The distribution of medically significant ticks in Vietnam requires ongoing monitoring. This study presents data on tick distribution and molecular screening for Borrelia spp. and Coxiella burnetii DNA. Ticks were collected from domestic animals and vegetation in four provinces over the period of 2024-2025. Species identification was performed based on morphology and confirmed by sequencing mitochondrial COI and 16S rRNA genes. A total of 2347 ticks were collected, representing eight species from the genera Haemaphysalis, Rhipicephalus, and Amblyomma. The study provides new distribution record

Tick-borne diseases (TBDs), particularly Japanese spotted fever, are an increasing public health concern in Japan. Data on pathogens carried by ticks removed directly from patients and their associated clinical outcomes remain limited. This prospective study investigated pathogen carriage in patient-derived ticks and evaluated the clinical risk of TBDs. Between April and October 2025, ticks were collected from patients presenting with tick bites at two medical institutions in Western Japan. Ticks were morphologically identified and spotted fever group rickettsiae (SFGR) was detected by nested

Bartonella species are vector-borne pathogens that infect a wide range of hosts, including humans. Although several Bartonella species have been identified in rodents and arthropods in Korea, information on Bartonella detection in ticks removed from human patients remains limited. This study investigated the presence of Bartonella species DNA in human-biting ticks collected in Korea and screened for other tick-associated bacteria, including Coxiella endosymbiont. From January to December 2018, 35 ticks were removed from 29 tick-bitten patients in Jeollanam-do and Gwangju, Korea. Ticks were ide

The Heartland virus (HRTV) is a tick-borne human pathogenic phlebovirus that primarily causes leukopenia and thrombocytopenia. It is transmitted by Amblyomma americanum type of tick, that is, notable for their aggressive biting behavior, affinity for human hosts, and high prevalence. Developing vaccines or immunizations against HRTV is gaining importance as a public-health preventive strategy. The current study was planned to prioritize a multi-epitope stable mRNA vaccine model against HRTV from lead B-cell and T-cell epitopes (with IC50 < 100 nM) of HRTV proteome following advanced immunoinfo

Rocky Mountain spotted fever (RMSF) caused by Rickettsia rickettsii is the most fatal tick-borne disease in people and dogs in the Americas. This pathogen is transmitted by several hard ticks: Dermacentor species, Rhipicephalus sanguineus, and Amblyomma americanum. RMSF can quickly progress to a life-threatening illness with fatalities ranging from 30% to 80%. Doxycycline is the only treatment option, and currently, no methods are available to prevent RMSF. We previously reported that vaccination with R. rickettsii whole cell antigen vaccine (WCAV) with Montanide gel adjuvant offers protection

Ixodes scapularis is a primary vector of several important tick-borne pathogens including Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato, the causative bacterial genospecies complex of Lyme disease, Babesia microti, Anaplasma phagocytophilum, Borrelia miyamotoi, Ehrlichia muris eauclarensis, and Powassan virus. Salivary compounds secreted by I. scapularis during blood feeding are immunogenic and can elicit robust antibody responses in humans which can potentially be leveraged as surrogate markers of prior tick bite exposure. In this study, we investigate the potential of a tick secreted salivary serine prote

INTRODUCTION: Despite a high fatality rate in humans, little is known about the occurrence of Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever virus (CCHFV) in Cameroon. Hence, this pioneer study was started with the aim of determining the prevalence of CCHFV in domestic ruminants and its potential vector ticks in Cameroon.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study was carried out in two livestock markets of Yaoundé to collect blood and ticks from cattle, sheep, and goats. CCHFV-specific antibodies were detected in the plasma using a commercial ELISA assay and confirmed using a modified seroneutralization test. Ticks

Cytauxzoonosis is a severe tick transmitted protozoan disease of domestic cats, caused by Cytauxzoon felis. The disease is characterized by acute onset of high fever, depression, lethargy, inappentence, anorexia, icterus, dehydration, hemolytic anemia, and alteration of immune response. The aim of our study was to further detail the immune response of domestic cats to C. felis infection by comparing the differential expression of feline immune transcriptional elements during acute and chronic cytauxzoonosis. True single molecule sequencing (tSMS) was used to analyze the whole genome of acutely

