Knee chondrocalcinosis: an ultrasonographic study of the hyalin cartilage.

PURPOSE: The purpose of the present research was to test the diagnostic value of ultrasonography (US) to detect chondrocalcinosis in the hyalin cartilage (HC). METHOD: This was tested on both knees of 21 selected patients with a history of unilateral HC and 19 controls. In Group, I (US), evaluation was performed on selected knees. The selection was based on the evidence of HC on previous radiographs. In Group II, US examination of the contralateral side of the same cohort was performed first and radiographic picture was done as a second step. RESULTS: Ultrasonically, detectable calcification

[Early diagnosis of Lyme arthritis].

Lyme-Arthritis is one of the most frequent manifestations of Lyme disease. Transient arthritides may already develop in the early disease stage. However, typical Lyme arthritis manifests weeks to months after the infection as intermittent mon- or oligoarthritis predominantly affecting the knees. Massive knee effusions may lead to popliteal cysts that often rupture. Chronic arthritides are rare. The diagnosis of Lyme arthritis mainly is based on clinical grounds and confirmed by laboratory tests. Direct detection of the causing agent by culture is difficult and not suitable for clinical use. Tumors about the knee in children.

Tumors are rare causes of knee symptoms in children but must be considered in the differential diagnosis of pediatric knee pain in order to avoid errors in treatment that could result in loss of limb or even life. Experience with 199 bone and soft-tissue tumors about the knee in children are reviewed. The majority of lesions were benign bone tumors (n = 101), with osteocartilaginous exostoses, nonossifying fibromas, and chondroblastomas predominating. Malignant bone tumors (n = 59) were less frequent, and osteosarcoma (n = 48) was by far the most common sarcoma. Soft-tissue lesions (n = 31) we

Structural factors associated with Baker's cyst volume in degenerative knees: A large MRI-based cohort study.

PurposeTo evaluate structural factors associated with Baker's cyst volume and determine whether cyst enlargement is related to medial meniscus posterior root tear (MMPRT), medial meniscus extrusion (MME), posterior tibial slope (PTS), and radiographic osteoarthritis severity.MethodsThis retrospective study included 876 knee MRI examinations with MRI-confirmed Baker's cysts after predefined exclusions. Baker's cyst volume, MMPRT status, MME, PTS, and Kellgren-Lawrence osteoarthritis grade were assessed using standardized imaging protocols. Factors associated with cyst volume were evaluated usin

Effects of Sono-feedback during aspiration of Baker's cysts: A controlled clinical trial.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether (diagnostic and interventional) ultrasound imaging can be used to provide visual feedback affecting treatment outcome (pain and disability). DESIGN: Controlled clinical trial. SUBJECTS: A total of 52 patients with (ultrasonographically confirmed) symptomatic Baker's cysts were enrolled. METHODS: The cysts were drained under ultrasound guidance and, if necessary, corticosteroid injections were given on the follow-up visit. In group I (n = 26) the patients did not observe the procedures on the ultrasound (US) screen. In group II (n = 26) the US images/videos we

Baker cyst as seen on a PET/CT scan.

We present the case of a 48-year-old woman who had been diagnosed with multiple myeloma a year ago. She had persistent pain in her right knee that she tended to ignore. As part of her follow-up she underwent a PET/CT scan that did not show any metastatic lesions. However, a focal rounded area of FDG uptake behind her right knee showed a fluid density on the CT scan. A presumptive diagnosis of Baker cyst was suggested. Review of her previous MRI report performed at another hospital corroborated this finding.

Midcalf ultrasonography for the diagnosis of ruptured Baker's cysts.

Clinically significant and palpable enlargement of the gastrocnemio-semimembranosus bursa is known as a Baker's cyst. Baker's cysts may rupture, resulting in a swollen, painful leg that is clinically indistinguishable from acute deep vein thrombosis. For this reason, ruptured Baker's cysts are sometimes called pseudothrombophlebitis. The purpose of this study was to determine the incidence of ruptured Baker's cysts, and to evaluate the role of ultrasonography in the diagnosis of this condition. The hospital records of 106 patients (43 men and 63 women) who were referred to the vascular surgica

A former hockey player with knee and calf pain.

