Modeling spatially dependent count time series data using COM-poisson INGARCH Models.

Count time series frequently exhibit serial dependence and either overdispersion or underdispersion relative to the Poisson equidispersion assumption. When such counts are observed across multiple locations, spatial dependence often arises, resulting in complex spatio-temporal dependency structures that are not adequately accommodated by standard integer-valued generalized autoregressive conditional heteroskedasticity (INGARCH) models. To address these challenges, this study proposes a spatial Conway-Maxwell-Poisson INGARCH (SP-COM-INGARCH) framework that jointly models temporal dependence, sp

Methods for Adjusting for Covariate Measurement Error in Flexible Modeling of Functional Form: Designing a Blinded, Controlled Neutral Comparison Simulation Study.

This article describes the design of a neutral comparison study in the context of empirical studies where the interest is in learning the functional relationship between a continuous error-prone exposure variable and a binary outcome. The performance of combinations of measurement error correction methods and flexible regression modeling techniques was compared using a simulation study. The project involved four independent teams, one devoted to Data Generation and Evaluation and the other three to specific Methods of measurement error correction (regression-calibration and multiple imputation

Everything All at Once: On Choosing an Estimand for Multi-component Environmental Exposures.

Many research questions-particularly those in environmental health-do not involve binary exposures. In environmental epidemiology, this includes multivariate exposure mixtures with nondiscrete components. Causal inference estimands and estimators to quantify the relationship between an exposure mixture and an outcome are relatively few. We propose an approach to quantify a relationship between a shift in the exposure mixture and the outcome-either in a single timepoint or longitudinal setting. The shift in the exposure mixture can be defined flexibly in terms of shifting one or more components

Joint modeling with generalized item response theory model family and response time model: Enhancing model structural flexibility and data-fitting adequacy.

In this study, we propose a joint hierarchical model that combines a family of item response theory (IRT) models with a log-normal response time (RT) model to analyze item responses and response times. By incorporating RTs as auxiliary information, we improve the accuracy of latent trait estimation, thereby facilitating a deeper understanding of examinee performance. Additionally, we explore the use of either identical or distinct link functions across different items, allowing us to optimize IRT models for each item and improve overall model fit. We further investigate scenarios in which the

Increasing the resolution of malaria early warning systems for use by local health actors.

BACKGROUND: The increasing availability of electronic health system data and remotely-sensed environmental variables has led to the emergence of statistical models capable of producing malaria forecasts. Many of these models have been operationalized into malaria early warning systems (MEWSs), which provide predictions of malaria dynamics several months in advance at national and regional levels. However, MEWSs rarely produce predictions at the village-level, the operational scale of community health systems and the first point of contact for the majority of rural populations in malaria-endemi

A comparison of various imputation algorithms for missing data.

BACKGROUND: Many datasets in medicine and other branches of science are incomplete. In this article we compare various imputation algorithms for missing data. OBJECTIVES: We take the point of view that it has already been decided that the imputation should be carried out using multiple imputation by chained equation and the only decision left is that of a subroutine for the one-dimensional imputations. The subroutines to be compared are predictive mean matching, weighted predictive mean matching, sampling, classification or regression trees and random forests. METHODS: We compare these subro

How to Deal With Darkness: Modeling and Visualization of Zero-Inflated Personal Light Exposure Data on a Logarithmic Scale.

Measuring and analyzing personal light exposure has become increasingly important in circadian and myopia research. Very small measurement values in light exposure patterns, especially zero, are regularly recorded in field studies. These zero-lux values are problematic for commonly applied logarithmic transformations and should neither be dismissed nor be unduly influential in visualizations and statistical modeling. We compare 4 ways to visualize such data on a linear, logarithmic, hybrid, or symlog scale, and we model the light exposure patterns with a generalized additive model by removing

Comparison of ARIMA and FB-Prophet time series models for the prediction of national and regional malaria incidence in Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Within sub-Saharan Africa, Uganda carries the third largest burden of malaria with 5% of global cases. Due to the stochastic nature of malaria incidence, resource allocation of preventive measures, rapid diagnostic tests, and chemotherapeutics is a significant challenge. To better identify areas at risk and address the challenge of resource allocation, this study aimed to: (1) characterize national and regional malaria incidence in Uganda, and (2) compare the performance of time series models in predicting malaria incidence at national and regional levels. METHODS: Aggregated data

Forecasting Malaria in Indian States: A Time Series Approach with R Shiny Integration.

Malaria remains a significant public health challenge in many regions, necessitating robust predictive models to aid in its management and prevention. This study focuses on developing and evaluating time series models for forecasting malaria cases across eight Indian states: Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Odisha, Tripura, and Uttar Pradesh. We employed various modeling approaches, including polynomial regression with seasonal components, log-transformed polynomial regression, lagged difference models, and ARIMA models, to capture the temporal dynamics of malaria inci

Prediction model protocols indicate better adherence to recommended guidelines for study conduct and reporting.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Protocols are invaluable documents for any research study, especially for prediction model studies. However, the mere existence of a protocol is insufficient if key details are omitted. We reviewed the reporting content and details of the proposed design and methods reported in published protocols for prediction model research. METHODS: We searched MEDLINE, Embase, and the Web of Science Core Collection for protocols for studies developing or validating a diagnostic or prognostic model using any modeling approach in any clinical area. We screened protocols published

A probabilistic model of relapse in drug addiction.

