Impact of Depression on Postoperative Medical and Surgical Outcomes in Spine Surgeries: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Introduction: The relationship between psychiatric disorders, including depression, and invasive interventions has been a topic of debate in recent literature. While these conditions can impact the quality of life and subjective perceptions of surgical outcomes, the literature lacks consensus regarding the association between depression and objective perioperative medical and surgical complications, especially in the neurosurgical domain. Methods: MEDLINE (PubMed), EMBASE, PsycINFO, and the Cochrane Library were queried in a comprehensive manner from inception until 10 November 2023, with no l

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and premature mortality: A narrative review of the literature.

Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is associated with a higher risk of premature mortality compared to the general population, although reported risks vary. The aim of this paper was to review studies that have examined associations between premature mortality and ADHD and consider factors that could explain variation in risk estimates. A literature search was carried out using online databases (PMC, OVID, and Scopus library) to identify relevant articles. We then considered: sample ascertainment, sample size, method of diagnosing ADHD and age at diagnosis, sex, age range for mort

Applications of Chronic Care and Transitional Care Models to Surgical Populations: A Scoping Review.

INTRODUCTION: Over 75% of adults in the United States live with at least one chronic condition, many of whom require surgery and need to see clinicians from multiple specialties. Literature on chronic care rarely describes the role of surgical teams in chronic disease management and, similarly, literature on transitions of care in surgery rarely examines long-term patient care needs. The objective of this study was to review how models of chronic disease management and transitions of care have been applied to surgical populations. METHODS: Two reviewers independently screened the results from

Development of digital learning tools for medical education with agile scrum methodology.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic has underscored the importance of digital learning tools in medical education. However, there is little evidence exploring how or whether such tools are being developed for family medicine curricula. We provide a narrative analysis of how the University of Ottawa's Department of Family Medicine (DFM) developed innovative learning tools using an interdisciplinary, research-based approach and Agile Scrum Methodology. METHODS: In March 2020, the DFM created an interdisciplinary team to support development of digital tools for medical education. Members of the DF

Clinical decision support systems' effect in reducing medication errors and adverse drug events: an expanded review from Making Healthcare Safer IV.

Clinical decision support systems (CDSSs) are used to provide alerts and recommendations on prescribing and order verification with the intent of reducing the frequency and harm of medication errors (MEs) and adverse drug events (ADEs). This review assessed recent evidence on the effects of CDSSs on reducing MEs and ADEs. Related implementation outcomes such as alert overrides and unintended consequences of use were also assessed, and literature around the effective implementation of CDSSs was summarised. The review followed processes proposed by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality

Self-measurement of blood pressure at home using a cuff device for change in blood pressure levels: systematic review and meta-analysis.

The effect of self-measurement of blood pressure (BP) at home (home BP measurement, HBPM) has been evaluated over the past decade. This meta-analysis included the latest studies to determine whether HBPM reduced BP (PROSPERO ID: CRD42023442225). PubMed, Cochrane Library Database, and IchuShi-Web were searched for randomized controlled trials after the year 2000 which demonstrated the effect of HBPM on BP change compared with usual care (UC). Overall, 65 articles (n = 21,053; 63 based on patients with hypertension) were included. The systolic/diastolic BP reduction was significantly greater in
