Adolescent Psychological Adaptation: The Impact of Daily Levels and Instability in Psychological Need Satisfaction and Frustration.

INTRODUCTION: Psychological need satisfaction and frustration are distinct processes that have unique effects on adolescents' psychological adaptation. Beyond their average levels, psychological satisfaction and frustration exhibit meaningful daily instability that is expected to have implications for adolescents' psychological adaptation. However, research directly examining both average levels and instability in psychological need satisfaction and frustration is rare. METHODS: A sample of 107 adolescents (ages 11-18; 38.3% female; 64.5% White/European American) across the United States was

Conceptualizing a healing-centered positive youth development model for LGBTQ+ youth of color living with mental health concerns.

Positive youth development (PYD) is a strengths-based approach to support young people as they build on their collective assets, allowing them to thrive and contribute to their communities. Emphasis on the strengths and assets of youth has been shown to improve the overall mental and emotional well-being. Yet, traditional PYD models (i.e., five/six Cs models) were developed to meet the circumstances of primarily White cisgender heterosexual youth while not considering the experiences and developmental needs of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ+) youth of color (YOC) with me

Factors affecting 12-month unplanned readmissions for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease patients: the effect of mental disorders in an Australian cohort.

BACKGROUND: Many individuals with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) experience frequent hospitalization and readmissions, which is burdensome on the health system. This study aims to investigate factors associated with unplanned readmissions and mortality following a COPD-related hospitalization over a 12-month period in Australia, focusing on mental disorders and accounting for the acute phase of the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study using linked hospitalization and mortality records identified individuals aged ≥40 years who had at least one hospital admissi

The Broken Promise of Institutional Psychiatry: Sexuality, Women and Mental Illness in 1950s Lebanon.

This article traces the case of Hala, a woman chronic patient of the Lebanon Hospital for Mental and Nervous Disorders (LHMND) in late 1950s Lebanon. Her story reveals a conglomeration of actors, expertise and technologies that regulated both her sexuality and mental illness, as she was moved, returned, then moved again, from the care of the family to the care of the psychiatric institution. By reconstructing an ethnographic case of the story of Hala, the article tackles an under-investigated area of research at the intersection of subjectivity, sexuality, psychiatry and family life. The case

Experiences of Detention under the Mental Health Act for Adults with Anorexia Nervosa.

UNLABELLED: People with Anorexia Nervosa are often resistant to treatment and can be detained under the Mental Health Act. Detention can be distressing for some client groups; however, there is little research to explore how people with Anorexia Nervosa experience detention and how these experiences impact on recovery. This study utilized a qualitative methodology to develop a model for understanding how people perceive, experience and process detention under the Mental Health Act. Data from 12 participants was analysed using constructivist grounded theory. Four overarching categories conceptu

Family planning for the mentally disordered and retarded.

Increasing perception of healthy reproductive functioning and conception prevention has been accompanied by greater recognition of the needs for emotional and sexual fulfillment of individuals with mental disorder or retardation. Although family planning services have burgeoned in the United States and many other countries and the special concerns of mentally disordered and retarded persons have been well documented, organized efforts to include counseling on fertility regulation in mental health and in training programs have, with few exceptions, been sparse. Recent trends are discussed in te

More than movement: a conceptual exploration of the convergence of social-emotional learning and physical literacy.

This paper develops an integrative framework for bringing social-emotional learning (SEL) and physical literacy (PL) into closer conceptual and pedagogical alignment. Rather than treating SEL and PL as separate domains, the paper positions them as mutually reinforcing lenses for understanding how movement experiences can support holistic development across health and physical education, community sport and recreation, outdoor and play-based settings, and lifespan physical activity contexts. Ecological systems theory provides the primary architecture, while socio-constructivist, self-determinat

Addressing Spirituality and Religion in Mental Health Graduate Coursework: An Interdisciplinary Survey of Faculty Infusion Strategies in the United States.

Accreditation and ethical standards across the professions of counseling, marriage and family therapy (MFT), psychology, and social work include spirituality and/or religion (S/R) as core areas of multicultural diversity that will ideally be addressed in training and clinical practice. However, many graduate programs face logistic challenges for equipping students with basic attitudes, knowledge, and skills to attend to patients' S/R. The purpose of this study was to explore strategies for infusing content related to spiritual and religious competencies into mental health graduate coursework i

Network Analysis of ADHD and ODD Symptoms: Novel Insights or Redundant Findings with the Latent Variable Model?

A latent variable model (LVM) and network analysis (NA) were applied to mother and father ratings of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) symptoms to determine if NA offers unique insights relative to the LVM. ADHD-inattention (IN), ADHD-hyperactivity/impulsivity (HI), and ODD symptoms along with academic competence behaviors (reading, arithmetic, and writing skills) were rated by mothers and fathers of Brazilian (n = 894), Thai (n = 2075), and United States (n = 817) children (Mage = 9.04, SD = 2.12, 49.5% females). LVM indicated that (1) the

Seeing it my way or your way: frontoparietal brain areas sustain viewpoint-independent perspective selection processes.

A hallmark of human social interaction is the ability to consider other people's mental states, such as what they see, believe, or desire. Prior neuroimaging research has predominantly investigated the neural mechanisms involved in computing one's own or another person's perspective and largely ignored the question of perspective selection. That is, which brain regions are engaged in the process of selecting between self and other perspectives? To address this question, the current fMRI study used a behavioral paradigm that required participants to select between competing visual perspectives.

Duties of a psychiatric-neurological consultation/liaison service in a prison setting.

Demonstrated are standards for diagnostic and therapeutic competence deriving from the duties of a psychiatric-neurological consultation/liaison service maintained in a German prison over a 4-year period. Homogeneous age distribution (32.5 +/- 4.4 years) and the lower social status of the patients characterized the mental disorders observed in the male multinational group of patients investigated (n = 170). These included schizophrenic, affective, neurotic and psychosocial stress disorders, alcohol and drug dependence and specific personality disorders. Besides tendencies towards dissimulation

Psychiatric consultation for competency to refuse medical treatment. A retrospective study of patient characteristics and outcome.

Forty-one psychiatric consultations on medical-surgical inpatients for competency to refuse medical treatment were studied retrospectively. The competent (n = 16) and incompetent (n = 25) patients were compared in terms of demographic data, diagnoses, clinical variables, details about treatment refusal, and outcome following competency assessment. The incompetent patients tended to be men, the focus of more urgent requests, and to have refused operations. The incompetent patients tended to have organic brain syndromes; the competent patients had personality disorders, adjustment disorders, or

Death row inmate characteristics, adjustment, and confinement: a critical review of the literature.

This article reviews and summarizes research on death row inmates. The contributions and weaknesses of death row demographic data, clinical studies, and research based on institutional records are critiqued. Our analysis shows that death row inmates are overwhelmingly male and disproportionately Southern. Racial representation remains controversial. Frequently death row inmates are intellectually limited and academically deficient. Histories of significant neurological insult are common, as are developmental histories of trauma, family disruption, and substance abuse. Rates of psychological di
