Customized three-dimensional printed ceramic bone grafts for osseous defects: a prospective randomized study.

Ridge resorption can result in insufficient bone volume for implant surgery, necessitating bone substitutes to restore the resorption area. Recent advances in computer-aided design and manufacturing enable the use of alloplastic bone graft materials with customizable compositions or shapes. This randomized study evaluated the clinical effectiveness of a customized three-dimensional (3D) printed alloplastic bone material. Sixty patients requiring guided bone regeneration for implant installation following tooth extraction due to alveolar bone resorption were recruited at two institutions. The p

Atraumatic Fracture of Newer Generation Ceramic Head Three Days Post-op: A Case Report.

A 73-year-old female experienced an atraumatic fracture of a BIOLOX delta ceramic femoral head following uncomplicated right total hip arthroplasty using a ceramic-on-polyethylene bearing. The fracture occurred post-operatively, as revealed by radiography after the patient reported a clunking sensation and leg shortening. Revision surgery involved replacing the fractured head and liner with careful removal of ceramic debris. The patient recovered well with no further complications. This case highlights the rare occurrence of an atraumatic fracture in a newer-generation BIOLOX delta ceramic hea

Highly-Buckled Nanofibrous Ceramic Aerogels with Ultra-Large Stretchability and Tensile-Insensitive Thermal Insulation.

Ceramic aerogels have exhibited many superior characteristics with promising applications. As an attractive material system for thermal insulation under extreme conditions, ceramic aerogels are required to withstand complex thermomechanical stress to retain their super-insulating properties but, they often suffer from severe fracture damage that can lead to catastrophic failure. Herein, inspired by the tendrils of Parthenocissus, we report a design and synthesis of ultra-stretchable ceramic aerogels constructed by highly buckled nanofibers. The buckling of nanofibers is formed by asymmetric de

Efficacy of an Antibiotic Loaded Ceramic-Based Bone Graft Substitute for the Treatment of Infected Non-Unions.

The treatment of non-unions is often complicated by segmental bone defects and bacterial colonization. Because of the limited availability of autologous bone grafts, tissue engineering focuses on antibiotic-loaded bone graft substitutes. HACaS+G is a resorbable calcium sulphate-hydroxyapatite loaded with gentamicin. The osteoinductive, osteoconductive, and anti-infective effect of HACaS+G has already been demonstrated in clinical studies on patients with chronic osteomyelitis. However, especially for the treatment of infected non-unions with segmental bone defects by HACaS+G, reliable clinical

Mid-term outcomes of the R3™ delta ceramic acetabular system in total hip arthroplasty.

BACKGROUND: Whilst bony fixation of hip replacement has stable solutions, there remains controversy over which bearing best optimizes longevity and function. Ceramic-on-ceramic (CoC) bearing combinations are associated with lower risk of revision due to aseptic loosening and dislocation. Evidence for long-term functional outcomes of modern, 4th generation CoC bearings is limited. The aim of this study was to analyze outcomes and complications of the R3™ Acetabular System (Smith & Nephew, Inc., Cordova, TN, USA) in combination with BIOLOX® Delta ceramic femoral head in patients undergoing prima
