Under the National Strategy for Sexual Health and HIV, most patients seeking or requiring routine sexual health care are now offered the option of being treated by the primary health care team, rather than a specialised genito-urinary medicine clinic. Taking a sexual history and making a risk assessment is a key skill for making a diagnosis and care plan. This article offers a structured approach to this task, particularly for nurses, midwives and other community health professionals. It also describes the often sensitive core questions that the professional may need to ask in order to obtain

Community-based geriatric case managers work with an increasingly frail older population in need of advance care planning throughout the end of life. However, little is known regarding factors that influence their professional practices in this area. This qualitative study used four focus groups to explore case managers' (N = 27) perceptions of facilitators and barriers to advance care planning practices. Themes from the study suggest that case managers view five key influences that appear to either assist or impede practices, depending on case manager's perceptions and experiences. Themes inc

BACKGROUND: Nurses are key stakeholders in telehealth intervention implementation. Nurses are also instrumental in the management of perinatal depression, a common complication during pregnancy and postpartum. Telehealth interventions are a promising approach to addressing perinatal depression; however, its successful integration into routine maternal care remains challenging, particularly across diverse clinical settings. This qualitative study examined how registered nurses in the United States and other clinical staff perceived and navigated the implementation of a telehealth perinatal depr

People with serious mental illness are at high-risk for physical illnesses and premature death, and nurses can contribute to ensuring mental health services address these risks. There is very little research examining the role of nurses in mental health who provide physical health care. To identify the levels of participation in physical health care of people with serious mental illness (SMI), a national Internet-based survey of nurses working in mental health in Australia was conducted (n = 643). The survey included an adapted version of the Robson and Haddad Physical Health Attitude Scale. D

BACKGROUND: Children with intellectual disabilities experience poorer health outcomes and persistent inequities in hospital care. No previous review has integrated perspectives of families, registered nurses (RNs), nursing students and nurse educators to examine how family partnerships, workforce preparation and clinical practice intersect. This review synthesises evidence on hospital care and support for children with intellectual disabilities.
METHODS: Following PRISMA guidelines, four databases (CINAHL, MEDLINE, APA PsycINFO and Embase) were searched from inception to October 2025. Study q

INTRODUCTION: Gender-based violence (GBV) constitutes a major public health problem and a challenge for healthcare systems, in which Primary Care plays a key role in early detection and intervention. Adequate training and competence among healthcare professionals are essential to ensure effective care.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate theoretical knowledge and self-perceived professional preparedness regarding GBV care protocols among Primary Care nurses working in the Galician Health Service (Sergas).
METHODOLOGY: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted with 317 Primary Care nurses. Data co

BACKGROUND: Adults discharged home with a tracheostomy face preventable risks of tube dislodgement, obstruction, infection, and delayed emergency response. Consistent discharge education and interdisciplinary communication can support safe transitions from hospital to home.
LOCAL PROBLEM: On an adult surgical telemetry unit at an academic medical center, tracheostomy discharge education and documentation were inconsistent across the electronic health record. Variable handoff practices between registered nurses and respiratory therapists contributed to fragmented care.
METHODS: This quality i

Nurse scientists play a critical role in advancing the nursing field and improving health, but early career faculty can enter the academic ranks with little training in how to effectively establish, manage, and grow a program of research (POR) or weather the storms that accompany a research-intensive academic path. This can lead many nurse scientists to leave academic positions or even abandon their POR altogether. This is problematic at a societal level because nurse scientists bring a unique and valuable holistic perspective to scientific inquiry and an orientation towards community-based wo

Chronic constipation, which is common and often difficult to treat, has numerous origins, including neurological and other conditions, and adverse reactions to drugs, especially opioids. Chronic functional constipation lacks a clear underlying cause. Increasing evidence suggests that transanal irrigation (TAI) aids faecal evacuation and is well tolerated in many people with bowel dysfunction who do not adequately respond to first-line treatments. Recent papers offer insights that help nurses and other healthcare professionals implement best practice in the community, including discussing any n

This study aimed to develop a computer application (software) for use by visiting nurses, physicians, and patients/caregivers, to support their care of long-term indwelling urinary catheters in the community. Development of this application involved: (1) confirmation of the intended purpose, users, and application construction; (2) establishment of the functional requirements for data sharing and communication among visiting nurses, physicians, and patients/caregivers; (3) design of three constituent "versions" of the application to be used by visiting nurses, physicians, and patients/caregive

In developing countries primary health care workers are being trained to manage and treat acute respiratory infections with a protocol developed by the WHO. We tested the ability of nurses and nursing assistants in Swaziland to recognise the signs and symptoms of pneumonia; with the results of a paediatrician's examination as "gold standard", sensitivities and specificities were calculated. Danger signs of stridor and abnormal sleepiness were poorly recognised (sensitivity 0-50%) by the health care workers, as was audible wheeze. Severe undernutrition, tachypnoea, and chest wall indrawing were

Because so many home care clients have Foley catheters, nurses may overlook the emotional impact that the catheter has on the client. Nurses need sensitivity and knowledge to help clients establish satisfying patterns for catheter management.

OBJECTIVE: Death education is relevant to end-of-life nursing care, yet community nurses in primary care often receive little structured preparation in this area. This study developed a WeChat public platform-based death education program through expert consultation and evaluated changes in community nurses' attitudes toward death and death coping skills before and after the program.
METHODS: We conducted a prospective before-and-after study in 10 community health centers in Chengdu, China, using a single-group design. The program was developed through two rounds of Delphi consultation and de

Clinical placements in correctional settings offer nursing students unique opportunities for learning mental health and community health concepts, including social justice, restorative justice and the impact of poverty and marginalization on health and life choices. Although there is some evidence to suggest that a small number of nursing programs use clinical placements in correctional settings, relatively little scholarly literature addresses nursing education in such settings, or the implications for nursing leadership when students do have an opportunity to learn in correctional settings.

The total number of Americans age 65 and older is expected to nearly double by 2060, and the number of Americans admitted to nursing homes is likewise anticipated to escalate. Studies have found living alone to be an important risk factor for mortality. Yet little is known about possible spillover health effects of living in a community where many elderly residents live alone. Even less is known about whether these risks persist after entering nursing homes. Our study population consisted of 874,162 US elderly adults newly admitted to nursing homes in 2011, as identified from the 3.0 Minimum D
