Autonomic Nervous System Dysfunction Is Related to Chronic Prostatitis/Chronic Pelvic Pain Syndrome.

Chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome (CP/CPPS) is a common and non-lethal urological condition with painful symptoms. The complexity of CP/CPPS's pathogenesis and lack of efficient etiological diagnosis results in incomplete treatment and recurrent episodes, causing long-term mental and psychological suffering in patients. Recent findings indicate that the autonomic nervous system involves in CP/CPPS, including sensory, sympathetic, parasympathetic, and central nervous systems. Neuro-inflammation and sensitization of sensory nerves lead to persistent inflammation and pain. Sympathe

[A case of idiopathic orthostatic hypotension manifesting sick sinus syndrome due to sympathetic nervous dysfunction].

A 67-year-old woman with idiopathic orthostatic hypotension was presented. The patient started to experience faintness on standing since 1993. During a physical examination, her systolic blood pressure fell from 148 to 50 mmHg on standing. Blood pressure responses to the mental arithmetic test and hyperventilation stress were normal. However, cold pressor test failed to increase blood pressure. These observations, with the finding that phase IV response on Valsalva's maneuver was absent, indicate afferent sympathetic nervous dysfunction. Peripheral neuropathy including diabetes mellitus and in

The Interaction of Central Nervous System and Acute Kidney Injury: Pathophysiology and Clinical Perspectives.

Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a common disorder in critically ill hospitalized patients. Its main pathological feature is the activation of the sympathetic nervous system and the renin-angiotensin system (RAS). This disease shows a high fatality rate. The reason is that only renal replacement therapy and supportive care can reduce the impact of the disease, but those measures cannot significantly improve the mortality. This review focused on a generalization of the interaction between acute kidney injury and the central nervous system (CNS). It was found that the CNS further contributes to kidn…

Proopiomelanocortin (POMC) products in the central regulation of sympathetic and cardiovascular dynamics: studies on melanocortin and opioid interactions.

The proopiomelanocortin (POMC)-derived peptides are important regulators in a number of central nervous system pathways especially as they relate to food intake as well as metabolic and autonomic responses. In this study, we investigated the sympathetic nervous and cardiovascular responses to intracerebroventricular (i.c.v.) administration of alpha melanocyte stimulating hormone (alphaMSH), beta-endorphin (beta-END) and adrenal corticotrophic hormone (ACTH) alone or in the presence of a melanocortin antagonist, or an opioid antagonist, in normal animals. The i.c.v. administration of alphaMSH a

Upregulation of the Renin-Angiotensin-aldosterone-ouabain system in the brain is the core mechanism in the genesis of all types of hypertension.

Basic research using animal models points to a causal role of the central nervous system in essential hypertension; however, since clinical research is technically difficult to perform, this connection has not been confirmed in humans. Recently, renal nerve ablation in humans proved to continuously decrease blood pressure in resistant hypertension. Furthermore, when electrical stimulation was continuously applied to the carotid baroreceptor nerve of human adults, their blood pressure lowered. These findings promoted the concept that the central nervous system may actually be involved in the pa

Acute stress enhances contact dermatitis by promoting nuclear factor-kappaB DNA-binding activity and interleukin-18 expression in mice.

Psychological stress adversely affects the immune system, and aggravates various skin diseases, such as psoriasis, alopecia areata and atopi … sympathectomy was performed using the neurotoxin 6-hydroxy-dopamine to determine the effect of the sympathetic nervous system. The experiment showed that restraint stress induced a series of changes which include increasing of NF-kappaB DNA-binding activity and IL-18 mRNA expression in spleen lymphocytes and enhancement of contact hypersensitivity response, and these chang …

Clinical manifestations of malfunctioning sympathetic mechanisms in tetraplegia.

Patients who are tetraplegic with cervical spinal cord transection do not appear to have cerebral control over the sympathetic nervous system. Soon after transection they are often in a state of spinal shock during which even isolated spinal cord sympathetic activity is absent. This affects, in particular, the cardiovascular system and other homeostatic mechanisms which are dependent on appropriate regulation of the vasculature, such as thermoregulation. After a few weeks isolated spinal cord activity returns but the absence of control absence of control by the brain results in sympathetic mal…

Trypanosoma cruzi strains and autonomic nervous system pathology in experimental Chagas disease.

