On-demand amorphous calcium phosphate-mediated regeneration of dentin and enamel using ion-regulated hydroxypropyl methylcellulose and carboxymethyl chitosan hydrogels.

This study presents an innovative heteropolysaccharide hydrogel system engineered through the synergistic combination of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose‑calcium (HPMC-Ca) and carboxymethyl chitosan-phosphate (CMCS-P). This dual-network hydrogel uniquely leverages the complementary physicochemical properties of both polysaccharides to achieve simultaneous biomimetic mineralization of enamel and dentin-addressing a long-standing challenge in restorative dentistry. The hydrophobic domains of HPMC-Ca facilitate sustained calcium ion release, establishing a stable mineralization reservoir, while CMCS

Development of photodynamic therapy in treating oral diseases.

The morbidity of oral disorders, including gingivitis, caries, endodontic-periodontal diseases, and oral cancer, is relatively high globally. Pathogenic cells are the root cause of many oral disorders, and oral therapies depend on eradicating them. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) has been established as a potential and non-invasive local adjuvant treatment for oral disorders. PDT consists of three essential components: photosensitizer (PS), a light source with a certain wavelength, and oxygen dissolved in the cells. These three components can interact to cause damage to proteins, lipids, nucleic ac

Comparison of Antibacterial Activity of Various Additives to Glass Ionomer Restoration: An In Vitro Study.

INTRODUCTION: Glass-ionomer (GIC) cement was introduced in 1972 as a "new filling material of dentistry". It is bioactive and plays an important role in caries prevention due to its ability to release fluoride into the oral environment and remineralization of dental hard tissues. However, its properties such as moisture sensitivity, wear resistance, and bond strength are not sufficient to inflict the antimicrobial environment. This in vitro study aimed to evaluate the antibacterial property of four different GIC cements against S. mutans and L. acidophilus. METHODOLOGY: This study was conduct

Emerging factors affecting peri-implant bone metabolism.

Implant dentistry has evolved to the point that standard implant osseointegration is predictable. This is attributed in part to the advancements in material sciences that have led toward improvements in implant surface technology and characteristics. Nonetheless, there remain several cases where implant therapy fails (specifically at early time points), most commonly attributed to factors affecting bone metabolism. Among these patients, smokers are known to have impaired bone metabolism and thus be subject to higher risks of early implant failure and/or late complications related to the stabil

Bisphosphonates in dentistry: Historical perspectives, adverse effects, and novel applications.

Studies of the potential role of bisphosphonates in dentistry date back to physical chemical research in the 1960s, and the genesis of the discovery of bisphosphonate pharmacology in part can be linked to some of this work. Since that time, parallel research on the effects of bisphosphonates on bone metabolism continued, while efforts in the dental field included studies of bisphosphonate effects on dental calculus, caries, and alveolar bone loss. While some utility of this drug class in the dental field was identified, leading to their experimental use in various dentrifice formulations and i

Tooth resorption in cats: pathophysiology and treatment options.

PRACTICAL RELEVANCE: Tooth resorption is common in the domestic cat and the incidence has been reported to increase with increasing age. Cats with clinically missing teeth have also been found to be more likely to have tooth resorption. All types of teeth in the feline dentition may be affected, but lesions seem to be more common in certain teeth. CLINICAL CHALLENGES: Tooth resorption can be difficult to detect, with cats often masking signs of oral discomfort or pain. Routine radiography is required for timely diagnosis, as clinical (visual and tactile) methods only detect late-stage lesions

Bioregulatory periodontal medicine: could the molecular networks, inflammation and system biology modify the auto-regulatory capacity of the patients?

BACKGROUND: The traditional healthcare model, focused on symptom management, has shown limitations in addressing chronic diseases. In response, Bioregulatory Systems Medicine (BrSM) has emerged, an approach that promotes the body's self-regulation through multi-component drug and phytotherapeutic treatments. Its potential application in dentistry, particularly in periodontitis, has spurred the study of various natural molecules with the potential to prevent or reduce bone resorption. This qualitative systematic review analyzes the available evidence from animal and human models in the field of
