The effect of several solubilized monosaccharides on epidermal cell migration from skin explants of the adult newt was examined. The ability of epidermal cells to migrate on substrates coated with these same sugars or with wheat germ agglutinin (WGA) was also determined. A study of 2-deoxyglucose transport into polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMN) was performed in three patients with glycogen storage disease (GSD) type Ib. The rate of 2-deoxyglucose transport into GSD Ib PMN was 30% of that of cells of normal controls. In GSD Ib lymphocytes, transport was normal. Km for 2-deoxyglucose in the PMN of one patient was within the normal range. Fanconi-Bickel syndrome (FBS), or glycogen storage disease type XI, is a rare, well-defined clinical entity. Recently, this disease was elucidated to link mutations in the SLC2A2 gene in many ethnic groups, indicating that FBS is a single gene disease. We report here an 8-month-old Turkish girl who developed characteristic findings of FBS. However, no mutation was detected in the protein-coding region of the SLC2A2 gene. Therefore, we propose that further molecular analysis is needed to determine whether other genes are involved in FBS.

Cysticercosis caused by the metacestode of the tapeworm Taenia solium causes economic losses in pork meat production, as well as being a human health hazard in some parts of the world. Functional heterogeneity among pancreatic beta cells is a characteristic feature of the islets of Langerhans. Under physiological conditions, beta cells in the pancreas of fed rats exhibited heterogeneous immunohistochemical staining for insulin and glucokinase. The effect of various treatments on the activity of anti-treponemal lymphotoxin (ATL) produced by lymphocytes of syphilitic rabbits was studied. Treponema pallidum-killing activity of ATL was slightly reduced after heating at 56 degrees C and completely abolished at 100 degrees C. The significant reduction of the activity was also obtained after exposure of ATL to acidic conditions (pH 1-5) at room temperature, or by treatment with papain and neuraminidase.