Tick-borne spotted fever in Brazil is known to be caused by two agents, Rickettsia rickettsii and Rickettsia parkeri. Nothing was known about these agents in one area of the Atlantic rainforest biome of Bahia state, where during March to June 2016, 356 rural dogs and 69 horses were sampled and their sera were processed through indirect immunofluorescence assay against antigens of R. rickettsii, R. parkeri, Rickettsia amblyommatis and Rickettsia bellii. Ticks collected from these dogs and horses were molecularly tested for the presence of rickettsial DNA. Overall, 16.4% (58/356) dogs and 24.6%

During 2010-2016, tick specimens were solicited from veterinarians, biologists, and members of the public in Alaska. Eight species of ticks were recorded from domestic dogs. Some ticks were collected from dogs with recent travel histories to other countries or other U.S. states, which appears to explain records of ticks not native to Alaska such as Amblyomma americanum (L.) (lone star tick), Ixodes scapularis (Say) (blacklegged tick), and Ixodes ricinus (L.). However, we recorded Dermacentor variabilis (Say) (American dog tick) from dogs (and humans) both with and without travel history, sugge

Rickettsioses are re-emerging vector-borne zoonoses with a global distribution. Recently, Rickettsia sp. strain Atlantic rainforest has been associated with new human spotted-fever (SF) cases in Brazil, featuring particular clinical signs: eschar formation and lymphadenopathy. These cases have been associated with the tick species, Amblyomma ovale From 2010 until 2015, the Brazilian Health Department confirmed 11 human SF cases in the Maciço de Baturité region, Ceará, Brazil. The present study reports the circulation of Rickettsia spp. in vectors from this entirely new endemic area for SF. A t

Arthropod-borne diseases are a major problem whenever outdoor activities bring arthropods and people into contact. The arthropods discussed here include arachnids (ticks) and insects. Most arthropod bites and stings are minor, with the notable exception being bee-sting anaphylaxis. Ticks cause the most disease transmission. Key hard tick vectors include black-legged (Ixodes), dog (Dermacentor), and lone star (Amblyomma) ticks, which transmit Lyme and various rickettsial diseases. Insect repellents, permethrin sprays, and proper tick inspection reduce this risk significantly. Lyme disease and t

The book Australian Ticks by F.H.S. Roberts (1970) is a land-mark in Australian tick biology. But it is time for a new and improved book on the ticks of Australia. The present book has identification guides and accounts of the biology and diseases associated with the 16 species of ticks that may feed on domestic animals and humans in Australia. These comprise five argasid (soft) ticks: Argas persicus (poultry tick), Argas robertsi (Robert's bird tick), Ornithodoros capensis (seabird soft tick), O. gurneyi (kangaroo soft tick), Otobius megnini (spinose ear tick); and 11 ixodid (hard) ticks, Amb

As well as being vectors of many viral, bacterial, and protozoan pathogens of medical and veterinary importance, ticks harbour a variety of microorganisms which are not known to be pathogenic for vertebrate hosts. Continuous cell lines established from ixodid and argasid ticks could be infected with such endosymbiotic bacteria and endogenous viruses, but to date very few cell lines have been examined for their presence. DNA and RNA extracted from over 50 tick cell lines deposited in the Roslin Wellcome Trust Tick Cell Biobank (http://tickcells.roslin.ac.uk) were screened for presence of bacter

Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) evidence of a novel Ehrlichia organism was found recently in wild white-tailed deer, Odocoileus virginianus Zimmermann, and lone star ticks, Amblyomma americanum L., from the southeastern United States. To evaluate whether lone star tick parasitism was associated with the presence of this novel Ehrlichia organism in deer, 2 retrospective studies were conducted using specific nested PCR to test archived deer serum samples. The 1st study of 150 serum samples collected from a single deer population over a 15-yr period examined the temporal association between the p

The seasonal pattern of tick load on Bunaji cattle under traditional management in northern Nigeria was observed over 12 months to investigate the possibilities of strategic use of acaricide. Ticks were removed 2-3 times weekly by hand from 16 animals, counted and the species determined. Tick load was low in the dry season (2-5 ticks per animal per week), increased after the onset of the first scattered rains, reached a peak (40 ticks per animal per week) 1 month after the beginning of the heavy rains, and declined thereafter. The dominant tick species was Amblyomma variegatum; other species f
