Effects of Constraining Postural Sway During Upper-Limb Precision Aiming Task Practice in Individuals with Stroke.

Individuals post-stroke commonly demonstrate alterations in motor behavior with regard to both task performance and the motor strategies used in pursuit of task goals. We evaluated whether constraining postural sway (motor strategy) during practice would affect upper-limb precision aiming performance (task performance) and postural control adaptations. Adults with stroke stood on a force plate while immersed in a virtual scene displaying an anterior target. Participants aimed to position a virtual laser pointer (via handheld device) in the target. Participants then completed practice trials in

Cerebellar Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation Enhances Motor Learning in a Complex Overhand Throwing Task.

Cerebellar transcranial direct current stimulation (c-tDCS) enhances motor adaptation, skill acquisition, and learning in relatively simple motor tasks. The purpose was to examine the influence of c-tDCS on motor learning in a complex overhand throwing task. Forty-two young adults were randomized to a c-tDCS group or a SHAM group and completed a practice session and a retention session. The practice session involved an overhand throwing task to a small target (6 m away) in a pre-test block, 6 practice blocks, a post-test block, and a retention-test block (24 h later). c-tDCS or SHAM was applie

Examining the Impact of Group Size on the Treatment Intensity of a Tier 2 Mathematics Intervention Within a Systematic Framework of Replication.

Group size and treatment intensity are understudied topics in mathematics intervention research. This study examined whether the treatment intensity and overall intervention effects of an empirically validated Tier 2 mathematics intervention varied between intervention groups with 2:1 and 5:1 student-teacher ratios. Student practice opportunities and the quality of explicit instruction served as treatment intensity metrics. A total of 465 kindergarten students with mathematics difficulties from 136 intervention groups participated. Results suggested comparable performances between the 2:1 and

Combined Imagery/Physical Practice Yields Comparable Benefits to Physical Practice in Snare Drum Performance.

This study explored the effectiveness of combining motor imagery with physical practice in enhancing snare drum performance among trained percussionists. Motor imagery has promoted learning in related contexts such as sport but has yet to be applied in music training. Twenty-eight percussion majors were assigned to either a physical practice group or a combined imagery/physical practice group. Participants performed a novel snare drum excerpt while motion capture measured upper-limb movements prior to and following training. Temporal errors were also computed by comparing note onsets to the id

Reduction in ionizing radiation exposure during minimally invasive anterior plate osteosynthesis of distal radius fracture: Naive versus deliberate practice.

This study aimed to decrease surgeon exposure to ionizing radiation through a new learning technique, "deliberate practice", which consists in improving performance by setting goals with feedback. The hypothesis was that exposure to ionizing radiation during distal radius fracture surgery using the minimally invasive plate osteosynthesis (MIPO) technique decreased faster with "deliberate" practice than with "naïve" practice. Radiographic dosimetry was measured in the first 30 fractures operated on by MIPO by 6 surgeons. The first 3 surgeons operated "naively" (Group 1) and the next 3 according

A pilot study of local anesthesia training using a mixed-reality haptic fidelity model.

PURPOSE/OBJECTIVES: One of the most difficult local anesthetic blocks to master in dentistry is the inferior alveolar nerve block (IANB). Historically, dental students have practiced local anesthesia on one another. At the University of Colorado, these practice sessions have been limited to one required laboratory session. The predictability and confidence of student IANB success have not been high in the past. Therefore, the objective of this study was to investigate the impact of a novel IANB simulator, built on a three dimensional (3D)-printed mixed-reality haptic model, for second-year den

How early is too early? Challenges in ART initiation and engaging in HIV care under Treat All in Rwanda-A qualitative study.

INTRODUCTION: HIV treatment guidelines recommend that all people living with HIV (PLWH) initiate antiretroviral therapy (ART) as soon as possible after diagnosis (Treat All). As Treat All is more widely implemented, an increasing proportion of PLWH are likely to initiate ART when they are asymptomatic, and they may view the relative benefits and risks of ART differently than those initiating at more advanced disease stages. To date, patient perspectives of initiating care under Treat All in sub-Saharan Africa have not been well described. METHODS: From September 2018 to March 2019, we conduct
