INTRODUCTION: Facial morphogenesis is regulated by several cellular interactions that are mediated by numerous morphogenetic signals. Based on the existing evidence, we hypothesize that oral cleft-associated single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) are involved in the normal range of human face development. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the association between SNPs in oral cleft-related genes and variations in the normal range of facial morphology.
METHOD: A sample of healthy Brazilian teenagers (aged between 11 and 18 years old) were screened and collected. Frontal facial digitize

BACKGROUND: Anticoagulant rodenticides (ARs) are used globally to manage pest rodent populations. However, resistance to ARs in target rodent populations challenges pest control efforts and can increase risks to nontarget species. Resistance is frequently associated with nonsynonymous single nucleotide polymorphisms (nsSNPs) in the Vkorc1 gene, and this study carried out the first Vkorc1 survey of introduced rats on the Australian mainland.
RESULTS: We identified three species of introduced rat using the cytochrome b gene across Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney: Rattus rattus (Linnaeus 1

Genetic factors contribute to 60-70% of the variability in rheumatoid arthritis (RA). However, few studies have used genetic variants to predict RA risk. This study aimed to enhance RA risk prediction by leveraging single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) through machine-learning algorithms, utilizing Women's Health Initiative data. We developed four predictive models: 1) based on common RA risk factors, 2) model 1 incorporating polygenic risk scores (PRS) with principal components, 3) model 1 and SNPs after feature reduction, and 4) model 1 and SNPs with kernel principal component analysis. BACKGROUND: High malaria burden remains a remarkable challenge in Nigeria. The high prevalence has been attributed to a number of factors, including the continued evolution of resistance to antimalarial drugs by Plasmodium. However, the actual occurrence of antimalarial drug resistance in the country has not been well-documented. This study was aimed at screening for molecular markers of multidrug resistant Plasmodium species in individuals with parasitaemia in Kogi State, Nigeria.
METHOD: Blood samples drawn from 600 symptomatic patients who consented to be recruited for the study were teste

Rabies is a deadly neurotropic, zoonotic disease with a mortality rate of 100% after symptoms appear. Rabies virus (RABV) is the primary cause of rabies disease in humans, and it mainly spreads via dog bites in developing countries. Over the course of RABV evolution, multiple RABV variants, called clades, have emerged. However, our understanding of these clades is limited, as the only method to identify a clade is sequencing, followed by phylogeny. In this study, we have developed a rapid, PCR-based method for typing two RABV clades. We utilised highly conserved amino acid changes specific to

Immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) is an autoimmune-mediated hemorrhagic disease. Emerging evidence indicates that FOXO1 SNPs are related to the immune dysregulation of several autoimmune diseases suggesting that FOXO1 may be involved in inflammation and pathologic activities in patients with ITP. This study aimed to evaluate whether FOXO1 gene single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) are associated with susceptibility to ITP and clinical priorities of concern include bleeding severity and sensitivity of glucocorticoid treatment. This study recruited 327 newly diagnosed ITP and 220 healthy controls.

The base excision repair (BER) pathway is a precise and versatile mechanism of DNA repair that is initiated by DNA glycosylases. Endonuclease VIII-like 1 (NEIL1) is a bifunctional glycosylase/abasic site (AP) lyase that excises a damaged base and subsequently cleaves the phosphodiester backbone. NEIL1 is able to recognize and hydrolyze a broad range of oxidatively-induced base lesions and substituted ring-fragmented guanines, including aflatoxin-induced 8,9-dihydro-8-(2,6-diamino-4-oxo-3,4-dihydropyrimid-5-yl-formamido)-9-hydroxyaflatoxin B1 (AFB1-FapyGua). Due to NEIL1's protective role again

Cardiorespiratory fitness is a key component of health-related fitness. It is a necessary focus of improvement, especially for those that have poor fitness and are classed as untrained. However, much research has shown individuals respond differentially to identical training programs, suggesting the involvement of a genetic component in individual exercise responses. Previous research has focused predominantly on a relatively low number of candidate genes and their overall influence on exercise responsiveness. However, examination of gene-specific alleles may provide a greater level of underst

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a highly prevalent form of neoplasm worldwide. Capecitabine, an oral antimetabolite, is widely used for CRC treatment; however, there exists substantial variation in individual therapy response. This may be due to genetic variations in genes involved in capecitabine pharmacodynamics (PD). In this study, we investigated the role of single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) related to capecitabine's PD on disease-free survival (DFS) in CRC patients under adjuvant treatment. Thirteen SNPs in the TYMS, ENOSF1, MTHFR, ERCC1/2, and XRCC1/3 genes were genotyped in 142 CRC pati

Temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) may affect up to 25% of the population, with almost 70% of these TMD cases developing malpositioning of the disc over time in what is known as internal derangement (ID). Despite significant efforts, the molecular mechanism underlying disease progression is not yet very well known. In this study, the role of COL12A1 rs970547 and rs240736 polymorphisms as potential genetic factors regulating ID was investigated. The study included 124 Caucasian patients of both sexes after disc displacement without reduction (DDwoR) in either one or two temporomandibular joints

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of malocclusion cases in the orthodontic specialist clinic in Airlangga University's Dental Hospital in Surabaya, Indonesia, in 2014-2016 is fairly high, as 55.34% of the occurrences were identified as class II skeletal malocclusion. This type of skeletal malocclusion, which is usually recognized in adults, occurs as a result of variation during growth and development. Lately, there have been many reports on gene polymorphisms of COL1A1 and COL11A1, which are assumed to be associated with class II skeletal malocclusion in Caucasians.
PURPOSE: This study aims to anal
