The influence of maternal and paternal education on birth outcomes: an analysis of the Ottawa and Kingston (OaK) birth cohort.

BACKGROUND: Education is considered one of the most robust determinants of health. However, it is unclear whether maternal education and paternal education have differential impacts on perinatal health outcomes. We assess maternal and paternal education differences and their association with adverse birth outcomes in a large birth cohort from Ontario, Canada. METHODS: The OaK Birth Cohort recruited patients from Ontario, Canada, between October 2002 and April 2009. We recruited mothers were recruited between 12 and 20 weeks' gestation and collected both mother and infant data. The final sampl

The Effect of Paternal Skin-to-Skin Care: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis of Randomized Control Trials.

BACKGROUND: Research about skin-to-skin care (SSC) experiences in early period after birth has focused on mothers and infants. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine the outcomes of paternal skin-to-skin care (P-SSC) in both fathers and infants. METHODS: The Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase, CINAHL, PsycInfo, Airiti Library, and Google Scholar were searched for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that reported outcomes of P-SSC in both fathers and infants. We calculated pooled mean differences (MDs) and 95% confidence intervals (CI

Case Report: A Paternal 20q13.2-q13.32 Deletion Patient With Growth Retardation Improved by Growth Hormone.

Interstitial chromosome 20q deletions, containing GNAS imprinted locus, are rarely reported in the past. Hereby, we presented a Chinese boy with a novel 4.36 Mb deletion at paternal 20q13.2-13.32, showing feeding difficulty, malnutrition, short stature, lower limb asymmetry, sightly abnormal facial appearance and mild intellectual abnormality. With 3 years' growth hormone treatment, his height was increased from 90 to 113.5 cm. This report is the first time to describe the outcome of clinical treatment on a patient with this rare chromosomal 20 long arm interstitial deletion, containing GNAS l

[Family genetic analysis of paternal Dystrophin gene mutations in a case of female Duchenne muscular dystrophy].

A pedigree genetic analysis of a female Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) inherited from paternal chimerism was conducted to explore the genetic diagnosis strategy. No large deletions/duplications was found in the DMD gene of the proband. Next-generation sequencing (NGS) results showed that the proband had a heterozygous mutation in the DMD gene c.4707C>A (p.C1569X). This locus has not been reported in the literature and is considered as a pathogenic mutation. Sanger sequencing revealed that the father of the proband carried the same mutation, and the mosaic ratio was about 17.7%. The specific

A systematic review of human paternal oxytocin: Insights into the methodology and what we know so far.

With the consolidation of fathers' engagement in caregiving, understanding the neuroendocrine and hormonal mechanisms underlying fatherhood becomes a relevant topic. Oxytocin (OT) has been linked with maternal bonding and caregiving, but less is known about the role of OT in human fatherhood and paternal caregiving. A systematic review of methods and findings of previous OT research in human fathers was carried. The literature search on PubMed and Scopus yielded 133 records. Twenty-four studies were included and analyzed. Significant variability emerged in OT methodology, including laboratory

Paternal Exposure to Immunosuppressive and/or Biologic Agents and Birth Outcomes in Patients With Immune-Mediated Inflammatory Diseases.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study to inform the safety of exposure to immunosuppressive and/or biologic agents around conception in expectant fathers with immune-mediated inflammatory diseases (IMIDs) on birth outcomes. METHODS: Using a deidentified administrative claims database (OptumLabs Data Warehouse), we identified 7453 expectant fathers with IMIDs (inflammatory bowel diseases, rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis/psoriatic arthritis, and ankylosing spondylitis) linked to newborns with periconception medication exposure between 38 and 60 weeks before the newborn bi

Paternal weight of ducks may have an influence on offspring' small intestinal function and cecal microorganisms.

BACKGROUND: In animals, many factors affect the small intestinal function and cecal microorganisms, including body weight and genetic background. However, whether paternal weight impacts the small intestinal function and cecal microorganisms remains unknown to date. The current study used Nonghua sheldrake to estimate the effect of paternal weight on the intestine of the offspring by evaluating differences in small intestinal morphology, digestive enzyme activity, and cecal microorganisms between the offspring of male parents with high body weight (group H) and that of male parents with low bo

Screening for Early Signs of Paternal Perinatal Affective Disorder in Expectant Fathers: A Cluster Analysis Approach.

