We studied 23 clinical and environmental strains of Sporothrix schenckii sensu lato collected from 1984 to 2017 in Argentina. The molecular identification (partial sequencing of a fragment of the calmodulin gene) of the strains was performed. We have determined the serum levels of heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) in 56 patients with systemic-onset juvenile idiopathic arthritis (s-JIA) and compared these with serum HO-1 levels in healthy controls and patients with other pediatric rheumatic diseases. The Streptococcus pneumoniae cell-wall components peptidoglycan and lipoteichoic acid activate Toll-like receptor 2 (TLR2), which transduces an inflammatory response. After exposure to penicillin, type 2 S. pneumoniae strain D39, but not the isogenic autolysin-deficient mutant AL2, induced significantly enhanced interleukin-8 promoter activity in TLR2-transfected HeLa cells. Lag-phase D39 exhibited enhanced TLR2 activation after exposure to penicillin at levels below the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC); in contrast, early log-phase S. pneumoniae were most active when exposed to the MIC.

Early and late phase II studies of S-1 were conducted for the treatment of metastatic pancreatic cancer. In both trials, S-1 was administered at a dose of 80 mg/m2/day. To clarify cytokines involved in the development of systemic juvenile idiopathic arthritis (s-JIA) associated macrophage activation syndrome (MAS) and to identify the serum biomarkers for the diagnosis of s-JIA associated MAS, we employed an antibody array that simultaneously detects 174 cytokines.
