Effect of incubation temperature on T-agglutination typing of Streptococcus pyogenes.

The temperature of incubation affected the typability of beta-hemolytic group A streptococci by T-agglutination tests. When strains could not be typed after routine incubation at 30 C, they were incubated at 22 to 25 C, and nearly a 10% increase in typability was achieved. The clinical source of the strains was related to their typability. Incubation at the lower temperature was required for successful typing of higher percentages of strains from the skin and other clinical sources than from the throat. Sixty per cent of the skin strains were represented by six serotypes. Of these, 53% of the

OBJECTIVE: Our objective was to determine the tolerance to kangaroo care in the delivery room. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We have studied 651 normal full term newborn infants delivered in our hospital during an 8 month period. Immediately after birth, the newborn infants were dried and placed in skin-to-skin contact between their mother's breasts. They remained in kangaroo care in the delivery room, during transportation to the post-partum area and in their room as long as two hours. The kangaroo care duration, the infant's post-kangaroo care axillary temperature, the mother's and infant's attitud

Non-invasive imaging and clinical skin scores in juvenile localized scleroderma.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate whether in juvenile localized scleroderma (JLS), non-invasive imaging can differentiate affected from non-affected skin and whether imaging correlates with a validated skin score [Localised Scleroderma Cutaneous Assessment Tool (LoSCAT)]. METHODS: A total of 25 children with JLS were recruited into a prospective study and a single 'target' lesion was selected. High-frequency ultrasound (HFUS, measuring skin thickness), infrared thermography (IRT, skin temperature), laser Doppler imaging (LDI, skin blood flow) and multispectral imaging (MSI, oxygenation) were performed …

The contribution of sensory nerves to cutaneous vasodilatation of the forearm and leg to local skin heating.

PURPOSE: The initial cutaneous vasodilatory response to local skin heating is larger in the forearm than the leg. While the initial vasodilatation of the forearm to local heating is primarily dependent on sensory nerves, their role in the leg is unknown. We compared the contribution of sensory nerves in driving the cutaneous vasodilatory response of the forearm and leg to local heating using local anaesthetic (EMLA) cream. METHOD: In seven participants, two skin sites were selected on both the dorsal forearm and anterolateral calf; one site on each region received EMLA, with the other an untr

Effect duration of lumbar sympathetic ganglion neurolysis in patients with complex regional pain syndrome: a prospective observational study.

Lumbar sympathetic ganglion neurolysis (LSGN) has been used for long-term pain relief in patients with complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS). However, the actual effect duration of LSGN has not been accurately measured. This prospective observational study measured the effect duration of LSGN in CRPS patients and investigated the relationship between temperature change and pain relief. After performing LSGN, the skin temperatures of both the maximum pain site and the plantar area in the affected and unaffected limbs were measured by infrared thermography, and pain intensity was assessed before…

Radiofrequency hyperthermia in the palliative treatment of mucinous carcinomatosis of appendiceal origin: optimizing and monitoring heat delivery in western patients.

Mucinous peritoneal carcinomatosis from a primary gastrointestinal malignancy is a lethal condition that has few treatment options with the use of surgery, chemotherapy or radiation therapy. Recent advances in hyperthermia technology and in knowledge of the natural history of this disease has suggested the possible utility of hyperthermia in the application of aggressive local-regional therapy. Radiofrequency (RF) hyperthermia to the whole abdomen, to the hemithorax, or to an isolated mucinous tumour deposit obstructing the gastrointestinal tract was used in patients with disseminated mucinous

Preliminary investigation and comparative assessment of thermo-mechanical performance of PCM-enhanced silicone liners.

Excess heat accumulation and elevated interface pressures cause discomfort and skin complications for transfemoral prosthesis users. This study investigates the thermo-mechanical behavior of silicone liners reinforced with microencapsulated phase change material (PCM) at 5%, 10%, and 15% volume fractions (Si-5PCM, Si-10PCM, Si-15PCM), using a coupled 3D finite element model with multiscale homogenization. Results show the silicone liner reached the highest temperature (∼36°C) and highest coupled contact pressure (183.4 kPa), while Si-15PCM maintained the lowest temperature (∼34.6°C) with small

Investigation of niacin on parameters of metabolism in a physiologic dose: randomized, double-blind clinical trial with three different dosages.

The aim of this double-blind, placebo-controlled cross-over design trial was to assess the safety of a multi-vitamin preparation containing nicotinic acid in a physiological dose. Seventy-two healthy volunteers took part in this trial. At six consecutive time-points, we systematically documented blood pressure, pulse, skin temperature and flushing symptoms after an oral dose of up to 50.1 mg nicotinic acid. The results suggest that nicotinic acid in a dosage of 16.7 mg does not cause flushing symptoms. In higher doses up to 50.1 mg, flushing symptoms are sporadically possible. There was no phy…

Neurophysiology of temperature regulation: problems and perspectives.

The neuronal basis of thermal regulation has been intensively studied. Certain neurons in the hypothalamus and elsewhere are extremely sensitive to changes in local and/or external temperature. Recent in vitro work indicates that membrane potentials rather than synaptic events may be the basis of the local sensitivity. Other central sites outside the central nervous system are also now being recognized as sources of thermal information to the thermoregulatory system. The skin thermal input relays to the nucleus raphe magnus and probably passes from there to the hypothalamus. There is still muc

Neurological complications after 434 MHz microwave hyperthermia of the rat lumbar region including the spinal cord.

Hyperthermia was applied in the region of the vertebral column from the second to the fifth lumbar vertebra using a ring-shaped 434 MHz microwave radiator. In all experiments temperatures were measured at a 'reference' thermocouple which was placed against the fourth lumbar vertebra. After 60 min of heat treatment at 'reference' temperatures of 43.0 degrees C, 44.0 degrees C and 45.0 degrees C (+/- 0.05 degrees C) the average maximal temperature inside the vertebral canal were 42.6 degrees C, 43.0 degrees C and 43.8 degrees C (+/- 0.3 degrees C), respectively. At all 'reference' temperatures t

Comparison of blood pressure and thermal responses in rats exposed to millimeter wave energy or environmental heat.

Electromagnetic fields at millimeter wave lengths are being developed for commercial and military use at power levels that can cause temperature increases in the skin. Previous work suggests that sustained exposure to millimeter waves causes greater heating of skin, leading to faster induction of circulatory failure than exposure to environmental heat (EH). We tested this hypothesis in three separate experiments by comparing temperature changes in skin, subcutis, and colon, and the time to reach circulatory collapse (mean arterial blood pressure, 20 mmHg) in male Sprague-Dawley rats exposed to
