Spatial-temporal interactions in the human brain.

The review summarises current evidence on the cognitive mechanisms for the integration of spatial and temporal representations and of common brain structures to process the where and when of stimuli. Psychophysical experiments document the presence of spatially localised distortions of sub-second time intervals and suggest that visual events are timed by neural mechanisms that are spatially selective. On the other hand, experiments with supra-second intervals suggest that time could be represented on a mental time-line ordered from left-to-right, similar to what is reported for other ordered q

Evoked-response forward-masking functions in chinchillas with noise-induced permanent hearing loss.

Evoked-response forward-masking functions were measured by chronic electrodes in the inferior colliculus of the chinchilla before and after exposure to an intense tone that produced a permanent hearing loss. Before exposure, the forward-masking time constants ranged from 50 to 90 ms. After exposure, the forward-masking time constants increased significantly in the region of hearing loss, but not in regions where hearing was normal. The effect of the hearing loss on the time course of forward masking was most pronounced once the hearing loss exceeded 20-25 dB. These physiological changes in the

Blue (S) cone pathway vulnerability: a test of a fragile receptor hypothesis.

The vulnerability of the blue (S) cone pathways to retinal disease has been attributed by some to S (blue) receptors, which are said to be more susceptible to metabolic damage (the fragile receptor hypothesis). Other investigators have suggested postreceptoral causes. To test the fragile receptor hypothesis, a two-site model of the S cone system is presented, and a psychophysical procedure is described. Data from a patient with congenital stationary night blindness (CSNB) and a patient with retinitis pigmentosa (RP) demonstrate the feasibility of this approach. As expected from previous work,

Do blind people hear better?

For centuries, anecdotal evidence such as the perfect pitch of the blind piano tuner or blind musician has supported the notion that individuals who have lost their sight early in life have superior hearing abilities compared with sighted people. Recently, auditory psychophysical and functional imaging studies have identified that specific auditory enhancements in the early blind can be linked to activation in extrastriate visual cortex, suggesting crossmodal plasticity. Furthermore, the nature of the sensory reorganization in occipital cortex supports the concept of a task-based functional ca

Birthing Consciousness as a Case of Adaptive Altered State of Consciousness Associated With Transient Hypofrontality.

In this article, I present the concept of "birthing consciousness," a psychophysical altered state of women that can occur during natural and undisturbed birth. I demonstrate that this altered state of consciousness (ASC) has phenomenological and cognitive features of hypofrontality; thus, birthing consciousness probably shares a similar brain mechanism to that postulated by the transient-hypofrontality theory (THT). I argue that until recently (with the advent of modern medical intervention), in evolutionary terms, women lacking the proclivity for this specific brain mechanism had a lower cha

Biomarkers in Temporomandibular Disorder and Trigeminal Neuralgia: A Conceptual Framework for Understanding Chronic Pain.

In this review, we will explore the use of biomarkers in chronic pain, using the examples of two prototypical facial pain conditions: trigeminal neuralgia and temporomandibular disorder. We will discuss the main categories of biomarkers and identify various genetic/genomic, molecular, neuroradiological, and psychophysical biomarkers in both facial pain conditions, using them to compare and contrast features of neuropathic, non-neuropathic, and mixed pain. By using two distinct model facial pain conditions to explore pain biomarkers, we aim to familiarize readers with different types of biomark

[Not Available].

Small fiber neuropathies (SFN) comprise a clinical syndrome typically associated with acral burning pain, where the pathophysiological processes affect the thinly myelinated A-delta and the unmyelinated C nerve fibers. Neurological examination thus reveals merely thermal sensory deficits. Nerve conduction studies in SFN are normal to marginally abnormal. To underpin suspicion of SFN, special psychophysical and neurophysiological examinations or a skin punch biopsy are needed. The search for the etiology of SFN is crucial and most frequently reveals diabetes mellitus or impaired glucose toleran

Significance of Visual Evoked Potentials in the Assessment of Visual Field Defects in Primary Open-Angle Glaucoma: A Review.

Visual evoked potentials is an important visual electrophysiological tool which has been used for the evaluation of visual field defects in primary open-angle glaucoma and is an appropriate objective measure of optic nerve function. Significant correlations between the magnitude of the VEP parameters and MD of Humphrey static perimetry suggest that the impaired visual cortical responses observed in glaucoma patients can be revealed by both electrophysiological and psychophysical methods. In addition, the severity of global glaucomatous damage evidenced by reduction in MD could depend on the de

Audiometric characteristics of USH2a patients.

Temporal processing, frequency discrimination and frequency resolution, three basic mechanisms involved in speech perception, were studied in 11 USH2a patients from 10 Dutch families. Measurements included loudness scaling, gap detection, determination of auditory filter shapes and difference limen for frequency. The results were compared to values obtained from listeners with normal hearing, DFNA8/12 patients, DFNA13 patients and unselected patients with presbyacusis. Overall, the results for USH2a were most similar to those obtained in patients with sensorineural hearing loss caused by hair

Reactivity to visual signals and the cerebellar vermis: Evidence from a rare case with rhombencephalosynapsis.

The modulatory role of the cerebellum was investigated in a case with rhombencephalosynapsis (RS), a rare dysplasia characterized by the absence of the cerebellar vermis. The visual psychophysical task involved localizing a target and ignoring a distractor appearing either before, at the same time as, or after the target. It allowed us to assess reactivity to warning signals, distraction, and reactivity to signals appearing during attentive processing. Compared with a control sample, the patient exhibited greater reactivity to warning signals and difficulties interrupting attentive processing,

Can spatial and temporal motion integration compensate for deficits in local motion mechanisms?

