Cardiovascular manifestations of iatrogenic hyperthyroidism in two dogs.

Two dogs were diagnosed with iatrogenic thyrotoxicosis (1 definitive, 1 presumptive). Both showed physical examination findings of agitation, tachypnea, and tachycardia. Sinus tachycardia with supraventricular ectopy was diagnosed in one case, and syncope and atrial flutter was present in the other. Both dogs had concurrent cardiac disease that might have contributed to the severity of their clinical signs. Excessive thyroid hormone supplementation in humans causes supraventricular arrhythmias including sinus tachycardia, supraventricular tachycardia, atrial fibrillation, and atrial flutter. C

Hepatic vein stenosis (Budd-Chiari syndrome) as a cause of ascites in a cat.

A 10-year-old cat presented with a history of unexplained ascites. Ultrasound and angiography identified an isolated stenosis of the middle hepatic vein resulting in Budd-Chiari Syndrome. Balloon dilation of the stenosis was attempted but the patient expired. Necropsy revealed a discrete membranous stenosis at the junction of the caudal vena cava and the middle hepatic vein. The literature was reviewed to assess clinical and diagnostic findings, as well as therapeutic options in humans with hepatic vein stenosis.

Successful closure of left-to-right patent ductus arteriosus in three dogs with concurrent pulmonary hypertension.

Closure of reversed patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) is generally accepted to be contraindicated due to case based evidence of worsened outcomes, but little is known about closure of left-to-right PDA with concurrent pulmonary hypertension (PH). This report describes three dogs presenting with varying severity of PH and clinical signs, all with documented left-to-right PDA. The PDA was closed in each case; either by surgical ligation or transarterial device occlusion, and follow up was available for a minimum of 8 months. Every case had a successful outcome with improvement or resolution of PH a

Comparison of auscultatory and echocardiographic findings in healthy adult cats.

OBJECTIVES: This pilot study was performed to investigate murmur prevalence and to explore the association between auscultatory and echocardiographic findings in apparently healthy cats in order to design a larger study. ANIMALS, MATERIALS AND METHODS: Adult cats in 4 rehoming centres were screened by auscultation and echocardiography (echo) over 2 periods of 2 weeks each. In the first period, echo was attempted only in cats with murmurs. In the second period, all cats underwent auscultation by 2 observers and echo. LVH was defined in 5 ways: maximal diastolic left ventricular (LV) wall thick

External splinting for treatment of pectus excavatum in a dog with right ventricular outflow obstruction.

Right ventricular outflow tract obstruction was diagnosed by Doppler echocardiography in a young dog with a cardiac murmur, severe dyspnea, and a prominent sternal depression. Thoracic radiography confirmed a diagnosis of pectus excavatum involving the caudal third of the sternum. The right ventricular outflow obstruction was attributed to cardiac compression from the dorsally deviated sternum. External surgical splinting of the sternabrae, demonstrated by video in this report, was used to treat the pectus excavatum. Radiographic and Doppler echocardiographic examination 3 weeks and 4 months p

Acquired atrial septal defects secondary to rupture of the atrial septum in dogs with degenerative mitral valve disease.

Acquired atrial septal defects (ASDs) secondary to atrial septal rupture are uncommon in dogs with degenerative mitral valve disease. Echocardiographic diagnosis of these defects has not previously been described. The echocardiographic features in two cases identified antemortem are presented in this report. ASDs can be difficult to identify on two-dimensional echocardiogram when relatively small in size and may be underreported. Acquired ASDs may alter the physiology, treatment plan and prognostic implications for the dogs in which they occur and their presence should be considered in all cas

Utility of plasma N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) to distinguish between congestive heart failure and non-cardiac causes of acute dyspnea in cats.

BACKGROUND: Circulating plasma N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) concentration facilitates emergency diagnosis of congestive heart failure (CHF) in people. Its utility to discriminate between dyspneic cats with CHF vs. primary respiratory disease requires further assessment. Our objectives were to determine if NT-proBNP (1) differentiates dyspneic cats with CHF vs. primary respiratory disease; (2) increases with renal insufficiency; (3) correlates with left atrial dimension, radiographic cardiomegaly, and estimated left ventricular filling pressure (E/E(a)). METHODS: NT-pro

Arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy associated with severe left ventricular involvement in a cat.

