This paper reports the first systematic study of acoustic signals during social interactions of the Chinese alligator (Alligator sinensis). Sound pressure level (SPL) measurements revealed that Chinese alligators have an elaborate acoustic communication system with both long-distance signal-bellowing-and short-distance signals that include tooting, bubble blowing, hissing, mooing, head slapping and whining. Continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis is a widely used and convenient alternative to haemodialysis in patients with renal failure. Occasionally, a scrotal swelling may develop during this procedure because of fluid passing through a patent processus vaginalis. We present a case report to illustrate the diagnostic use of radionuclide scintigraphy in this group of patients.

In this study, 21 HIV/AIDS cases (18 male, 3 female; age range 17-64 years), followed up in the Department of Infectious Diseases of Uludag University Medical Faculty between 1997-2003 have been analyzed retrospectively, by means of epidemiological, clinical and laboratory aspects. Nineteen (90%) of them were heterosexual, and in 9 cases the diagnosis was coincidental during the blood donations or routine testing. Left ventricular-right atrial (LV-RA) communications are rare intracardiac defects, often congenital in nature and clinically apparent during childhood. Acquired LV-RA shunts are encountered occasionally in the adult population as a result of a defect in the upper portion of the membranous ventricular septum. We describe the clinical and echocardiographic features of an elderly patient with an acquired LV-RA communication in the setting of an aortic composite valve graft and endocarditis. We also review the anatomical features and hemodynamic consequences of such defects.

Surgical treatment of atrial septal defect in patients older than 40 years is a subject of controversy. We compared the outcome in patients medically treated after the age of 40, with the long-term outcome in a similar group of patients after surgical closure. We conclude that surgical closure was superior to medical treatment. According to our results, surgical treatment must be performed as soon as possible, even if the symptoms of the functional status seem to be minimal.

The synaptic output of retinal bipolar cells was monitored by recording light-evoked EPSCs in ganglion cells. Application of (RS)-2-amino-3-(3-hydroxy-5-tert-butyl-4-isoxazolyl (ATPA), a selective agonist at kainate receptors, depolarized amacrine cells and reduced the light-evoked excitatory current (L-EPSC) in ganglion cells. The communication abilities of 49 individuals in the late stage of Alzheimer disease were examined in relation to other markers of late-stage Alzheimer disease (e.g., incontinence and ambulatory ability). Two existing tools used to stage severity of dementia, the Global Deterioration Scale and the Functional Assessment Stages, have represented communication abilities in individuals with late-stage Alzheimer disease to be minimal to nonexistent. The individuals in this sample showed greater communication skills and verbal output than would be predicted by these scales.