More than 60% of individuals recovering from substance use disorder relapse within one year. Some will resume drug consumption even after decades of abstinence. The cognitive and psychological mechanisms that lead to relapse are not completely understood, but stressful life experiences and external stimuli that are associated with past drug-taking are known to play a primary role. Stressors and cues elicit memories of drug-induced euphoria and the expectation of relief from current anxiety, igniting an intense craving to use again; positive experiences and supportive environments may mitigate

Dynamic models augmented by hierarchical data: an application of estimating HIV epidemics at sub-national level.

Dynamic models have been successfully used in producing estimates of HIV epidemics at the national level due to their epidemiological nature and their ability to estimate prevalence, incidence, and mortality rates simultaneously. Recently, HIV interventions and policies have required more information at sub-national levels to support local planning, decision-making and resource allocation. Unfortunately, many areas lack sufficient data for deriving stable and reliable results, and this is a critical technical barrier to more stratified estimates. One solution is to borrow information from othe

Systematic review highlights high risk of bias of clinical prediction models for blood transfusion in patients undergoing elective surgery.

BACKGROUND: Blood transfusion can be a lifesaving intervention after perioperative blood loss. Many prediction models have been developed to identify patients most likely to require blood transfusion during elective surgery, but it is unclear whether any are suitable for clinical practice. STUDY DESIGN AND SETTING: We conducted a systematic review, searching MEDLINE, Embase, PubMed, The Cochrane Library, Transfusion Evidence Library, Scopus, and Web of Science databases for studies reporting the development or validation of a blood transfusion prediction model in elective surgery patients bet

Causal inference with longitudinal data subject to irregular assessment times.

Data collected in the context of usual care present a rich source of longitudinal data for research, but often require analyses that simultaneously enable causal inferences from observational data while handling irregular and informative assessment times. An inverse-weighting approach to this was recently proposed, and handles the case where the assessment times are at random (ie, conditionally independent of the outcome process given the observed history). In this paper, we extend the inverse-weighting approach to handle a special case of assessment not at random, where assessment and outcome

Three-dimensional lumbar spine generation using variational autoencoder.

The disease analysis of the lumbar spine often requires a large number of three-dimensional (3D) models. Currently, there is a lack of 3D model of the lumbar spine for research, especially for the diseases such as scoliosis where it is difficult to collect sufficient data in a short period of time. To solve this problem, we develop an end-to-end network based on 3D variational autoencoder for randomly generating 3D lumbar spine model. In this network, the dual path encoder structure is used to fit two individual variables, i.e., mean and variance. Spatial coordinate attention modules are added

Pairwise likelihood estimation of latent autoregressive count models.

Latent autoregressive models are useful time series models for the analysis of infectious disease data. Evaluation of the likelihood function of latent autoregressive models is intractable and its approximation through simulation-based methods appears as a standard practice. Although simulation methods may make the inferential problem feasible, they are often computationally intensive and the quality of the numerical approximation may be difficult to assess. We consider instead a weighted pairwise likelihood approach and explore several computational and methodological aspects including estima

A rough set-based measurement model study on high-speed railway safety operation.

Aiming to solve the safety problems of high-speed railway operation and management, one new method is urgently needed to construct on the basis of the rough set theory and the uncertainty measurement theory. The method should carefully consider every factor of high-speed railway operation that realizes the measurement indexes of its safety operation. After analyzing the factors that influence high-speed railway safety operation in detail, a rough measurement model is finally constructed to describe the operation process. Based on the above considerations, this paper redistricts the safety infl

Predicting local malaria exposure using a Lasso-based two-level cross validation algorithm.

Recent studies have highlighted the importance of local environmental factors to determine the fine-scale heterogeneity of malaria transmission and exposure to the vector. In this work, we compare a classical GLM model with backward selection with different versions of an automatic LASSO-based algorithm with 2-level cross-validation aiming to build a predictive model of the space and time dependent individual exposure to the malaria vector, using entomological and environmental data from a cohort study in Benin. Although the GLM can outperform the LASSO model with appropriate engineering, the

[Application of ARIMA model on prediction of malaria incidence].

OBJECTIVE: To predict the incidence of local malaria of Hubei Province applying the Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average model (ARIMA). METHODS: SPSS 13.0 software was applied to construct the ARIMA model based on the monthly local malaria incidence in Hubei Province from 2004 to 2009. The local malaria incidence data of 2010 were used for model validation and evaluation. RESULTS: The model of ARIMA (1, 1, 1) (1, 1, 0)12 was tested as relatively the best optimal with the AIC of 76.085 and SBC of 84.395. All the actual incidence data were in the range of 95% CI of predicted value of the m

Estimating the optimal control of zoonotic visceral leishmaniasis by the use of a mathematical model.

We argue that the strategy of culling infected dogs is not the most efficient way to control zoonotic visceral leishmaniasis (ZVL) and that, in the presence of alternative control strategies with better potential results, official programs of compulsory culling adopted by some countries are inefficient and unethical. We base our arguments on a mathematical model for the study of control strategies against ZVL, which allows the comparison of the efficacies of 5, alternative strategies. We demonstrate that the culling program, previously questioned on both theoretical and practical grounds is th
