Severe tortuosity but not altered retinal vessel diameters in children and young adults with Familial Mediterranean Fever: a case-control study.

Familial Mediterranean Fever (FMF) is the most prevalent autoinflammatory disorder. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the potential association between retinal vascular abnormalities and an increased risk of cardiovascular disease in patients with FMF. A total of 42 patients with FMF and 43 age- and sex-matched healthy controls were enrolled in this study. All participants underwent bilateral fundus examination and fundus photography using a non-mydriatic fundus camera. Retinal microcirculation was evaluated by measuring the calibers quantitatively by calculating the central r

Minimizing Pupil Size Dependence in Flicker ERG Using Stiles-Crawford Compensation.

PURPOSE: This study determined the impact of the Stiles-Crawford effect (SCE) on electroretinograms (ERGs). Compensating for the SCE can improve the diagnostic reliability of ERGs by providing a stimulus minimally affected by pupil size. METHODS: Flicker ERGs were recorded from 10 healthy subjects at 3-minute intervals over 21 minutes after mydriasis. The RETeval system adjusted retinal illuminance in real time based on pupil size measurements, using a Troland stimulus and preset SCE compensation factors (ρdevice) of 0, 0.05, 0.085, and 0.12 mm-2. RESULTS: Larger pupil areas led to prolonged

The BONSAI (Brain and Optic Nerve Study with Artificial Intelligence) deep learning system can accurately identify pediatric papilledema on standard ocular fundus photographs.

BACKGROUND: Pediatric papilledema often reflects an underlying severe neurologic disorder and may be difficult to appreciate, especially in young children. Ocular fundus photographs are easy to obtain even in young children and in nonophthalmology settings. The aim of our study was to ascertain whether an improved deep-learning system (DLS), previously validated in adults, can accurately identify papilledema and other optic disk abnormalities in children. METHODS: The DLS was tested on mydriatic fundus photographs obtained in a multiethnic pediatric population (<17 years) from three centers (

Examination of retinal vascular trajectory in schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.

AIM: Evidence suggests microvascular dysfunction (wider retinal venules and narrower arterioles) in schizophrenia (SCZ) and bipolar disorder (BD). The vascular development is synchronous with neuronal development in the retina and brain. The retinal vessel trajectory is related to retinal nerve fiber layer thinning and cerebrovascular abnormalities in SCZ and BD and has not yet been examined. Hence, in this study we examined the retinal vascular trajectory in SCZ and BD in comparison with healthy volunteers (HV). METHODS: Retinal images were acquired from 100 HV, SCZ patients, and BD patients
