OBJECTIVE: To compare the rate and extent of systemic salicylate absorption following single and multiple applications of two topically applied analgesics, one containing methyl salicylate and the other containing trolamine salicylate.
DESIGN: Two-period, two-treatment, randomized, crossover, multiple-dose study in healthy men and women volunteers.

Rectal treatment with enemas, foams, and suppositories is the most efficient method of delivering an adequate quantity of locally active drugs to the distal colon. In a pilot study carried out by colonoscopy in four patients, it was observed that 4 g 5-ASA in 20 ml foam spread up or beyond the splenic flexure and more extensively than 2 g 5-ASA in 10 ml foam. Over the past three years, high-dose barbiturate therapy has been used in the treatment of 60 patients with head injury (N = 45), encephalitis (N = 8), acute focal cerebral ischemia (stroke, N = 4), and global anoxia secondary to drowning (N = 3). Failure of septation of the interventricular septum (IVS) is the most common congenital heart defect (CHD), but mechanisms for patterning the IVS are largely unknown. Anidulafungin is the newest addition to the antifungal arsenal. It possesses fungicidal activity against Candida spp., including isolates that are azole and polyene resistant. In addition, it is fungistatic against Aspergillus spp. Anidulafungin is unique in that it possesses no clinically relevant drug interactions and does not require dosage adjustment in renal or hepatic impairment. Anidulafungin was well tolerated in clinical trials and its clinical efficacy has been demonstrated in the treatment of candidemia and other forms of candidiasis.

Patients with prostatic adenoma combined with chronic prostatitis were found to have abnormal content of proteins in peripheral blood erythrocytic membrane, erythrocytic sorption, concentration of nitric oxide stable metabolites, endotheline-1 and lipid peroxidation products in blood plasma before and after transurethral resection of the prostate. Different dosage forms of the drug longidase were tested for efficacy in correction of impairment of structural and functional properties of erythrocytes, endothelial dysfunction and lipid peroxidation in the above patients.

The study of two novel drugs for management of both painful and silent myocardial ischemia isosorbide-5-mononitrate (IS-5-MN), efox, and its long-acting variant efox-long demonstrated that both drugs exerted noticeable antianginal effect at maximal concentration in blood. This was achieved by a single dose and course administration. The differences in the effects of the two dosage forms of IS-5-MN on painless ischemia may be explained by limited coronary reserves of anginal patients.

The Authors have done a clinical study on the efficacy of desmopressin (DDAVP) tablets in the treatment of central diabetes insipidus in 13 patients who were previously treated with intranasal DDAVP. A comparison has been made between peroral and intranasal forms of DDAVP measuring the urinary volume and osmolarity daily. The right dosage of DDAVP tablets was between 150 and 600 micrograms/die. The patients showed very good compliance during the 4 weeks of treatment with DDAVP.

Buffered solid dosage forms containing aspirin, magnesium hydroxide, and aluminum hydroxide are blended with acidic ethanol to extract the aspirin and salicylic acid rapidly. The resulting preparation is then immediately injected onto a 4.6 mm x 3 cm 5 micron reverse-phase column. Aspirin and free salicylic acid are determined simultaneously. The run time is less than 2 min. The total time from the initiation of sample extraction to completion of the separation is less than 5 min.
