Flaxseed-based fortification approaches for nutritional and functional improvement of foods.

Imbalanced dietary intake of omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids is increasingly associated with the incidence of chronic metabolic disorders. As the richest plant-based source of alpha-linolenic acid, flaxseed offers an effective strategy to improve the dietary omega-6: omega-3 ratio and thereby support metabolic health. In addition to omega-3 fatty acids, flaxseed is good source of lignans, proteins, micronutrients and mucilage, imparting broad nutritional and functional significance. This review synthesizes recent advances in flaxseed-based fortification strategies and food product development

The effects and underlying mechanisms of medicine and food homologous flowers on the prevention and treatment of related diseases.

The theory of medicine and food homology has a long history in China. Numerous traditional Chinese medicinal could be used as both medicine and food. Many flower medicinal materials also belong to the homology of medicine and food, such as Chrysanthemum morifolium, Lonicera japonica, Crocus sativus, and Lonicera macranthoides. They mainly contain flavonoids, organic acids, terpenoids, and other active ingredients, which have a variety of medicinal values, including anti-inflammatory, anti-tumor, and antioxidant. There are many formulations and functional foods containing these plants in Chines

Food Matrix Effects on Plant-Derived Bioactive Compounds and Micronutrients: Implications for Functional Food Development.

Even though the functional food market has rapidly increased in recent years, the links between bioactive-rich formulations and consumers' health benefit are not fully established, mainly because of insufficient consideration of food matrix effects. This review provides a comprehensive and integrated evaluation of how food matrix properties (structural and physicochemical) affect the bioaccessibility of plant bioactive compounds. Unlike many reviews that focus on a single nutrient approach, we highlight quantitative evidence of how bioaccessibility can be affected by matrix properties, illustr

Contact urticaria with systemic symptoms due to hexylene glycol in a topical corticosteroid: case report and review of hypersensitivity to glycols.

We report a case of severe contact urticaria with systemic involvement resembling an anaphylactic reaction, following the application of a topical corticosteroid. This was caused by hexylene glycol, an excipient in the formulation. Glycols are widely used in cosmetics, foods and topical and systemic drugs. In particular, glycols are present in many topical drugs used by dermatologists. To our knowledge, this is the first case in the literature of a potentially life-threatening immediate-type reaction in the context of a contact urticaria syndrome due to hexylene glycol. The classification of c

Micronutrients in Future Diets: Considerations for Dietary Iron and the Food Matrix Effects on Bioavailability.

Adequate nutrition is an essential contributor to improved health, longevity, and quality of life in the population. The shift toward sustainable, plant-based diets is driving trends for the development and adaptation of more plant-based food ingredients in future diets. With this, nutrient bioavailability, particularly of iron, remains a critical consideration. Iron deficiency remains a global public health challenge, particularly amongst women, pregnant women, and young children. One major contributor to iron deficiency is inadequate dietary iron intakes, but there are other factors that hin

Bacteriophages for the Targeted Control of Foodborne Pathogens.

Foodborne illness is exacerbated by novel and emerging pathotypes, persistent contamination, antimicrobial resistance, an ever-changing environment, and the complexity of food production systems. Sporadic and outbreak events of common foodborne pathogens like Shiga toxigenic E. coli (STEC), Salmonella, Campylobacter, and Listeria monocytogenes are increasingly identified. Methods of controlling human infections linked with food products are essential to improve food safety and public health and to avoid economic losses associated with contaminated food product recalls and litigations. Postbiotics: A Biobased Frontier for Enhancing Food Safety, Functional Foods and Human Health.

Postbiotics are preparations of inanimate microorganisms with or without additionally adding their components that confer a health benefit on the host. Their non-viable nature can provide advantages over live microbial products with respect to processing, storage and formulation. However, safety and functionality remain dependent on the microbial strain, preparation method, composition, dosage and application matrix. This review critically examines current approaches for postbiotic production, mechanisms of biological activity, applications in food safety and functional foods, interactions wit

[Hypothetical link between endometriosis and xenobiotics-associated genetically modified food].

Endometriosis is an oestrogen-dependent inflammatory disease affecting 10 % of reproductive-aged women. Often accompanied by chronic pelvic pain and infertility, endometriosis rigorously interferes with women's quality of life. Although the pathophysiology of endometriosis remains unclear, a growing body of evidence points to the implication of environmental toxicants. Over the last decade, an increase in the incidence of endometriosis has been reported and coincides with the introduction of genetically modified foods in our diet. Even though assessments of genetically modified food risk have

A collagen hydrolysate/milk protein-blend stimulates muscle anabolism equivalently to an isoenergetic milk protein-blend containing a greater quantity of essential amino acids in older men.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Nutritional composition is key for skeletal muscle maintenance into older age. Yet the acute effects of collagen protein blended with other protein sources, in relation to skeletal muscle anabolism, are ill-defined. We investigated human muscle protein synthesis (MPS) responses to a 20 g blend of collagen protein hydrolysate + milk protein (CP+MP, 125 ml) oral nutritional supplement (ONS) vs. 20 g non-blended milk protein source (MP, 200 ml) ONS, in older adults. METHODS: Healthy older men (N = 8, 71±1 y, BMI: 27±1 kg·m-2) underwent a randomized trial of 20 g protein, from

Reduction in Healthcare Utilization With Transition to Peptide-Based Diets in Intolerant Home Enteral Nutrition Patients.

BACKGROUND: Since the introduction of percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy in the 1980s, the prevalence of home enteral nutrition (HEN) support has increased significantly. Despite these increases, many patients are unable to tolerate standard polymeric formulas (SPFs), resulting in significant healthcare resource utilization. Peptide-based diets (PBDs) have emerged as a viable option in SPF-intolerant patients; however, data in the HEN population are lacking. METHODS: Retrospective review of our prospectively maintained HEN database was conducted to assess tolerance, efficacy, and impact on h
