Champy plates in mandibular surgery.

Champy plates are becoming more and more accepted for the fixation of simple mandibular fractures, fixation of middle face fractures and fixation after Le Fort osteotomies. This area of indication can be extended by their use in cases of complicated mandibular fractures, fixation of bone graft, and immediate reconstruction following removal of mandibular tumours. Experience shows that Champy plates have the following advantages over other methods: the plates are small, flexible, easily adaptable and the monocortical screws allow a rapid surgical application. Some examples are presented.

A novel pilot animal model for bone augmentation using osseous shell technique for preclinical in vivo studies.

OBJECTIVES: Bone grafting is commonly used to reconstruct skeletal defects in the craniofacial region. Several bone augmentation models have been developed to evaluate bone formation using novel bone substitute materials. The aim of this study was to evaluate a surgical animal model for establishing a three-dimensional (3D) grafting environment in the animal's mandibular ramus for bone augmentation using the osseous shell technique, as in humans. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Osteological survey of New Zealand white (NZW) rabbit skull (Oryctolagus cuniculus): Initial osteological and imaging surveys

Biomechanical study of a unilocking T-plate system for prophylactic internal fixation of the radial osteocutaneous donor site using the sheep tibia model.

Prophylactic internal fixation (PIF), with a bone plate in either the anterior (over the section defect) or posterior (on intact cortex) position, has substantially reduced the incidence of fracture at the donor site of the radial osteocutaneous free flap. This study uses the sheep tibia model to compare the effectiveness of new T-shaped titanium plates utilising a unilocking screw system with a 3.5 mm steel plate and bicortical screw fixation system commonly applied for PIF. Forty matched pairs of adult sheep tibias were tested in torsion and 4-point bending. An osteotomised bone was signific

Volar Rim Morphology and Plate Congruence in Fragment-Specific Distal Radius Fixation.

BACKGROUND: Fragment-specific fixation of distal radius fractures often requires implants positioned at or beyond the watershed line, which may increase the risk of flexor ultrasound-detected flexor tendon abnormalities. However, tendon conflict may depend not only on plate position but also on how the implant adapts to individual volar rim morphology. This study assessed whether volar rim morphology, classified according to the Dolomites concept, was associated with plate application and ultrasound-detected flexor tendon abnormalities after fragment-specific fixation. We hypothesized that Dol

Implant site development using titanium plate and platelet-rich fibrin for congenitally missed maxillary lateral incisors: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Bone deficiency and soft tissue atrophy in the absence of maxillary lateral incisors are among the most challenging problems for implant clinicians. Autologous bone grafting is the gold standard for bone augmentation, but not without limitations. Platelet-rich fibrin (PRF), a biodegradable autologous biomaterial, has been widely used for bone and soft tissue management. Moreover, titanium plate is an advantageous barrier due to its good space-maintaining ability. However, there is a lack of literature on implant site development using titanium plate and PRF for congenitally missing

Factors Associated with Bone Union Failure After Frozen Autograft Reconstruction in Lower Limb Osteosarcoma.

Background/Objectives: Liquid nitrogen-treated frozen autograft is a biological reconstruction method developed at Kanazawa University for malignant bone tumors. However, nonunion between the treated autograft and host bone remains a complication. In this study, we aimed to identify factors influencing bone union in patients undergoing this procedure for osteosarcoma of long bones in the lower extremities. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed 35 osteosarcoma patients (mean age: 18.0 years) with lower limb long bone tumors treated with frozen autograft between 1999 and 2023. Factors assessed in

Surgical management of proximal splint bone fractures in the horse.

Fractures of Metacarpal and Metatarsal II and IV (the splint bones) were treated in 283 horses over an 11 year period. In 21 cases the proximal portion of the fractured bone was stabilized with metallic implants. One or more cortical bone screws were used in 11 horses, and bone plates were applied in 11 horses. One horse received both treatments. Complications of screw fixation included bone failure, implant failure, radiographic lucency around the screws, and proliferative new bone at the ostectomy site. Only two of the horses treated with screw fixation returned to their intended use. Compli…

Application of the spanning plate concept to frontal orbital advancement: techniques and clinical experience in 60 patients.

Frontal orbital advancement (FOA), is the procedure of choice in treatment of coronal and metopic synostosis. Resorbable plates and screws have been widely accepted for use in pediatric craniofacial surgery, including FOA. We have applied the concept of extended resorbable spanning plates to FOA for metopic, unilateral, and bilateral coronal synostosis in infants and children during a 5-year period. We report on 60 patients, ages 4 to 15 months (mean, 7 months); 28 girls, 32 boys. Follow-up ranged from 12 to 36 months (mean, 24 months). There were no structural failures, no infections, and no

Biomechanical and surface physico-chemical analyses of used osteosynthesis plates and screws--potential for reuse in developing countries?

