Method for identifying calcified plaque in contrast enhanced computed tomography.

Arteriosclerosis is the cause of many life threatening diseases which combine to cause many deaths and high health care costs. The thickness of the aortic wall and the volume of calcified plaque are both used to diagnose arteriosclerosis. Both "symptoms" can be assessed using computed tomography; however wall thickness measurements are typically made on contrast enhanced scans while plaque measurements are usually gathered from un-enhanced scans. A technique is described below that would allow for both diagnostic procedures to be performed using only one type of scan. The proposed technique is

CT reconstruction with thick slices not only underestimates lymph node size but also reduces data reproducibility in colorectal cancer.

BACKGROUND: Reliable size measurement of lymph node (LN) metastases is important for the evaluation of cancer treatment. However, image analyses without proper settings may result in inappropriate diagnoses and staging. PURPOSE: To investigate whether reconstruction slice thickness in computed tomography (CT) affects measurements of LN size and reproducibility. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We analyzed 48 patients with histological diagnoses of sigmoid colon and rectal cancer who underwent contrast-enhanced CT colonography as part of a surgical treatment preparation. A board-certified radiologist se

Effect of tumor volume on the enhancement pattern of parathyroid adenoma on parathyroid four-dimensional CT.

INTRODUCTION: The purpose of this study is to assess the effect of tumor volume on the enhancement pattern of parathyroid adenoma (PTA) on four-dimensional computed tomography (4D-CT). METHODS: We analyzed the enhancement patterns of PTA on four-phase 4D-CT in 44 patients. Dependency of the changes of Hounsfield unit values (ΔHU) on the tumor volumes and clinical characteristics was evaluated using linear regression analyses. In addition, an unpaired t test was used to compare ΔHU of PTAs between PTA volume ≥1 cm(3) and <1 cm(3), thyroid gland, and lymph node. RESULTS: PTA volume based on CT

Diverticular disease severity score based on CT colonography.

OBJECTIVE: We propose a diverticular disease severity score (DDSS) based on CT colonography (CTC) findings. METHODS: Seventy-nine patients (62 ± 14.5 years) underwent CTC after recovering from an episode of acute diverticulitis. Two independent readers classified each case using a four-point scale (DDSS), based on maximum sigmoid colon wall thickness (MSCWT) and minimum lumen diameter at CTC: 1 = MSCWT <3 mm, lumen diameter ≥15 mm; 2 = MSCWT 3-8 mm, lumen diameter ≥5 mm; 3 = MSCWT ≥8 mm, lumen diameter ≥5 mm; 4 = MSCWT ≥8 mm, lumen diameter <5 mm. Intra- and interobserver reproducibility was

Automated texture-based quantification of centrilobular nodularity and centrilobular emphysema in chest CT images.

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: Characterization of smoking-related lung disease typically consists of visual assessment of chest computed tomographic (CT) images for the presence and extent of emphysema and centrilobular nodularity (CN). Quantitative analysis of emphysema and CN may improve the accuracy, reproducibility, and efficiency of chest CT scoring. The purpose of this study was to develop a fully automated texture-based system for the detection and quantification of centrilobular emphysema (CLE) and CN in chest CT images. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A novel approach was used to prepare regions

Automated 2-D cephalometric analysis of X-ray by image registration approach based on least square approximator.

This paper presents a new approach to cephalometric x-ray landmark localization. This approach is based on extracting features from face profile of the lateral skull x-ray. The extracted side profile is then segmented based on knowledge of known local facial structures. Once the face profile is properly segmented, nine perceptually significant landmarks (fiducial points) on the face are registered based on a local maximum curvature computation. These fiducial points are used for point-by-point correspondence to find the transformation coefficients of the control points between two images of a

A point-wise quantification of asymmetry using deformation fields: application to the study of the Crouzon mouse model.

This paper introduces a novel approach to quantify asymmetry in each point of a surface. The measure is based on analysing displacement vectors resulting from nonrigid image registration. A symmetric atlas, generated from control subjects is registered to a given subject image. A comparison of the resulting displacement vectors on the left and right side of the symmetry plane, gives a point-wise measure of asymmetry. The asymmetry measure was applied to the study of Crouzon syndrome using Micro CT scans of genetically modified mice. Crouzon syndrome is characterised by the premature fusion of

Improved unsupervised 3D lung lesion detection and localization by fusing global and local features: Validation in 3D low-dose computed tomography.