Previous studies documented gender-related differences in the expression of Perinatal Affective Disorders. However, little attention has been paid to screening the male population during the perinatal period. This study was based on three aims: (1) to investigate the mental health of expectant fathers based on their levels of depression, anxiety, addiction, anger attacks/hostility, and somatization, identifying psychological profiles; (2) to analyze the association between these profiles and the individual variable of perceived stress; (3) and to examine the association between these profiles

Paternal Folate Status and Sperm Quality, Pregnancy Outcomes, and Epigenetics: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

SCOPE: The effectiveness of maternal folate in reducing the risk of congenital malformations during pregnancy is well established. However, the role of the paternal folate status is scarcely investigated. The aim of this study is to investigate the evidence of associations between the paternal folate status and sperm quality, sperm epigenome, and pregnancy outcomes. METHODS AND RESULTS: Databases are searched up to December 2017 resulting in 3682 articles, of which 23 are retrieved for full-text assessment. Four out of thirteen human and two out of four animal studies show positive associatio

Advanced paternal age is associated with an increased risk of spontaneous miscarriage: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Although spontaneous miscarriage is the most common complication of human pregnancy, potential contributing factors are not fully understood. Advanced maternal age has long been recognised as a major risk factor for miscarriage, being strongly related with fetal chromosomal abnormalities. The relation between paternal age and the risk of miscarriage is less evident, yet it is biologically plausible that an increasing number of genetic and epigenetic sperm abnormalities in older males may contribute to miscarriage. Previous meta-analyses showed associations between advanced paternal

Paternal Contributions to Offspring Health: Role of Sperm Small RNAs in Intergenerational Transmission of Epigenetic Information.

The most fundamental process for the perpetuation of a species is the transfer of information from parent to offspring. Although genomic DNA contributes to the majority of the inheritance, it is now clear that epigenetic information -information beyond the underlying DNA sequence - is also passed on to future generations. However, the mechanism and extent of such inheritance are not well-understood. Here, I review some of the concepts, evidence, and mechanisms of intergenerational epigenetic inheritance via sperm small RNAs. Recent studies provide evidence that mature sperm are highly abundant

Case-control study of paternal occupational exposures and childhood lymphoma in Great Britain, 1962-2010.

BACKGROUND: This nationwide study investigates associations between paternal occupational exposure and childhood lymphoma. METHODS: The UK National Registry of Childhood Tumours provided cases of childhood lymphoma born and diagnosed in Great Britain 1962-2010. Control births, unaffected by childhood cancer, were matched on sex, birth period and birth registration sub-district. Fathers' occupations were assigned to one or more of 33 exposure groups and also coded for occupational social class. RESULTS: We analysed 5033 childhood lymphoma cases and 4990 controls. Total lymphoma and the subgro

Preconceptional paternal antiepileptic drugs use and risk of congenital anomalies in offspring: a nationwide cohort study.

Recent studies have shown that certain pharmacological agents used by fathers before conception may increase the risk of adverse neonatal outcomes in offspring. However, little is known about the effect of paternal use of antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) on congenital anomalies in children. Based on Danish national registers, we conducted a cohort study of 733, 282 singletons born from 1997 to 2008, with follow-up throughout 2013. The children whose fathers used AEDs during the 3 months before conception were categorized as the exposed. Logistic regression model was used to examine association betwe

Paternal impacts on development: identification of genomic regions vulnerable to oxidative DNA damage in human spermatozoa.

STUDY QUESTION: Do all regions of the paternal genome within the gamete display equivalent vulnerability to oxidative DNA damage? SUMMARY ANSWER: Oxidative DNA damage is not randomly distributed in mature human spermatozoa but is instead targeted, with particular chromosomes being especially vulnerable to oxidative stress. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: Oxidative DNA damage is frequently encountered in the spermatozoa of male infertility patients. Such lesions can influence the incidence of de novo mutations in children, yet it remains to be established whether all regions of the sperm genome displa

The interplay of socio-economic status represented by paternal educational level, white matter structure and reading.

A child's school achievement is influenced by environmental factors. The environmental factors, when represented by socio-economic status (SES) of the family, have been demonstrated to be related to the reading skills of a child. The neural correlates of the relation between SES and reading have been less thoroughly investigated. The present study expands current research by exploring the relation between SES, quantified by paternal educational level, reading of the offspring and the structure of white matter pathways in the left hemisphere as derived from DTI-based tractography analyses. Paternal age and the risk of low birth weight and preterm delivery: a Finnish register-based study.

BACKGROUND: Based on existing studies, there is no conclusive evidence as to whether and why paternal age matters for birth outcomes. METHODS: We used Finnish population registers on 106 652 children born 1987-2000. We first document the unadjusted association between paternal age and the risk of low birth weight (LBW; <2500 g) and preterm birth (<37 weeks' gestation). Second, we investigate whether the unadjusted association is attenuated on adjustment for child's, maternal and parental socioeconomic characteristics. Third, by adopting a within-family design which involves comparing children
