BACKGROUND: In everyday life women with disabilities are facing different challenges and discriminatory aspects. Especially the issue of pregnancy and motherhood is still critically discussed and subject to taboo. The aim of the present study is to survey the extent of structural measures on the one hand and additional specific service offers on the other hand that have been implemented in order to ensure accessibility and equitable care for women with disabilities in the obstetric departments in Austria.
METHOD: Data were collected by a self-developed non-standardised questionnaire, evaluati

In medical specialties, such as anaesthesia, the use of simulation has increased over the past 15 years. Medical simulation attempts to reproduce important clinical situations to practise team training or individual skills in a risk free environment. For a long time simulators have only been used by the airline industry and the military. Simulation as a training tool for practicing critical situations in obstetrics is not very common yet. Experience and routine are crucial to evaluate a medical emergency correctly and to take the appropriate measures. Nowadays the obstetrician requires a combi…

BACKGROUND: Hemorrhage remains a leading cause of severe maternal morbidity and death. In addition to the appropriate use of oxytocic agents for uterine atony, surgical techniques, including uterine tamponade, major vessel ligation, compression sutures, and hysterectomy, may be required. On the rare occasions they are needed, the instruments and equipment required for these surgical techniques may not be readily available.
OBJECTIVE: To record our experience with an obstetric hemorrhage equipment tray for surgical management of severe obstetric hemorrhage.
METHODS: A severe obstetric hemorrh

BACKGROUND: There have been many reports of a higher incidence of 'obstetric complications' in the histories of schizophrenics than of controls, but because of the methodological shortcomings of most of these comparisons the relationship remains controversial.
METHOD: Comprehensive records covering all psychiatric hospital admissions and all hospital deliveries in Scotland since 1971 made it possible to identify the obstetric records of people born in 1971-74 who were subsequently admitted to hospital with a diagnosis of schizophrenia, and then to compare their standardised obstetric records

OBJECTIVE: In obstetrics, walking or ambulatory epidural analgesia (APDD) represents an evolution of non-ambulatory epidural analgesia (APD), allowing women to maintain mobility during labor. In a context of increasing demand for more physiological childbirth, it is important to assess its impact on maternal satisfaction and obstetric safety. This article aims to compare maternal satisfaction and obstetric outcomes between women who received APDD and those who received non-ambulatory APD.
METHODS: We conducted an ambispective cross-sectional cohort study in a tertiary maternity unit between J…

Objective: To implement use of obstetric (OB) hospitalist telemedicine services (TeleOB) to support clinicians facing OB emergencies in low-resource hospital settings. Methods: TeleOB was staffed by OB hospitalists working at a tertiary maternity center. The service was available via real-time high-definition audio/video technology for providers at 17 outlying hospitals across a health system spanning two states. The initial 25 service activations are described. Results: TeleOB supported 17 deliveries, two postpartum emergency department (ED) consultations, and four antenatal ED consultations.

The outcome of obstetric brachial plexus palsy depends on the severity of the lesion of the nerve fibers. The aim of the prospective study is to evaluate if differences in force used in downward traction on the fetal head correlate to the number of nerve roots affected. At final neurological examination at 18 months of age, complete neurological recovery occurred in 80 of 98 children (82%). Downward traction of the fetal head was applied more often and with greater force in the group with persistent damage. There was a significant correlation between the force used to the number of nerve roots

BACKGROUND: Each year, teaching hospitals across the United States experience an influx of new medical residents starting on July 1st, while the previous year's residents advance to higher levels of postgraduate education. This phenomenon, known as the "July Effect," refers to the theoretical increase in adverse patient outcomes due to inexperienced resident physicians assuming more independent roles in patient care.

Medical-legal liability remains a constant concern to obstetricians because the majority of physicians are sued at least once in their caree … ses of fetal and newborn brain injury. Enhanced basic science and human physiology education during obstetrics and gynecology residency training may both aid in the clinical management of atypical, challenging cases and provide the knowledge base to allow physicians to confidently address junk science allegations should they arise.

Maternal sepsis is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, with a significant impact in resource-limited settings like India. The Sepsis in Obstetrics Score (SOS) has been validated as an effective tool to predict intensive care needs in obstetric sepsis. This prospective observational study, conducted at Gandhi Medical College, Bhopal, from January 2021 to June 2022, included 225 antenatal and postnatal women meeting two or more Systemic Inflammatory Response Syndrome (SIRS) criteria. The study found that higher SOS scores were associated with worse maternal and fetal outcomes, …

Enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) refers to a comprehensive, multidisciplinary, evidence-based perioperative care pathway designed to minimize surgical stress and accelerate postoperative recovery. Initially adopted in colorectal surgery, the ERAS framework has expanded to multiple fields, including obstetrics and gynecology. However, as with any significant shift in clinical practice, there are challenges to be addressed, successfully incorporating ERAS principles into everyday care requires institutions to adjust protocols, restructure care pathways, and involve multiple stakeholders. "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it." This maxim underscores the importance of historical awareness in medicine, particularly for obstetricians and gynecologists (ObGyns). ObGyns significantly impact societal health through their care for pregnant women, fetuses, and newborns, uniquely positioning them to advocate for health initiatives with lasting societal benefits. Despite its importance, the history of medicine is underrepresented in medical curricula, missing opportunities to foster critical thinking and ethical decision-making. In today's climate of threatened