A 37-year-old man presented with severe pain in his left knee and calf. He had no other joint pain, fever, chills, or dysuria. He had previously gone to another hospital, where x-rays of the knees and legs reportedly showed inflammation and arthritis. He had been given oxycodone-acetaminophen, but the pain continued.

[Pigmented villonodular synovitis. Diffuse and localized forms in children].

UNLABELLED: Pigmented villonodular synovitis (PVS) is characterized by a locally aggressive synovial proliferation that engenders progressive destruction of cartilage and bone. Two cases, a diffuse and a localized form, are reported. CASE REPORT: 1) A 9.9-year-old boy followed up for a popliteal cyst presented with chronic arthritis of the left knee. Aspiration yielded a bloody synovial fluid. MRI showed a heterogeneous synovial process with decreased signal in both T1- and T2-weighted images. The diagnosis of PVS was made on histology of an excisional biopsy. A complete open synovectomy was

Ruptured Popliteal Aneurysms: A Case Series and Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Ruptured popliteal artery aneurysm (rPAA) is a rare event that represents 2.5% of operated cases of popliteal artery aneurysms (PAA). Many patients present with unilateral leg pain and swelling, therefore often get referred through a variety of pathways, such as deep venous thrombosis (DVT) clinic. We aim to evaluate the relationship between the initial diagnosis pathway of rPAA and its influence on outcomes, including limb loss and mortality. METHODS: Patients who were referred to vascular surgery and had a final diagnosis of rPAA between 2007 and 2023 were reviewed. Data related

Arthroscopic repair of chronic capsular defect after popliteal cystectomy.

We present an arthroscopic repair technique (all inside suture) for chronic capsular defect of posterolateral space of knee joint developed after previous popliteal cystectomy. We use a transseptal posteromedial viewing portal, and two posterolateral working portals. This procedure can be an alternative to an open repair technique for a posterior capsular defect after open cystectomy.

Posterior tibial neuropathy from ruptured Baker's cyst.

OBJECTIVES: To increase awareness of entrapment neuropathy caused by rupture of Baker's cyst. METHODS: A patient with psoriatic arthritis, ruptured Baker's cyst, and entrapment neuropathy is reported and the literature on this complication is reviewed. RESULTS: Nerve entrapment caused by rupture of Baker's cyst is rare. Neurological examination and demonstration of Baker's cyst by Color Doppler Duplex Ultrasound (CDDU) help in making the diagnosis. Nerve Conduction Study (NCS) may confirm the diagnosis of posterior tibial nerve entrapment. CONCLUSIONS: Peripheral nerve entrapment should be

Adventitial cystic disease of the radial artery--two case reports and a review.

A 29-year-old female presented with pain and a palpable mass in the left wrist. Imaging demonstrated a multiloculated cystic mass adjacent to the radial aspect of the scaphoid, which was intimately associated with and appeared to arise from the wall of the radial artery and its dorsal branch. The mass was surgically resected. The histological analysis confirmed the presence of adventitial cystic disease (ACD) of the radial artery. In addition, within a year time span, a second 34-year-old male patient presented with a palpable mass in the right hand. Imaging demonstrated a cystic mass encasing

Influence of negative ultrasound findings on the management of in- and outpatients with suspected deep-vein thrombosis.

Real-time ultrasonography (US) was used as a single non-invasive method in the management of 174 patients (56 inpatients and 118 outpatients) with suspected deep-vein thrombosis (DVT). Therapeutic decisions were based on the results of ultrasonography alone. If the US examination was abnormal anticoagulant treatment was started. If the initial US examination was normal, no treatment was given and the patient underwent repeated testing and physical examination after 1 day, 7 days and 3 months. In the outpatient group, 1.3% of the ultrasonographic negative patients developed thromboembolic compl
