Posttraumatic stress disorder and extent of trauma exposure as correlates of medical problems and perceived health among women with childhood abuse.

This study examined the relative contributions of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) symptoms and the extent of trauma exposure as factors contributing to the current health status of childhood abuse survivors. Sixty-seven women with a history of familial childhood abuse (sexual and/or physical) and twenty-nine women with no abuse history were assessed on two distinct aspects of health status: reported number of medical problems and perceptions of overall health. Women with abuse were found to have a greater number of medical problems and poorer perceived physical well-being than the no abus

Clinical diagnosis of trauma from occlusion and its relation with severity of periodontitis.

The purpose of the present study was to determine the reliability of several selected signs of trauma from occlusion and their relations with severity of periodontitis. 32 moderate to advanced chronic periodontitis patients participated in the study. All teeth present were evaluated for various abnormal occlusal contacts, signs of trauma from occlusion, and the severity of periodontitis. Standardized periapical radiographs were also taken for each tooth. The results demonstrated that: (1) no significant difference occurred in probing pocket depth (PD), clinical attachment loss (AL), or percent

Helmets Matter: Kentucky Motorcycle Crash Victims Seen at a Tennessee Trauma Center.

OBJECTIVES: Motorcycle helmet laws vary by state, with Kentucky requiring helmets only for younger riders. We hypothesized that motorcyclists injured in Kentucky and seen at a Tennessee trauma center would be more likely to be unhelmeted, have more severe head injuries, and sustain more fatal injuries than those injured in Tennessee or Virginia. METHODS: A Trauma Registry review of 729 injured motorcyclists from January 2005 through June 2015 examined state location of crash, demographics, helmet use, and clinical outcomes. Multivariate logistic regression analysis evaluated predictors for he

Systemic inflammation and grey matter volume in schizophrenia and bipolar disorder: Moderation by childhood trauma severity.

BACKGROUND: Elevated levels of systemic inflammation are consistently reported in both schizophrenia (SZ) and bipolar-I disorder (BD), and are associated with childhood trauma exposure. We tested whether childhood trauma exposure moderates associations between systemic inflammation and brain morphology in people with these diagnoses. METHODS: Participants were 55 SZ cases, 52 BD cases and 59 healthy controls (HC) who underwent magnetic resonance imaging. Systemic inflammation was measured using a composite z-score derived from serum concentrations of interleukin 6, tumor necrosis factor alpha

A prospective evaluation of the clinical utility of the lower-extremity injury-severity scores.

BACKGROUND: High-energy trauma to the lower extremity presents challenges with regard to reconstruction and rehabilitation. Failed efforts at limb salvage are associated with increased patient mortality and high hospital costs. Lower-extremity injury-severity scoring systems were developed to assist the surgical team with the initial decision to amputate or salvage a limb. The purpose of the present study was to prospectively evaluate the clinical utility of five lower-extremity injury-severity scoring systems. METHODS: Five hundred and fifty-six high-energy lower-extremity injuries were pros

Incidence of blunt cerebrovascular injury in low-risk cervical spine fractures.

BACKGROUND: It has been suggested that specific cervical spine fractures (CSfx) (location at upper cervical spine [CS], subluxation, or involvement of the transverse foramen) are predictive of blunt cerebrovascular injury (BCVI). We sought to determine the incidence of BCVI with CSfx in the absence of high-risk injury patterns. METHODS: We performed a retrospective study in patients with CSfx who underwent evaluation for BCVI. The presence of recognized CS risk factors for BCVI and other risk factors (Glasgow coma score ≤ 8, skull-based fracture, complex facial fractures, soft-tissue neck inj

Critical incident history questionnaire replication: frequency and severity of trauma exposure among officers from small and midsize police agencies.

Frequency and severity of trauma exposure are thought to influence posttraumatic reactions. Weiss et al.'s Critical Incident History Questionnaire (CIHQ; 2010) measures these variables among law enforcement officers; they reported findings using a sample of officers from large urban departments. We noted the need for replication studies utilizing samples from smaller and rural police agencies. The purpose of this study was to replicate the CIHQ findings from Weiss et al. using a sample (N = 193) of officers from small and midsize police departments and officers whose duties include policing ru

Identifying factors affecting crash injury severity of pillion riders using interpretable machine learning techniques.

In India, motorized two-wheeler (TW) riders account for 44.5% of fatal road crashes. While factors affecting drivers have been studied, research on pillion riders' injury severity remains limited. The study aims to identify factors causing severe injuries to pillion riders by developing an accurate prediction model. The study includes machine learning (ML) models, such as conditional inference tree, random forest (RF), gradient boosting, support vector machine, and a statistical model ordered probit for comparison. The study accounts for the imbalance in injury severity crash data by adopting

Light-based methods for predicting circadian phase in delayed sleep-wake phase disorder.

Methods for predicting circadian phase have been developed for healthy individuals. It is unknown whether these methods generalize to clinical populations, such as delayed sleep-wake phase disorder (DSWPD), where circadian timing is associated with functional outcomes. This study evaluated two methods for predicting dim light melatonin onset (DLMO) in 154 DSWPD patients using ~ 7 days of sleep-wake and light data: a dynamic model and a statistical model. The dynamic model has been validated in healthy individuals under both laboratory and field conditions. The statistical model was developed f

Management of a Rare Case With Severe Hydrofluoric Acid Burns: Important Roles of Neutralizers and Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy.

Hydrofluoric acid (HF), a dangerous inorganic acid, is widely used in various industries and in daily life. Chemical burns caused by HF exposure occur more frequently in some regions worldwide. It has been reported that some cases with HF burns can be lethal due to the hypertoxicity of HF. In this article, we present a case of a 24-year-old worker who suffered HF burns by 53% HF solution to his face, neck, and nasal cavity. This patient quickly developed electrolyte disturbance, that is, hypocalcemia, and hypopotassemia, and myocardial injury after exposure. Multiple measures had been taken to

Psychotic experiences in the context of depression: The cumulative role of victimization.

Previous studies have reported an association between depression and psychotic experiences, but little is known about what drives this co-occurrence. This study tests the hypothesis that exposure to trauma and bullying may strengthen the relation between depression and psychotic experiences. A total of 799 college students completed self-report questionnaires on psychotic experiences, depression, bullying, and sexual trauma. Hierarchical linear regression analyses were conducted to test the direct relationship between depression and psychotic experiences, as well as interactions. Approximately
