Change in appendicular lean mass in patients established on peritoneal dialysis as measured by dual x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) scanning.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients are at increased risk of malnutrition and cachexia, definitions of which include weight loss. However, PD patients can absorb glucose from the dialysate and loss of muscle mass may be overlooked by fat weight gain. As such, we wished to review changes in body composition in prevalent PD patients. SUBJECTS/METHODS: We compared changes in body composition measured by dual x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) in adult PD patients, and calculated glucose absorption based on 24-h collections of PD dialysate. RESULTS: Overall, 73 prevalent PD patients

Dietary exposure to low doses of bisphenol A: effects on reproduction and development in two generations of C57BL/6J mice.

The present study was conducted to examine the effects of low-dose exposure to bisphenol A on reproduction and development in two generations of mice. Pregnant female C57BL/6J mice (F(0)) were fed a diet containing low doses of bisphenol A (0, 0.33, 3.3, or 33 ppm) from gestational day 6 through postnatal day 22, and the weanlings (F(1) and F(2)) from each F(0) and F(1) dam group, respectively, were also fed these same concentrations of bisphenol A ad libitum until sacrifice. There were no treatment-related changes in body weight, body weight gain, food consumption, gestation length, or the nu

Interpregnancy weight change: associations with severe maternal morbidity and neonatal outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Prepregnancy body mass index and gestational weight gain have been linked with severe maternal morbidity, suggesting that weight change between pregnancies may also play a role, as it does for neonatal outcomes. OBJECTIVE: This study assessed the association of changes in prepregnancy body mass index between 2 consecutive singleton pregnancies with the outcomes of severe maternal morbidity, stillbirth, and small- and large-for-gestational-age infants in the subsequent pregnancy. STUDY DESIGN: This observational study was based on birth records from 1,111,032 consecutive pregnanci

Ghrelin and Helicobacter pylori infection.

Ghrelin is primarily secreted from the stomach and has been implicated in the coordination of eating behavior and weight regulation. Ghrelin also plays an essential role in the mechanism of gastric mucosal defense. Thus, it is important to clarify which diseases primarily influence changes in plasma ghrelin concentrations. Helicobacter pylori (H pylori) infection is involved in the pathogenesis of gastritis, gastric and duodenal ulcer, gastric carcinoma, and mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue lymphoma. H pylori eradication is related to body weight change. Compared, H pylori infected and negati

Rumination in anorexia nervosa: Cognitive-affective and neuroendocrinological aspects.

Rumination about body weight/figure as well as food is common in patients with Anorexia Nervosa (AN) and may be a maintenance factor of the disorder. While rumination can generally be considered as a cognitive-affective process, food-related rumination may be driven primarily by a physiological response to undernutrition. In the current longitudinal study, we integrate ecological momentary assessment of rumination and affect and, as a biological marker of undernutrition, plasma leptin levels collected from 33 AN patients. At the very acute stage and again after short-term weight-restoration pa

Analysis of dose distribution reproducibility based on a fluence map of in vivo transit dose using an electronic portal imaging device.

Morphological changes can affect distribution of dose in patients. Determination of the dose distribution changes for each fraction radiotherapy can be done by relativein vivodosimetry (IVD). This study analysed the distribution of doses per fraction based on the fluence map recorded by the electronic portal imaging device (EPID) of the patient's transit dose. This research examined cases involving the cervix, breast, and nasopharynx. Transit dose analysis was performed by calculating the gamma index (GI) with composite and field-by-field methods. The gamma passing rate (GPR) value was assesse

Possible involvement of iNOS and TNF-α in nutritional intervention against nicotine-induced pancreatic islet cell damage.

Nicotine is the more abundant and most significant components of cigarette smoke. Epidemiological evidence strongly suggests an association between cigarette smoking and pancreatic injury. Although effects of smoking on endocrine pancreas are still controversial Here, we examined the impact and underlying mechanisms of action of folic acid and vitamin B12 on nicotine induced damage in pancreatic islets of rats. Male Wistar rats were treated with nicotine (3mg/kg body weight/day, intraperitonealy) with or without folic acid (36μg/kg body weight/day, orally) and vitamin B12 (0.63μg/kg body weigh

Association of body composition trajectories with changes in cognitive performance in the Look AHEAD study.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to investigate the longitudinal association of total body fat and appendicular lean mass (ALM), as well as sarcopenia, with cognitive decline after weight loss intervention. METHODS: Among 972 Look AHEAD-MIND participants with type 2 diabetes and overweight or obesity, we investigated the longitudinal association of dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry body composition trajectories with cognitive change. We identified three latent trajectories each for total body fat and ALM. Mixed linear regression models were adjusted for the following: repeated measur

Subchronic Oral Toxicity of Sodium Tungstate in Sprague-Dawley Rats.

The subchronic toxicity of sodium tungstate dihydrate aqueous solution in male and female Sprague-Dawley rats was evaluated by daily oral gavage of 0, 10, 75, 125, or 200 mg/kg/d for 90 days. Measured parameters included food consumption, body weight measurements, hematology, clinical chemistry, and histopathological changes. There was a significant decrease in food consumption and body weight gain in males at 200 mg/kg/d from days 77 to 90; however, there was no effect in food consumption and body weights in females. There were no changes in the hematological and clinical parameters studied.

