BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: To identify patients with oral cancer (OC) who benefit from proton therapy versus photon therapy using a model-based approach (MBA) to reduce late adverse events.
MATERIAL/METHODS: Passive scattering proton beam therapy (PSPT) and volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT) plans were established for 40 patients with OC, consisting of a dose of 70 Gy (relative biological effectiveness) in 35 fractions. In recent years, the exposure of biological systems to various nanomaterials has become an issue of great public concern. Although living organisms have arrays of biological defense mechanisms against exposure to exogenous compounds, the biochemical mechanisms allowing various nanomaterials to enter the body are not well understood. A unique example of a typical mucosal glycoprotein capable of binding and solubilizing nanomaterials in physiological solution is provided, suggesting a possible route for entry into biological systems.

Molecular beam scattering experiments are used to investigate reactions of SO(2) at the surface of a molten alkali carbonate eutectic at 683 K. We find that two-thirds of the SO(2) molecules that thermalize at the surface of the melt are converted to gaseous CO(2) via the reaction SO(2)(g) + CO(3)(2-) --> CO(2)(g) + SO(3)(-2). The CO(2) product is formed from SO(2) in less than 10(-6) s, implying that the reaction takes place in a shallow liquid region less than 100 A deep. We studied 34 low- and 30 high-grade CD10+ B-cell lymphomas. Normally, human erythrocytes display several responses to elevated intracellular calcium levels.