We studied the motion perception of a patient, AMG, who had a lesion in the left occipital lobe centered on visual areas V3 and V3A, with involvement of underlying white matter. As shown by a variety of psychophysical tests involving her perception of motion, the patient was impaired at motion discriminations that involved the detection of small displacements of random-dot displays, including local speed discrimination. However, she was unimpaired on tests that required spatial and temporal integration of moving displays, such as motion coherence. The results indicate that she had a specific i

Visual function, fatty acids and dyslexia.

There is mounting evidence that developmental dyslexia is a neurodevelopmental disorder which involves abnormalities of fatty acid metabolism, particularly with respect to certain long-chain highly unsaturated fatty acids (HUFAs). Psychophysical evidence also strongly suggests that dyslexics may have visual deficits as well as phonological problems. Specifically, these visual deficits appear to be related to the magnocellular pathway, which is specialized for processing fast, rapidly-changing information about the visual scene. It remains unclear how these two aspects of dyslexia - fatty acid

Where is my arm? The relative role of vision and proprioception in the neuronal representation of limb position.

A central problem in motor control, in the representation of space, and in the perception of body schema is how the brain encodes the relative positions of body parts. According to psychophysical studies, this sense of limb position depends heavily on vision. However, almost nothing is currently known about how the brain uses vision to determine or represent the location of the arm or any other body part. The present experiment shows that the position of the arm is represented in the premotor cortex of the monkey (Macaca fascicularis) brain by means of a convergence of visual cues and proprioc

[Recurrent hypersomnia].

The recurrent hypersomnia is a rare disorder and diagnosed by recurrent episodes of hypersomnia more than 18 hours a day lasting from several days to several weeks. The Kleine-Levin syndrome is a subtype of the recurrent hypersomnia and characterized by excessive eating or hypersexuality. I review the clinical features of recurrent hypersomnia comparing with our own two cases. The slight consciousness disturbance is seemed to cause the hypersomnic state. Several neurophysiological findings also support this hypothesis. Generally, the prognosis of this disorder is good. The psychophysical facto

Linkage analysis in a family with complete type congenital stationary night blindness with and without myopia.

A family is described with X-linked congenital stationary night blindness of the complete type (CSNB1) in which clinical variation between affected males resulted in diagnostic difficulties. In two affected male cousins, one had congenital nystagmus and myopia, while the other was initially thought to have retinitis pigmentosa with optic atrophy and was hyperopic. The diagnosis of X-linked congenital stationary night blindness was established by clinical, psychophysical and electrophysiological criteria, and DNA markers flanking the CSNB1 locus were analysed in the family. The results show tha

Grating test of contrast sensitivity in patients with retrobulbar neuritis.

A retrospective study of 57 patients with retrobulbar neuritis (RBN) was carried out with a new test of contrast sensitivity that utilizes printed sinusoidal gratings. For 21 patients suffering from multiple sclerosis, visual abnormality was detected in 18 "affected" eyes and 12 apparently unaffected eyes. For the 36 patients with RBN, abnormalities were detected in 29. In seven of these cases, the grating test showed bilateral impairment. The grating test seemed to be a more sensitive indicator of demyellinization than other psychophysical tests. In 24 of the patients with the least severe di

Retinal receptive field-like properties and Stiles-Crawford effect in a patient with a traumatic choroidal rupture.

Simple psychophysical techniques were used in order to assess layer-by-layer retinal functions in a patient with sub-retinal fluid due to a choroidal rupture following ocular trauma. A substained-like and a transient-like function believed to reflect retinal receptive-field-like properties, and an indicator of retinal receptor orientation (the Stiles-Crawford effect) have been followed in time. Central visual acuity was also measured. Initially all measured functions provided anomalous responses in affected retinal areas. Of interest here is the nature and order of recovery of the measured res

Driving under influence of nitrous oxide - a case series.

OBJECTIVE: The increasing recreational use of nitrous oxide (N2O) is also evident on the roads. Since there is very little data on driving under the influence of N2O, this study aimed to characterize traffic-related N2O cases in Germany by determining its blood concentrations and co-consumption of other substances as well as assessing documented driving behavior and psychophysical impairment. Fourty-four positive blood samples from traffic cases with suspicion of driving under the influence of N2O, as well as the documents enclosed, including police and medical reports, were evaluated. Experimentally induced pain and paresthesia respond differently to parameter changes of cuff-based compression in pain-free young individuals.

Neuropathic pain is a significant therapeutic challenge due to the co-occurrence with other neurological symptoms such as paresthesia. Human-based models such as cuff algometry can enhance our understanding of pain-paresthesia relationships. This experiment aimed to characterize (psychophysically) pain and paresthesia evoked by stimuli of different temporal and intensity parameters and to demonstrate the reliability of experimental induction of these two symptoms using cuff algometry. Forty participants, aged 18-35, were exposed to mechanical pressure stimuli at three intensities (100, 150, 20

Factors Associated With Persisting Olfactory Dysfunction After COVID-19.

BACKGROUND: Fortunately, the majority of COVID-19 patients recover from olfactory dysfunction (OD) within the first couple of weeks. However, from approximately 5% up to 20% continue to suffer from OD even more than 1 year after the onset. Nonetheless, factors associated with long-lasting OD are hardly known. The aim of this study was to identify favourable and disadvantageous markers of persisting OD in COVID-19 patients. METHODOLOGY: Sixty-six patients (46 female; mean age: 39.9 years) that suffer from OD longer than 6 months due to laboratory-confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection have participate