Lesions involving the sympathetic (para-vertebral ganglia) and para-sympathetic ganglia of intestines (Auerbach plexus) and heart (right atrial ganglia) were comparatively analyzed in mice infected with either of three different strain types of Trypanosoma cruzi, during acute and chronic infection, in an attempt to understand the influence of parasite strain in causing autonomic nervous system pathology. Ganglionar involvement with neuronal destruction appeared related to inflammation, which most of the times extended from neighboring adipose and cardiac, smooth and striated muscular tissues.

Single-unit sympathetic discharge pattern in pathological conditions associated with elevated cardiovascular risk.

1. Although measuring the rate of firing of multi-unit muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA) has provided important information in many aspects of cardiovascular medicine, measuring single-unit vasoconstrictor activity provides a better understanding of the possible mechanisms underlying disturbed sympathetic nervous system activity. 2. Detailed firing patterns of sympathetic vasoconstrictor neurons have been recorded in conditions associated with sympathoexcitation such as heart failure, obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome, hypertension and obesity; conditions in which cardiovascular morbidi…

Electrophysiological responses of sympathetic preganglionic neurons to ANG II and aldosterone.

The intermediolateral cell column (IML) of the spinal cord is an important area where sympathetic impulses propagate to peripheral sympathetic organs. ANG II and aldosterone are important components of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS), which activate the sympathetic nervous system. Each is partly synthesized in the brain and plays a paracrine role in the regulation of blood pressure independently of RAAS in the periphery. Our purpose in the present study was to clarify the contributions of sympathetic preganglionic neurons in the IML (IML neurons) and the effects of ANG II and a…

Autonomic reactivity in relation to attachment and early adversity among foster children.

This study examined whether the quality of relationships with foster caregivers was associated with autonomic nervous system reactivity of children during separation and reunion with their foster caregiver. Moreover, effects of early adversity were examined in relation to attachment and autonomic nervous system reactivity. The sample included 60 children between 26 and 88 months of age, who participated with their primary foster caregivers in the Strange Situation. Respiratory sinus arrhythmia and preejection period were measured as indicators of parasympathetic and sympathetic nervous system …

Single-unit analysis of sympathetic nervous discharges in patients with panic disorder.

Patients with panic disorder are at increased cardiac risk. While the mechanisms responsible remain unknown, activation of the sympathetic nervous system may be implicated. Using isotope dilution methodology, investigations of whole-body and regional sympathetic nervous activity have failed to show any differences between patients with panic disorder and healthy subjects. Using direct recording of single unit efferent sympathetic vasoconstrictor nerve activity by microneurography we examined sympathetic nervous function in patients with panic disorder more precisely than previously reported. [Cardiovascular disorders in paraplegic patients].

While the consequences of damage to the sensorimotor nervous system in spinal cord injury are obvious, autonomic dysreflexia often goes unrecognised. Spinal cord injury affecting the cord above the fifth thoracic segment involves interruption of the connection between brain and sympathetic nervous system and, below the level of the lesion, the sacral parasympathetic nervous system. The isolated spinal cord continues to function, except for the directly damaged segment, but there is no central control. The autonomic nervous system below the level of the lesion can trigger severe reactions from …

Sensitization of Hypertension: The Impact of Earlier Life Challenges: Excellence Award for Hypertension Research 2021.

Hypertension affects over 1 billion individuals worldwide. Because the cause of hypertension is known only in a small fraction of patients, most individuals with high blood pressure are diagnosed as having essential hypertension. Elevated sympathetic nervous system activity has been identified in a large portion of hypertensive patients. However, the root cause for this sympathetic overdrive is unknown. A more complete understanding of the breadth of the functional capabilities of the sympathetic nervous system may lead to new insights into the cause of essential hypertension. By employing a u…

Decreased liberation of noradrenaline from the heart following cold crystalloid cardioplegia.

Exogenous catecholamine support is often needed soon after termination of cardiopulmonary bypass even when appropriate cardioplegia has been used. To study the effect of hypothermic cardioplegic ischemia and reperfusion on the activity of the cardiac sympathetic nervous system, plasma noradrenaline concentration in the coronary sinus and general circulation was measured in six patients undergoing valve replacement for nonischemic mitral disease. Before cardiopulmonary bypass and cardioplegia the release of noradrenaline from the heart was greater than the mean systemic release. After ischemia,…

[Leptin and beta-blockers in bone metabolism].

It has been shown that leptin, initially discovered as an anorexigenic hormone, exerts various biological effects. We demonstrated that leptin negatively regulates bone formation via the neuronal network composed of central nervous system and sympathetic nervous system. Administration of beta-blockers in mice led to an increase in bone mass. Moreover, recent report showing that beta-blockers reduce the risk of fracture suggests their therapeutic application for osteoporosis.