Effects of CPAP on body weight in patients with obstructive sleep apnoea: a meta-analysis of randomised trials.

INTRODUCTION: The impact of obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) treatment with CPAP on weight is not clear. This meta-analysis was designed to assess whether OSA treatment with CPAP promotes changes in body mass index (BMI) and weight. METHODS: We searched PubMed, SCOPUS and Cochrane Central Register electronic databases through 1 October 2013 (including papers in press at that time), without language restrictions. We identified randomised trials of CPAP versus controls with a minimum treatment duration of 4 weeks that objectively measured BMI. Data were independently abstracted and reviewed by tw

Changes in body water compartments with diuretic therapy in infants with chronic lung disease.

The effects of diuretic therapy on body water compartments were studied in preterm infants with chronic lung disease. Gestational age of the infants ranged from 24 to 28 weeks, while the median postnatal age at the time of study was 40 days. Infants were randomized to receive furosemide (1.0 mg/kg/day) alone (n = 5) or combined with metolazone (0.2 mg/kg/day, n = 7) for 4 consecutive days. Treatment in both groups produced a significant decrease (P < 0.05) in extracellular water (ECW) without changes in plasma volume, total body water or body weight. The decrease in ECW with furosemide (503 +/

A Requiem for a Standardized Calculation of Ideal Body Weight in Chronic Kidney Disease?

Defining a patient's body weight in order to calculate their protein and energy prescription is an important step for physicians and dietitians working in the field of kidney diseases. Ideal body weight embraces 2 concepts. It is defined both as "the goal weight at which nutritional requirements are met" and "the body weight associated with the lowest mortality for a given height, age, gender, and frame size". Both definitions are not generalizable to people living with chronic kidney disease (CKD), and there is no agreed method for how to define ideal body weight in CKD. The epidemiology of C

The obesity paradox: A further consideration in dialysis patients.

Several epidemiological cohorts have demonstrated that higher body mass index (BMI) is associated with lower mortality risk among patients receiving hemodialysis. However, BMI may be an inaccurate indicator of nutritional status among dialysis patients because it does not differentiate between muscle and fat mass or provide information about body fat distribution. More sophisticated methods of body composition analysis are therefore required to address the question of which component is associated with greater survival. Recent evidence has also shown that changes in body weight and body compos

Association between body image dissatisfaction and weight loss among patients with advanced cancer and their caregivers: a preliminary report.

CONTEXT: No prospective studies have dealt with the impact of cachexia-related weight loss on patients' body image as well as the impact of patients' body image changes on the level of patient and family distress. OBJECTIVES: Our aim was to examine associations between body mass index (BMI), weight loss, symptom distress, and body image for patients with advanced cancer and their caregivers. METHODS: Outpatients with advanced cancer and different levels of BMI, along with their caregivers, were recruited. Patient assessments included BMI, precancer weight, Body Image Scale (BIS; 0-30), Edmon

Changes in Ultra-Processed Food Intake During a Single-Arm Behavioral Weight Management Intervention: A Secondary Analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Increasing evidence links ultra-processed food (UPF) intake to obesity and related diseases; however, little is known about the role of UPF in behavioral weight-loss interventions (BWLIs). Thus, the current study investigated whether UPF intake changes during a BWLI and whether these changes are associated with weight-loss outcomes. METHODS: A total of 449 adults with obesity (mean ± SD age = 49.5 ± 11.4 years, BMI = 35.7 ± 4.0 kg/m2, 83.5% female, 23.4% Black/African American, 9.8% Hispanic) completed a 16-week BWLI. Effects of modified alternate-day fasting regimens on adipocyte size, triglyceride metabolism, and plasma adiponectin levels in mice.

Calorie restriction (CR) affects adipocyte function and reduces body weight. However, the effects of alternate-day fasting (ADF) on adipose biology remain unclear. This study examined the effects of ADF and modified ADF regimens on adipocyte size, triglyceride (TG) metabolism, and adiponectin levels in relation to changes in body weight and adipose mass. Twenty-four male C57BL/6J mice were randomized for 4 weeks among 1) ADF-25% (25% CR on fast day, ad libitum on alternate day), 2) ADF-50% (50% CR on fast day), 3) ADF-100% (100% CR on fast day), and 4) control (ad libitum). Parsing the craniofacial phenotype: effect of weight change in an obstructive sleep apnoea population.

PURPOSE: Craniofacial structure is an important risk factor in the development of obstructive sleep apnoea. Most craniofacial imaging methods are not feasible for large-scale studies or the clinic. Craniofacial photography is a high-throughput technique for facial phenotyping; however, derived measurements are a composite of skeletal and soft tissue craniofacial information. Weight change is a paradigm to help determine which facial measurements most relate to regional soft tissue (i.e. change with weight) versus skeletal structure (i.e. stable with weight changes). We aimed to assess the asso

Correlates of weight-related quality of life among individuals with binge eating disorder before and after cognitive behavioral therapy.

Individuals with obesity and binge eating disorder (BED) report poorer weight-related quality of life (WRQOL) compared to individuals with obesity alone. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), the best available treatment for BED, does not consistently produce weight loss or improvements in weight QOL. The purpose of the current study was to examine baseline and longitudinal associations between eating-related and psychosocial variables and dimensions of weight QOL. We examined associations between predictor variables, including body mass index (BMI), eating disorder (ED) psychopathology, and psy