An 8-year-old, 4 kg, intact female, domestic shorthaired cat was referred for tachypnea and pleural effusion. A 24-h Holter recording showed numerous polymorphic ventricular premature complexes with left and right bundle branch block morphology. Echocardiographic examination revealed right atrial and ventricular dilation. The right ventricular free wall was thin and aneurysmal. The cat died 10 days after initiation of antiarrhythmic therapy. Gross and histopathological findings were consistent with arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy (ARVC) associated with severe left ventricular i

Investigation into the use of plasma NT-proBNP concentration to screen for feline hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the utility of feline NT-proBNP plasma concentration [NT-proBNP] as a screening tool for cats with subclinical hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM). ANIMALS, MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty adult Maine Coon or Maine Coon crossbred cats from the feline HCM research colony at the University of California, Davis were studied. All cats had previously been genotyped as heterozygous or negative for the A31P myosin binding protein C (MYBPC) mutation. Echocardiograms were performed to assess the severity of HCM in each cat. Blood samples were collected for evaluation of [NT-proBNP].

Ante-mortem diagnosis of persistent truncus arteriosus in an 8-year-old asymptomatic dog.

Persistent truncus arteriosus (PTA) was diagnosed in an 8-year-old neutered male Poodle referred for echocardiographic examination prior to anesthesia for surgical correction of bilateral cataract. A single large artery limited by a bicuspid valve and overriding both ventricles was observed with 2 distinct pulmonary arteries arising from the common arterial trunk. A large size interventricular septal defect was associated with a low velocity bidirectional shunt. The lesion was identified as a Type 3 PTA according to Collett and Edwards' classification. Although no clinical signs were reported,

Endovascular retrieval of embolized jugular catheter fragments in three dogs using a nitinol gooseneck snare.

Two dogs were referred to the Kansas State University Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital for pulmonary arterial embolization and one to Washington State University Veterinary Teaching Hospital for right heart embolization of jugular catheter fragments. Endovascular retrieval of foreign bodies was accomplished under general anesthesia in all three cases. Although the incidence of, and complications associated with catheter embolization in dogs are unknown, it appears that they can be safely and easily retrieved with a nitinol gooseneck snare.

Cranial vena caval syndrome secondary to transvenous pacemaker implantation in two dogs.

Superior vena caval syndrome is a rare, but reported complication of transvenous pacemaker implantation in humans. This syndrome can occur secondary to fibrotic and/or thrombotic obstruction of venous blood flow into the right atrium. The therapeutic approach depends on the suspicion of the presence of an active thrombus and may include antithrombotics, angioplasty and/or surgical venoplasty. We describe two dogs that developed severe pleural effusion secondary to stricture formation in the cranial vena cava 4 years after dual chamber transvenous pacemaker implantation. The stenosis was most l

Percutaneous occlusion of a muscular ventricular septal defect with an Amplatzer muscular VSD occluder.

Ventricular septal defects are a relatively common congenital cardiac disease that, when severe, can be associated with substantial morbidity and mortality. Several minimally invasive methods of repair have been described in the human literature. This report describes the first case of percutaneous closure of a naturally occurring muscular septal defect using an Amplatzer occluder in a dog affected by concurrent pulmonic stenosis. Based on this experience catheter-based occlusion of muscular ventricular septal defects is a feasible option in dogs. Further studies are necessary to identify the

Gerbode type defect and third degree atrioventricular block in association with bacterial endocarditis in a dog.

Gerbode type defects are rare left ventricular outflow tract-right atrial communications in people that may be congenital or acquired; they have been reported only once previously in dogs. Acquired forms in humans have been reported secondary to bacterial endocarditis, trauma, and valve replacement surgery, among other causes. We report a case of left ventricular outflow tract to right atrium and right ventricle communications (Gerbode type defect) in association with aortic and tricuspid valve bacterial endocarditis in a geriatric dog. The dog also developed third degree atrioventricular bloc

Listeria associated mural and valvular endocarditis in an alpaca.

An alpaca presented for emergency evaluation of respiratory distress. Physical examination revealed weakness, pyrexia, and a grade V/VI left apical holosystolic murmur. Initial thoracic examination and radiographs were consistent with left sided congestive heart failure. Blood cultures, echocardiographic evaluation, and necropsy findings established a diagnosis of bacterial endocarditis associated with a Listeria monocytogenes infection. Left ventricular endocarditis is uncommon in ruminants, and to the authors' knowledge there are no other reports of L. monocytogenes being the causative agent
