OBJECTIVE: To determine the value of surgical closure of atrial septal defects in patients over 40 years of age.
METHODS: Retrospective analysis of 76 patients (63 women, 13 men), age range 40-62 years (mean (SD) 45.8 (5.1) years), who underwent surgical repair of atrial septal defect. Pre- and postoperative clinical status (New York Heart Association (NYHA) functional class) was assessed, and ECG, x ray, and echocardiographic investigations performed. Follow up was between 1 and 17 years.
RESULTS: One operative and one late death occurred during the study period. Before operation, 47 patien

This case report presents an infant patient with the association of trisomy 7p and tetralogy of Fallot(ToF). Patients diagnosed with trisomy 7p should certainly be scheduled for an echocardiographic exam and be scanned for any CHD that may accompany it. The CHD that most frequently accompany this syndrome include atrial septal defect, ventricular septal defect, and patent ductus arteriosis. Yet, it should be known that ToF may also be present, albeit rarely.

A 4-year-old, 5.9-kg female Japanese Spitz presented with syncope and exercise intolerance. Echocardiography revealed an ostium primum atrial septal defect (ASD), a cleft mitral valve, mitral valve regurgitation (MR), and tricuspid regurgitation (TR) (velocity: 3.6 m/sec, pressure gradient: 52 mmHg), leading to a diagnosis of partial atrioventricular septal defect (AVSD) with moderate pulmonary hypertension (PH). Open-heart surgery using cardiopulmonary bypass was performed through right atriotomy. The cleft of the mitral valve was sutured with polypropylene and the AVSD was closed using an au

A 10-year-old girl with unbalanced atrioventricular septal defect and aortic arch interruption with interrupted inferior vena cava and dextrocardia had undergone a modified Norwood procedure followed by a Kawashima operation in 2002 and 2005, respectively. In 2012, she underwent Fontan operation with diversion of hepatic veins to left pulmonary artery. Intraoperative transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) was used. She was noted to have an esophageal perforation, diagnosed on the 10th postoperative day. She was managed with thoracic drainage, cervical esophagostomy, and feeding jejunostomy. Es

An unusual form of atrioventricular septal defect associated with severe subaortic obstruction is reported in a neonate who presented with intractable cardiac failure. The baby had a large defect in the atrioventricular septum allowing communication from the left ventricle to the right atrium, without interatrial or interventricular communication, and a cleft anterior mitral leaflet. The baby expired despite palliative surgery performed to bypass the subaortic stenosis.

We sought to determine the relative clinical abilities and roles of echocardiography and scintigraphy in left-to-right shunt diagnosis. M-mode echocardiographic and scintigraphic studies were analyzed in 37 adults presenting diagnostic difficulties with suspected left-to-right shunts. The historic, physical, radiographic and electrocardiographic data were frequently ambiguous. An enlarged right ventricle on M-mode echocardiography was a sensitive (100%) but not specific (55%) indicator of atrial septal defect (ASD). M-mode lacked sensitivity for ventricular septal defect (VSD) and patent ductu

Intracardiac correction of the combination of rare congenital heart lesion of anatomically corrected malposition of the great arteries, severe muscular as well as fibrous subaortic stenosis, and ventricular septal defects in the inflow and the trabecular septum in a 2 1/2 years old boy is reported. There was an additional large secundum atrial septal defect. The operation consisted of resection of the subaortic stenosis by a combined transatrial and transaortic approach, thereby regaining a wide outflow tract of the systemic ventricle. Both the ventricular and atrial septal defects were closed

Digital image processing was applied in an experimental model to study the feasibility of intravenous angiocardiography for the detection of cardiac lesions with left-to-right shunting. Methods were designed to produce ventricular and atrial septal defects (VSD, ASD) as well as patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) equivalent in pigs. After intravenous (IV) injection of 0.5-1 ml of Urografin 76% per kg body weight, digitization and computerized processing of roentgen video images recorded at a rate of 50 fields per second was performed. The radiographic images were recorded in the four-chamber view o

Transesophageal Doppler color flow imaging was performed in 19 adult patients (mean age 35 years) with an atrial septal defect demonstrated by cardiac catheterization or at surgery, or both. The transesophageal study correctly identified and classified 19 of 19 shunts in contrast to 16 of 18 shunts identified by the transthoracic approach. The area of the atrial septal defect was calculated by assuming it to be circular and taking the maximal Doppler color flow jet width at the defect site as its diameter. The pulsed Doppler sample volume was placed parallel to the shunt flow direction at the

Holt-Oram syndrome is a rare inherited disorder that causes abnormalities of the hands, arms, and the heart. Most commonly, there are defects in the carpal bones of the wrist and in the bones of the thumb along with cardiac defects such as atrial or ventricular septal defects. We report a case of Holt-Oram syndrome with a rare association of double outlet right ventricle.

Evidence of a link between headache symptoms and cardiovascular disease has rapidly grown in recent years and it is of utmost importance for the cardiologist and neurologist to be aware of this intimate connection. A brief overview of different cardiovascular diseases (namely hypertension, stroke, coronary heart disease, patent foramen ovale, atrial septal defects, atrial septal aneurisms, mitral valve prolapse, and aortic and carotid disease) that may be related to headache is presented in this article. Proposed pathophysiological mechanisms for this association and landmark studies are revie

A 13-year-old female Persian cat with a heart murmur presented with dyspnea. Thoracic radiography revealed pleural effusion and dilation of peripheral pulmonary vessels. Echocardiography showed significant enlargement of the right atrium and ventricle and left atrial appendage; an atrial septal defect (ASD) near the atrioventricular valves; and a septum-like structure below the left atrial appendage. Left-to-right shunting through the ASD was noted, with a pulmonary-to-systemic flow ratio of 2.72. The cat was diagnosed with incomplete atrioventricular septal defect (IAVSD) and supravalvular mi

BACKGROUND: We aimed to assess trends in hospitalization, outcomes, and resource utilization among patients admitted with adult congenital heart disease (ACHD).
METHODS AND RESULTS: We used the 2003-2012 US Nationwide Inpatient Sample for this study. All admissions with an ACHD were identified using standard ICD codes. Resource utilization was assessed using length of stay, invasive procedure utilization, and cost of hospitalization. There was a significant increase in the number of both simple (101%) as well as complex congenital heart disease (53%)-related admissions across 2003-2012. In ad

Current MR techniques enable both anatomical and functional evaluations of the heart. Although it is rarely used as a primary diagnostic tool in pediatric cardiology, it can be used as a valuable adjunct to echocardiography and angiography. MRI is particularly useful in clarification of morphology of complex congenital heart diseases. It is the most accurate method of determination of visceral and atrial situs. It is easy to evaluate the systemic and pulmonary venous connections that are very important for the Fontan type of operation, especially in patients with visceral heterotaxy. It facili

The cor triatriatum sinister is an uncommon congenital cardiac anomaly and reports in the literature are limited. It is often associated with other cardiac malformations, such as atrial septal defect, transposition of the great arteries, tetralogy of Fallot or atrioventricular septal defect. We present here a 6-year old boy who was diagnosed with cor triatriatum sinister, initially showing symptoms similar to mitral valve stenosis and congestive heart failure, and who underwent subsequent surgical correction using a left atrial approach. The fibromuscular membrane, separating the pulmonary vei
