Intraocular pressure and the corneal endothelium after neodymium-YAG laser posterior capsulotomy. Relative effects of aphakia and pseudophakia.

We studied intraocular pressure (IOP) changes and specular microscopic findings in 118 consecutive neodymium-YAG laser posterior capsulotomy procedures; 37 cases were aphakic, and 81 were pseudophakic. There was a significantly greater rise in IOP one hour after Nd-YAG laser treatment in the aphakic group than in the pseudophakic group (8.2 mm Hg vs 3.5 mm Hg, respectively). At one week postoperatively, IOPs in the aphakic group were still significantly elevated over baseline levels (3.6 mm Hg), while those in the pseudophakic group had returned to baseline levels. Differences in treatment bet

Phenotypic segregation of aphakia and Pitx3-null mutants reveals that Pitx3 deficiency increases consolidation of specific movement components.

Deficiency of the meso-diencephalic dopamine (mdDA) neuron specific transcription factor Pitx3 in aphakia (ak) mice results in the loss of the substantia nigra compacta (SNc). Concomitantly, reduced spontaneous locomotor behavior, symptoms reminiscent to those in Parkinson's disease, has been reported. However, the ak mouse line originates from the 1960s and has been compared to C57BL/6J inbred controls. Therefore, to define Pitx3 gene function in baseline and novelty-induced locomotor behavior and mdDA neuronal activity, we analyzed Pitx3-deficiency in a controlled genetic and epigenetic back…

Contrast (modulation) sensitivity functions measured in patients with high refractive error with emphasis on aphakia: I. Theoretical considerations.

Recently, alterations in contrast (modulation) sensitivity functions of patients with high refractive errors have been noted. For example, this seems to be a common finding in aphakia. In some measure the observed alterations are due to the effect of the corrective lens and the optics of the eyes. These optical effects (in addition to blur) must be factored out in order to determine whether residual effects on the visual system remain. The argument is applicable to photographs of sine wave fringes as well as devices designed to produce interference patterns directly on the retina. A simple mea…

Generation of the induced pluripotent stem cell line IOCVi002-A from a patient with the FOXE3-related sclerocornea-aphakia malformation.

Anterior segment dysgeneses (ASDs) are a heterogeneous group of ocular developmental anomalies commonly associated with severe visual disability in pediatric age. Here, we report the generation of the iPSC line IOCVi002-A from a patient with a homozygous pathogenic c.292 T > C (p.(Y98H)) variant in the FOXE3 gene causing an ASD phenotype characterized by sclerocornea and aphakia. IOCVi002-A cells shows normal morphology, typical stemness and pluripotency. This iPSC line can be used for in vitro disease modeling for developmental ocular anomalies affecting anterior structures of the eye.

Effective lens position and pseudophakic refraction prediction error at 10½ years of age in the Infant Aphakia Treatment Study.

BACKGROUND: The refraction prediction error (PE) for infants with intraocular lens (IOL) implantation is large, possibly related to an effective lens position (ELP) that is different than in adult eyes. If these eyes still have nonadult ELPs as they age, this could result in persistently large PE. We aimed to determine whether ELP or biometry at age 10½ years correlated with PE in children enrolled in the Infant Aphakia Treatment Study (IATS). METHODS: We compared the measured refraction of eyes randomized to primary IOL implantation to the "predicted refraction" calculated by the Holladay 1 …

The contribution of intraocular lens calculation accuracy to the refractive error predicted at 10 years in the Infant Aphakia Treatment Study.

PURPOSE: To determine the relative contribution of intraocular lens (IOL) calculation accuracy and ocular growth variability to the long-term refractive error predicted following pediatric cataract surgery. METHODS: Pseudophakic eyes of children enrolled in the Infant Aphakia Treatment Study (IATS) were included in this study. Initial absolute prediction error (APE) and 10-year APE were calculated using the initial biometry, IOL parameters, postoperative refractions, and mean rate of refractive growth. The cohort was divided into children with a low-initial APE (≤1.0 D) and a high-initial APE…
