Sera obtained during a dengue-2 epidemic from individuals with primary or secondary group B arbovirus infections contained cross-reactive antibody against several viruses in this group. Hemagglutination-inhibition antibody titers of the immunoglobulin M fractions from these sera revealed a rise in antibody specific for dengue-2. The acute and convalescent sera in over half of the secondary infection group also had low-level unchanging immunoglobulin M antibody titers to yellow fever which implicated yellow fever immunization as the primary infection.

A high-pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC) assay for measuring picomole quantities of nitrosothiol in biological samples was developed. The assay utilizes the catalytic reduction of nitrosothiol by mercuric cation (Hg2+). Released nitrogen oxide reacts with sulfanilamide (SA) and N-(1-napthyl)ethylenediamine (NNED) to form a stable azo dye. We studied the signal induced by the anti-TAPA-1 antibody and compared it to the signal induced by anti-IgM antibodies in a human B cell line, OCl-LY8. We found that exposure of these cells to either antibody resulted in a rapid increase in protein tyrosine phosphorylation which was prevented by inhibitors of tyrosine kinases. Tyrosine phosphorylation was an early event in the cascase leading to the antiproliferative effect of the anti-TAPA-1 antibody. In an attempt to encourage more intensive studies on the control of immunologic abnormalities associated with aging, the six different approaches which have been attempted are reviewed briefly. They are as follows: (a) internal body temperature control, (b) tissue ablation, (c) dietary manipulation, (d) genetic manipulation, (d) genetic manipulation (e) cell therapy and (f) chemical therapy. The reactivities of N-iodosuccinimide and iodine with various goitrogenic compounds were studied with dimethylsulfoxide through which nitrogen had been bubbled as a solvent. Although iodine does not react with all of the compounds, N-iodosuccinimide does react with all of them. N-Iodosuccinimide may, therefore, serve as an interesting model for the "active iodine" of the thyroid.

Antinuclear antibodies were detected by immunofluorescence in most sera from rabbits immunized with whole human serum emulsified in Freund's complete adjuvant. Four of 14 sera from rabbits immunized with Cohn fractions III, IV-1, or IV-4 also gave positive nuclear fluorescence with human leukocyte nuclei. Other human and animal nuclei gave negative results with these rabbit antisera.