Reprocessing of single-use devices is an upcoming issue in the Western world, but has been for many years in developing countries. In developing countries, the number of bone fractures due to traffic or industrial accidents is high. Patients often need an osteosynthesis with plates and screws, but most patients, however, cannot afford this because of the costs involved and have to rely on the application of used plates and screws. This study aims to determine whether used plates can be safely reused in another patient from a biomechanical, surface physico-chemical, and biological point-of-view

Fluoroscopic Evaluation of Reduction and Plate Positioning in Proximal Humerus Fractures: A Case-Control Study Comparing CFR-PEEK and Metallic Plates.

OBJECTIVES: Proximal humeral fractures (PHF) are common upper extremity injuries, particularly in older adults. Recently, carbon fiber-reinforced polyetheretherketone (CFR-PEEK) plates have gained popularity in trauma surgery due to their bone-like elasticity, radiolucency, and reduced risk of stress shielding. However, their impact on intraoperative fracture reduction and implant positioning remains unclear. The aim of our study was to assess CFR-PEEK plates' impact on intraoperative fracture reduction and device positioning. METHODS: This retrospective case-control study evaluated PHFs trea

Bone growth and remodelling after fracture.

We used a rabbit model to investigate the mechanism by which the angulation of fractures is corrected in children. We produced a transverse proximal tibial fracture in one leg of 12 eight-week-old New Zealand white rabbits and measured bone alignment and length and the patterns of bone growth and remodelling. The angle between the joint surfaces changed rapidly to correct the alignment of the limb as a result of asymmetrical growth of epiphyseal plates. In an adult with closed plates, the angle between the joint surfaces cannot therefore improve. The angle at the fracture itself showed slow im

A personalized 3D-printed plate for tibiotalocalcaneal arthrodesis: Design, fabrication, biomechanical evaluation and postoperative assessment.

Personalized plates (P-Plates) could provide improved clinical outcomes in joint fusion by enabling perfect geometric matching between irregular bone and implants. However, there is no unified application framework for P-Plates for joint fusion. The objective of this study was to develop such a framework for P-Plates for tibiotalocalcaneal arthrodesis. A patient-specific bone model was constructed based on CT images, and the P-Plate was preliminarily designed to match the bones. Finite element method was used to optimize the stress distribution and to evaluate the biomechanical performance of

[Treatment methods for complications of forearm diaphyses fractures, first stabilized with plates].

A short series 8 patients with complications and failures of forearm shafts fractures treated with screws and plates was analysed. There were 2 pseudoarthroses of ulna, delayed union of radial shafts in 4 cases in which 2 had plates loosening. The additional 2 patients had the refractures of radius shortly after metal removal. The intraoperative investigation presented that main cause of delayed unions and pseudoarthroses was insufficient blood supply to the bony ends due to circulation destruction during plates implantation. All 8 patients had finally obtained union after second stage procedu

Threshold screw insertion torque for carbon fibre-reinforced polyetheretherketone and titanium (Ti-6Al-4V) locking plate constructs.

BACKGROUND: Locking plate constructs are integral to modern fracture fixation, particularly in osteoporotic bone. Carbon-fibre reinforced polyetheretherketone (CFR-PEEK) plates offer a stiffness profile closer to cortical bone than titanium, potentially improving the mechanical environment for healing. However, the optimal insertion torque for locking screws in CFR-PEEK plates is unclear. This study investigated the influence of insertion torque on construct performance in CFR-PEEK plates compared to titanium alloy (Ti-6Al-4V) plates. METHODS: Locking screws (3.5 mm, Ti-6Al-4V) were inserted

Finite element analysis for LCP plates.

The main assumption of modern orthopedics and trauma surgery is to return to full fitness with a short recovery period. Unfortunately, the emergence of lifestyle diseases such as osteoporosis, which is characterized by a decrease in the biological value of bone tissue, a greater number of road accidents and related injuries to the musculoskeletal system, and the increasing expectations of people with degenerative polyarticular changes to remain mobile, have significantly increased the demand for all types of implants and prostheses. Bone fixations pose a serious challenge for doctors, especial

Nonunion of the clavicle treated with plate fixation: a review of forty-seven consecutive cases.

Forty-seven consecutive patients underwent superior plating for clavicular nonunion between 1995 and 2005. This retrospective analysis was performed to assess the efficacy of plate fixation and the need for iliac crest bone grafting. Forty-three patients were treated with pelvic reconstruction plates and four with straight dynamic compression plates. Of the patients, 30 were treated with local bone graft only, 14 with demineralized bone matrix, and 3 with distant autogenous bone graft. Of the fractures, 93% united after a single operation. Of the patients, 69% returned the Disabilities of the

A Simple Pit Assay Protocol to Visualize and Quantify Osteoclastic Resorption In Vitro.

Mature osteoclasts are multinucleated cells that can degrade bone through the secretion of acids and enzymes. They play a crucial role in various diseases (e.g., osteoporosis and bone cancer) and are therefore important objects of research. In vitro, their activity can be analyzed by the formation of resorption pits. In this protocol, we describe a simple pit assay method using calcium phosphate (CaP) coated cell culture plates, which can be easily visualized and quantified. Osteoclast precursors derived from human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) were cultured on the coated plates i
