Treatment of denture-related stomatitis improves endothelial function assessed by flow-mediated vascular dilation.

INTRODUCTION: The presence of oral inflammation has recently been linked with the pathogenesis of cardiovascular diseases. While numerous studies have described links between periodontitis and endothelial dysfunction, little is known about the influence of denture-related stomatitis (DRS) on cardiovascular risk. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine whether the treatment of DRS can lead to improvement of the clinical measures of vascular dysfunction. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The DRS patients were treated with a local oral antifungal agent for 3 weeks. Blood pressure, flow-mediated di…

Tonsillar microbiota in children with PFAPA (periodic fever, aphthous stomatitis, pharyngitis, and adenitis) syndrome.

Periodic fever, aphthous stomatitis, pharyngitis, and adenitis (PFAPA) is a childhood febrile syndrome of unknown origin that is often cured with tonsillectomy. We aimed to compare the bacterial microbiota of the tonsils removed from PFAPA patients with those of controls. We used next-generation sequencing technology to investigate the bacterial microbiota of the tonsils of 30 PFAPA patients and 24 controls. We found significant differences in the presence and relative abundance of many bacteria between PFAPA cases and controls. For example, cyanobacteria, potential producers of microcystins a…

Putative domain-domain interactions in the vesicular stomatitis virus L polymerase protein appendage region.

UNLABELLED: The multidomain polymerase protein (L) of nonsegmented negative-strand (NNS) RNA viruses catalyzes transcription and replication of the virus genome. The N-terminal half of the protein forms a ring-like polymerase structure, while the C-terminal half encoding viral mRNA transcript modifications consists of a flexible appendage with three distinct globular domains. To gain insight into putative transient interactions between L domains during viral RNA synthesis, we exchanged each of the four distinct regions encompassing the appendage region of vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV) India…

Agonistic anti-CD40 enhances the CD8+ T cell response during vesicular stomatitis virus infection.

Intracellular pathogens are capable of inducing vigorous CD8+ T cell responses. However, we do not entirely understand the factors driving the generation of large pools of highly protective memory CD8+ T cells. Here, we studied the generation of endogenous ovalbumin-specific memory CD8+ T cells following infection with recombinant vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV) and Listeria monocytogenes (LM). VSV infection resulted in the generation of a large ovalbumin-specific memory CD8+ T cell population, which provided minimal protective immunity that waned with time. In contrast, the CD8+ T cell popul…

Allergic contact stomatitis caused by a titanium nitride-coated implant abutment: a clinical report.

A patient developed contact mucositis after being treated with a titanium nitride implant abutment. Patch testing disclosed a positive reaction to titanium nitride. After removal of the titanium nitride-coated abutment and placement of an uncoated abutment, all signs and symptoms disappeared. This clinical report suggests that titanium nitride-coated abutments may be a potential allergen in some patients.

Chronic ulcerative stomatitis: diagnostic and management challenges--four new cases and review of literature.

Chronic ulcerative stomatitis (CUS) is a recently described mucocutaneous disease characterized by involvement of mucosal surfaces and skin. The disease usually presents in the form of painful oral ulcers and has been seen predominantly among older women. Clinically, CUS patients may exhibit erosive or ulcerative lesions of oral mucosa resembling erosive lichen planus and/or other vesiculobullous lesions. Routine histology may exhibit features of lichenoid mucositis and is often nondiagnostic. Direct immunofluorescence studies of mucosal or skin biopsies usually reveal a unique pattern of IgG …

Dermatitis, glossitis, stomatitis, cheilitis, anemia and weight loss: a classic presentation of pancreatic glucagonoma.

Glucagonomas are rare tumors. They are predominantly located in the body or tail of the pancreas and display a constellation of signs and symptoms referred to as glucagonoma syndrome. The term necrolytic migratory erythema is used to characterize the distinctive rash associated with this syndrome. This report describes a classic presentation consisting of dermatitis, glossitis, stomatitis, angular cheilitis, anemia, and weight loss that was associated with the finding of a pancreatic mass and a markedly elevated plasma glucagon level. After pancreatic resection, the patient had complete resolu…

Prophylactic action of allopurinol against chemotherapy-induced stomatitis--inhibition of superoxide dismutase and proteases.

The activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and several proteases were measured in kidney of mice treated with allopurinol in order to elucidate the mechanism of prophylactic action of allopurinol against chemotherapy-induced stomatitis. The following results were obtained. Following 3 day administration of allopurinol 20 mg/day per os (Group C), the concentrations of allopurinol and oxipurinol in the renal tissue were 203.9 +/- 52.1 and 1141.7 +/- 194.8 micrograms/g, respectively. The SOD activity was significantly lower in Group C than in the untreated control group (p < 0.01). The enzyme a…

The vesicular stomatitis virus matrix protein promotes FACT subunit depletion to suppress the FEAR pathway.

We recently identified the FACT-ETS-1 Antiviral Response (FEAR) pathway as an interferon-independent innate immune response that restricts D … was unclear if RNA viruses interact with this pathway. Here, we show that the RNA virus, vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV; Rhabdoviridae), is also restricted by the FEAR pathway but has evolved a distinct mechanism to block this antiviral response. Through in vitro assays and cell culture studies, we demonstrate that the VSV encoded matrix (M) protein direct …

Optogenetic and temperature-dependent modulation of vesicular stomatitis virus polymerase activity by an intramolecular dimerizer.

Optogenetic dimerization modules are widely used to regulate protein function, yet their behaviour within folded enzymes remains incompletely understood. Here, we engineered vesicular stomatitis virus by inserting an intramolecularly tethered light-inducible dimerizer into the viral RNA-dependent RNA polymerase [large (L) protein], enabling assessment of its effects on early viral transcription and viral replication. Blue light illumination enhanced viral replication, but reduced temperature produced a similar increase in viral replication even in the absence of light. In addition, a thermally…

A systematic review and meta-analysis of single-application topical doxycycline for recurrent aphthous stomatitis.

Recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS), an oral mucosal pathosis, can interfere with patients' quality of life, mainly due to its recurrent nature. The etiology of RAS remains unclear and its management is challenging. This systematic review and meta-analysis were performed to assess the efficacy of a single topical application of doxycycline to treat RAS. Online search of the Scopus, Medline (via PubMed), Embase and Google Scholar databases was performed from May to September 2025. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) were selected, eligible studies were conducted for healthy patients with the pr…

Antifungal Effects of Pterostilbene on Candida albicans, Candida dubliniensis, and Microcosm Biofilms of Denture Stomatitis.

Natural compound-based strategies have gained attention as alternatives to conventional antifungal therapies, particularly in the management of Candida infections affecting the oral cavity, such as denture stomatitis. Our aim was to investigate the antifungal activity of the polyphenol pterostilbene (PTE) on clinical Candida isolates and microcosm biofilms from denture stomatitis, as well as to evaluate its toxicity and therapeutic efficacy in Galleria mellonella. PTE exhibited fungicidal effects against Candida albicans and Candida dubliniensis at 32 µg/mL. Time-kill assays demonstrated compl…

A replicating recombinant vesicular stomatitis virus model for dairy cattle H5N1 influenza virus glycoprotein evolution.

UNLABELLED: A panzootic of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1 viruses from clade 2.3.4.4b has triggered a multistate outbreak in US dairy cattle and an unknown number of human infections. HPAI viruses are handled in specialized biocontainment facilities. Ethical considerations limit certain evolution experiments aimed at assessing viral resistance to potential therapeutics. We have developed a replicating recombinant vesicular stomatitis virus (rVSV) where we replaced its glycoprotein with the hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA) genes of a 2.3.4.4b H5N1 virus (rVSV-H5N1dc2024)…

Apremilast for refractory major recurrent aphthous stomatitis involving the posterior pharyngeal wall: a case report.

This case report describes a 37-year-old woman with refractory major recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) who presented with a persistent 10-month posterior pharyngeal ulcer that was unresponsive to conventional treatments. Laboratory tests revealed elevated IL-6 and C-reactive protein. After excluding other related diseases, treatment with apremilast led to complete ulcer healing within 3 months, with normalization of IL-6 and no new ulcers during 8 months of follow-up. This case suggests the potential therapeutic benefits of apremilast in severe pharyngeal RAS refractory to conventional thera…

HLA-B51 Positivity Correlates With Symptom Completeness From Recurrent Aphthous Stomatitis to Complete Behçet's Disease.

HLA-B51 is well-established as a genetic risk factor for the development of Behçet's disease (BD), and its association with certain clinical manifestations has been documented. However, there is a lack of comprehensive research examining its role in the overall symptom completeness and full clinical expression of the disease. We performed a retrospective review of medical records from 1203 patients treated at a tertiary hospital between June 2012 and June 2017. Data regarding HLA-B51 status and clinical conditions were extracted, and patients were classified according to the "Revised Japanese
