancer: "980 nm" and Beyond the Classic CO2.

Lasers have been used in otolaryngology for more than 40 years and are widely considered an established way of addressing laryngeal pathology, benign and malignant. Carbon dioxide (CO2) laser is considered a gold standard, but over the last 2 decades, a new technology has been developed and established in other medical specialties, not so much in Ear Nose and Throat (ENT), the diode laser. It consists of a flexible fiber that passes through a hollow guidance system and is capable of reaching certain angled spots easier than straight beam systems. Portability, lower cost, easier setup, and impr

Perrogator: A Portable Energy-Efficient Interrogator for Dynamic Monitoring of Wavelength-Based Sensors in Wearable Applications.

In this paper, we report the development of a portable energy-efficient interrogator (Perrogator) for wavelength-based optical sensors. The interrogator is based on a compact solution encompassing a white light source and the spectral convolution between the sensor and a tunable filter, which is acquired by a photodetector, where a microcontroller has two functions: (i) To control the filter tuning and to (ii) acquire the photodetector signal. Then, the data is sent to a single-board computer for further signal processing. Furthermore, the employed single-board computer has a Wi-Fi module, whi

Real-time diagnosis of cholangiocarcinoma by combining digestive endoscopy and optic fiber biosensors based on bile clusterin.

BACKGROUND: Early diagnosis of cholangiocarcinoma (CCA) remains challenging, but liquid biopsy is emerging as a promising detection strategy. Here, we identified a novel bile biomarker for CCA and developed an optic fiber biosensor integrated with digestive endoscopy for real-time diagnosis in vivo. METHODS: A total of 583 subjects and two proteomic analyses were used to screen and validate biomarkers for CCA, and then the corresponding antibodies were generated to construct a surface plasmon resonance (SPR)-based optic fiber biosensor. The diagnostic performance of the biosensor was validate

Light scattering from cervical cells throughout neoplastic progression: influence of nuclear morphology, DNA content, and chromatin texture.

A number of noninvasive fiber optic optical technologies are under development for real-time diagnosis of neoplasia. We investigate how the light scattering properties of cervical cells are affected by changes in nuclear morphology, DNA content, and chromatin texture, which occur during neoplastic progression. We used a Cyto-Savant computer-assisted image analysis system to acquire quantitative nuclear features measurements from 122 Feulgen-thionin-stained histopathologic sections of cervical tissue. A subset of the measured nuclear features was incorporated into a finite-difference time-domai

Optical Coherence Tomography Angiography in Glaucoma.

Optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) comprises different OCT-based technologies developed for non-invasive assessment and measurement of optic nerve head and retinal perfusion. Currently the most clinically established approach is based on the split spectrum amplitude decorrelation algorithm, which detects moving red blood cells and eliminates all other information. The two main clinical fields in which OCTA offers clinically useful information are investigation of the macular retina (e.g. in macular degeneration and diabetic macular disease) and glaucoma. For glaucoma, the optic ne

In situ sensing of volatile organic compounds in groundwater: first field tests of a mid-infrared fiber-optic sensing system.

A prototype mid-infrared sensor system for the determination of volatile organic pollutants in groundwater was developed and tested under real-world conditions. The sensor comprises a portable Fourier transform infrared spectrometer, coupled to the sensor head via mid-infrared transparent silver halide fiber-optic cables. A 10 cm unclad middle section of the 6-m-long fiber is coated with ethylene propylene copolymer in order to enrich the analytes within the penetration depth of the evanescent field protruding from the fiber sensor head. Design of a yeast-based bio-interface on an optical fiber SPR platform toward drug adsorption monitoring.

Yeast biomass, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, has been widely studied for removing heavy metals and organic pollutants, including pharmaceuticals. However, conventional batch methods provide limited insight into time-resolved adsorption and interfacial molecular interactions. We developed an optical fiber-based surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensor incorporating a yeast-derived bio-interface. A film formation monitoring method based on transmitted light absorbance during electroless Ni plating enabled reproducible fabrication of gold nanofilms. Yeast cells were uniformly immobilized via a spray-ba

Novel Simulation-based Awake Fiberoptic Intubation Curriculum: Pilot Study.

INTRODUCTION: Awake fiberoptic intubation is a critical skill of emergency physicians in scenarios where rapid sequence intubation may be impossible or catastrophic. While the equipment to perform awake fiberoptic intubation has become more readily available to emergency physicians, inadequate training and lack of confidence are often cited as barriers to performing the procedure. To address this, we created and studied a simulation-based awake fiberoptic intubation curriculum with the goal of improving physicians' performance of this skill. METHODS: A procedural checklist was developed and i

Force-regulated robotic diffuse reflectance spectroscopy scanning.

SIGNIFICANCE: Intraoperative discrimination between malignant and benign tissue is essential for achieving complete tumor resection while preserving healthy structures. Robotic diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS) enables automated intraoperative tissue assessment, but unregulated probe-tissue contact forces introduce spectral artifacts and risk tissue damage, limiting clinical translation. AIM: We present and evaluate an autonomous robotic DRS scanning system incorporating real-time contact force regulation to enable safe, repeatable, and large-area ex vivo tissue assessment. APPROACH: A

Fiber optic surface plasmon resonance sensor for high-sensitivity detection of MMP10, a diagnostic target for Alzheimer's disease.

The existing in vivo detection methods for Alzheimer's disease (AD) diagnostic targets have two problems of inability to detect in real time and poor recognition of ligand biocompatibility, making it difficult to effectively achieve early and rapid screening for AD. This article proposes a fiber optic surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensor with a surface-modified quercetin ligand, which successfully detects what we believe to be a novel early AD diagnostic target matrix metalloproteinase-10 (MMP10) in artificial cerebrospinal fluid. It has the characteristics of real-time detection and good bi

Comparison of the percutaneous dilatational tracheostomy with and without flexible bronchoscopy guidance in intensive care units.

BACKGROUNDS: The benefit of fiberoptic bronchoscopy (FOB) guidance during percutaneous dilatational tracheostomy (PDT) remains unclear. We aimed to compare PDT performed with and without FOB guidance in terms of procedure duration, number of attempts, and perioperative complications. METHODS: A total of 103 patients were divided into two groups, and the PDT procedure was performed either with or without FOB guidance. The primary outcome of our study was the duration of the tracheostomy procedure (PDT procedure time) and the number of attempts. The secondary outcome was the major/minor complic

Micturition Control with Activation of EUS Nerves at the Spinal Cord Using Fiber Optic Stimulation.

This study combines optogenetics and retrograde transfection techniques to functionally target external urethral sphincter (EUS)-related neurons in the spinal cord and to demonstrate a proof-of-concept approach for modulating EUS activation, thereby influencing micturition. Experiments were conducted using C57BL/6 mice, in which an AAV vector (AAV2/6-eSyn-hChR2(H134R)-EGFP) was delivered to the EUS muscle, enabling retrograde transport and subsequent expression of light-sensitive proteins in motor neuron cell bodies within the spinal cord.