Unsupervised anomaly detection (UAD) is crucial in low-dose computed tomography (LDCT). Recent AI technologies, leveraging global features, have enabled effective UAD with minimal training data of normal patients. However, this approach, devoid of utilizing local features, exhibits vulnerability in detecting deep lesions within the lungs. In other words, while the conventional use of global features can achieve high specificity, it often comes with limited sensitivity. Developing a UAD AI model with high sensitivity is essential to prevent false negatives, especially in screening patients with

Three-dimensional numerical schemes for the segmentation of the psoas muscle in X-ray computed tomography images.

The analysis of the psoas muscle in morphological and functional imaging has proved to be an accurate approach to assess sarcopenia, i.e. a systemic loss of skeletal muscle mass and function that may be correlated to multifactorial etiological aspects. The inclusion of sarcopenia assessment into a radiological workflow would need the implementation of computational pipelines for image processing that guarantee segmentation reliability and a significant degree of automation. The present study utilizes three-dimensional numerical schemes for psoas segmentation in low-dose X-ray computed tomograp

A clinically applicable AI system for diagnosis of congenital heart diseases based on computed tomography images.

Congenital heart disease (CHD) is the most common type of birth defect. Without timely detection and treatment, approximately one-third of children with CHD would die in the infant period. However, due to the complicated heart structures, early diagnosis of CHD and its types is quite challenging, even for experienced radiologists. Here, we present an artificial intelligence (AI) system that achieves a comparable performance of human experts in the critical task of classifying 17 categories of CHD types. We collected the first-large CT dataset from three different CT machines, including more th

Three-dimensional volumetric analysis of ghost cell odontogenic carcinoma using 3-D reconstruction software: a case report.

OBJECTIVE: Ghost cell odontogenic carcinoma is a very rare malignant neoplasm. Tumor volume may be a more precise alternative for determining size, which is usually measured by maximum linear dimension. The purpose of this case report is to highlight the importance of obtaining 3-dimensional (3-D) images of the tumor for volumetric analysis to improve the chances of surgical success. This report presents a case of ghost cell odontogenic carcinoma infiltrating the maxillary sinus through the palate. The lesion was surgically treated and subsequently selected for volumetric reconstruction and an

A novel approach for the automated segmentation and volume quantification of cardiac fats on computed tomography.

The deposits of fat on the surroundings of the heart are correlated to several health risk factors such as atherosclerosis, carotid stiffness, coronary artery calcification, atrial fibrillation and many others. These deposits vary unrelated to obesity, which reinforces its direct segmentation for further quantification. However, manual segmentation of these fats has not been widely deployed in clinical practice due to the required human workload and consequential high cost of physicians and technicians. In this work, we propose a unified method for an autonomous segmentation and quantification

Extralobar pulmonary sequestration in a 55-year-old man.

Pulmonary sequestration is a rare congenital lung malformation that more commonly occurs in the left lung, mainly near the lower mediastinum. It is rarely observed in patients with extralobar sequestration in adulthood. We report the case of a 55-year-old man with recurrent fever and cough lasting for about 1 month, who was admitted to our hospital. His past history was unremarkable. The final diagnosis of extralobar sequestration was dependent on three-dimensional computed tomography angiography (3D CTA), which showed an abnormal blood supply vessel to the consolidation from the aortic arch.

MDCT and 3D imaging in transient enteroenteric intussusception: clinical observations and review of the literature.

OBJECTIVE: This article will review the current role of MDCT and 3D imaging in the diagnosis and management of adults with enteroenteric intussusception. CONCLUSION: Because of significant advancements in CT along with its increasing use, detection of enteroenteric intussusceptions by CT has increased. These findings are sometimes in asymptomatic patients, often transient, and without an identifiable lead point. This has complicated the management of adult patients with intussusception because not every patient with intussusception may need surgery.

Acute aortic syndromes: new insights from electrocardiographically gated computed tomography.

The development of retrospective electrocardiographic (ECG)-gating has proved to be a diagnostic and therapeutic boon for computed tomography (CT) imaging of patients with acute thoracic aortic diseases, such as aortic dissection/intramural hematoma (AD/IMH), penetrating atherosclerotic ulcer (APU), and ruptured/leaking aneurysm. The notorious pulsation motion artifacts in the ascending aorta confounding regular CT scanning can be eliminated, and involvement of the sinuses of Valsalva, the valve cusps, the aortic annulus, and the coronary arteries in aortic dissection can be clearly depicted o
