Effect of Low-Level Laser Therapy as an Adjunct to Scaling and Root Planning on TNF-Alpha Levels in Gingival Crevicular Fluid and Glycosylated Haemoglobin Levels in Type-2 Diabetic Patients with Periodontitis: A Comparative Study.

INTRODUCTION: Periodontitis is considered as the 6th complication of diabetes. Laser therapy has been used in periodontics aiming at reducing bacteria to stimulate regeneration of tissue, and for its anti- inflammatory effect. AIM: To compare the clinical parameters, HbA1c level in blood & Tumour necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) level in gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) in type 2 diabetes patients with chronic generalized periodontitis at baseline, 3 months and 6 months after scaling and root planing (SRP) alone and after SRP along with low-level laser therapy (LLLT). A total of 30 patients diagn

Investigating the effectiveness of an intraoperative decision support guided fluid therapy intervention on postoperative outcome of high-risk patients undergoing high-risk abdominal surgery: protocol for an international multicentre stepped-wedge cluster-randomised implementation trial.

BACKGROUND: Inappropriate fluid administration can impact patient outcome. Intraoperative advanced haemodynamic monitoring coupled with a treatment protocol based on stroke volume optimisation can help determine the appropriate timing for fluid boluses. Although recommended by several anaesthesia societies, this strategy is rarely implemented because protocols are complex and compliance is often poor. The Acumen Assisted Fluid Management (AFM) software is a decision support system that uses machine learning to predict fluid responsiveness and individualise fluid therapy. AFM reportedly predict…

Comparative evaluation of semaphorin-4D, peptidylarginine deiminase-2, and matrix metalloproteinase-8 levels of gingival crevicular fluid in periodontally healthy and Stage III periodontitis smoker and non-smoker patients before and after non-surgical periodontal therapy.

BACKGROUND: This study was designed to assess the influence of non-surgical periodontal therapy (NSPT) on gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) levels of semaphorin-4D (SEMA-4D), peptidylarginine deiminase-2 (PAD-2), and matrix metalloproteinase-8 (MMP-8) levels in periodontally healthy, Stage III periodontitis non-smoker and smoker patients. METHODS: Sixty patients were equally divided into three groups, Group I: Periodontally healthy, Group II: Non-smokers with Stage III periodontitis, and Group III: Smokers with Stage III periodontitis. The patients underwent NSPT with clinical and biochemical p

Effect of Non-surgical Periodontal Therapy on Levels of Ghrelin and Tumor Necrosis Factor-Alpha (TNF-α) in the Gingival Crevicular Fluid of Healthy and Periodontitis Patients With and Without Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus: A Clinico-Biochemical Study.

PURPOSE: Periodontitis, a chronic inflammatory disease, is closely associated with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Ghrelin, a stomach-derived peptide hormone, may influence periodontal health by modulating inflammation through its receptor growth hormone secretagogue receptor (GHS-R1a), notably by inhibiting lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) production in oral epithelial cells. AIM: To compare and correlate the gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) ghrelin and TNF-α levels in healthy individuals and stage III grade B periodontitis patients with and without T2DM b

Fluid overload at start of continuous renal replacement therapy is associated with poorer clinical condition and outcome: a prospective observational study on the combined use of bioimpedance vector analysis and serum N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide measurement.

INTRODUCTION: It is unclear whether the fluid status, as determined by bioimpedance vector analysis (BIVA) combined with serum N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptides (NT-pro-BNP) measurement, is associated with treatment outcome among patients receiving continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT). Our objective was to answer this question. METHODS: Patients who were in the intensive care units of a university teaching hospital and who required CRRT were screened for enrollment. For the enrolled patients, BIVA and serum NT-pro BNP measurement were performed just before the start of CRRT an

Clearance of interstitial fluid (ISF) and CSF (CLIC) group-part of Vascular Professional Interest Area (PIA), updates in 2022-2023. Cerebrovascular disease and the failure of elimination of Amyloid-β from the brain and retina with age and Alzheimer's disease: Opportunities for therapy.

This editorial summarizes advances from the Clearance of Interstitial Fluid and Cerebrospinal Fluid (CLIC) group, within the Vascular Professional Interest Area (PIA) of the Alzheimer's Association International Society to Advance Alzheimer's Research and Treatment (ISTAART). The overarching objectives of the CLIC group are to: (1) understand the age-related physiology changes that underlie impaired clearance of interstitial fluid (ISF) and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) (CLIC); (2) understand the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying intramural periarterial drainage (IPAD) in the brain; (3)

Maternal hydration for increasing amniotic fluid volume in oligohydramnios and normal amniotic fluid volume.

BACKGROUND: Oligohydramnios (reduced amniotic fluid) may be responsible for malpresentation problems, umbilical cord compression, concentration of meconium in the liquor, and difficult or failed external cephalic version. Simple maternal hydration has been suggested as a way of increasing amniotic fluid volume in order to reduce some of these problems. OBJECTIVES: The objective of this review was to assess the effects of maternal hydration on amniotic fluid volume and measures of pregnancy outcome. SEARCH STRATEGY: The Cochrane Pregnancy and Childbirth Group trials register and the Cochrane

Worldwide impact of oral rehydration therapy.

Oral rehydration therapy (ORT) has had a dramatic global impact. The worldwide consequences of this therapy are discussed in four categories: (1) adoption of ORT as the primary therapy for acute dehydrating diarrhea; (2) establishment of national ORT programs; (3) scientific knowledge gained from studies into intestinal absorption of oral rehydration solutions; and (4) implications of ORT for the next decade. The Diarrheal Disease Control Program has been assigned a high priority by the World Health Organization. It now includes 99% of the population of the developing world, although it is not

Rapid fluid replacement for severe hypovolemia--human subject trials.

Successful resuscitation of a hypovolemic patient often requires rapid intravenous administration of massive amounts of fluid. A new fluid system, incorporating a 14 French percutaneous catheter and a fluid reservoir, was recently developed and successfully tested in animals. We report the system's use in five patients with severe hypovolemia following trauma. In two cases, the experimental high-flow system successfully resuscitated the patients, allowing them to be transferred for further care. Problems associated with the use of the system included complications with central line placement a

Volume depletion versus dehydration: how understanding the difference can guide therapy.

Although often used interchangeably, dehydration and volume depletion are not synonyms. Dehydration refers to loss of total-body water, producing hypertonicity, which now is the preferred term in lieu of dehydration, whereas volume depletion refers to a deficit in extracellular fluid volume. In particular, hypertonicity implies intracellular volume contraction, whereas volume depletion implies blood volume contraction. Using a case of hyperglycemic hypertonic nonketosis as an example, we examine the changing composition of body fluid spaces to explore the distinction between dehydration and hy
