Brucellosis is a worldwide zoonosis affecting animal and human health. In the last several decades, much research has been performed to develop safer Brucella vaccines to control the disease mainly in animals. Till now, no effective human vaccine is available. The aim of this paper is to review and discuss the importance of methodologies used to develop Brucella vaccines in pursuing this challenge.

In 1910, Georg Preiser (1876-1913) described five cases of rarifying osteitis. Based on his imaging studies, he diagnosed post-traumatic avascular necrosis (AVN) of the scaphoid without any sign of primary fracture. This was followed by an article in 1911 in which Preiser related his findings to Kienböck's disease and Köhler's disease of the tarsal navicular. Upon searching the literature, we found descriptions and discussions of Preiser's imaging; however, the original images have never been published. We reproduce Preiser's original imaging in this current review. All of these appear to show

External ventricular drainage (EVD) is one of the most commonly performed neurosurgical procedures. It was first performed as early as 1744 by Claude-Nicholas Le Cat. Since then, there have been numerous changes in technique, materials used, indications for the procedure, and safety. The history of EVD is best appreciated in 4 eras of progress: development of the technique (1850-1908), technological advancements (1927-1950), expansion of indications (1960-1995), and accuracy, training, and infection control (1995-present). While EVD was first attempted in the 18th century, it was not until 189…

As a geographically isolated island chain with no native mosquitoes, Hawaii is a model for examining the mechanisms behind insect vector invasions and their subsequent interactions with each other and with human populations. The yellow fever mosquito, Aedes aegypti, and the Asian tiger mosquito, Ae. albopictus, have been responsible for epidemics of dengue in Hawaii. As one of the world's earliest locations to be invaded by both species, Hawaii's history is particularly relevant because both species are currently invading new areas worldwide and are implicated in outbreaks of emergent or reeme…

Although meningitis was not yet known as such, its symptoms have been conceptualized in different ways and many theories about its causes have been formulated in the course of time. Terms like hydrocephalus and brain fever were used for different clinical manifestations of what today would be recognized as meningitis. Pathological-anatomical findings led to the emergence of the clinical entity from several old concepts of disease. Initially, diagnostic means were limited and therapeutic methods did not differ much from those that had been applied for centuries, even far into the nineteenth cen

OBJECT: Despite the increased detection of incidental or small meningiomas, the lesion's natural history is largely unknown.
METHODS: One year or longer of follow-up was conducted in 244 patients with 273 meningiomas managed conservatively by a single surgeon between 2003 and 2008. Data were stratified according to age, sex, tumor location, symptoms, initial tumor diameter, calcification, MR imaging intensity, and edema. Linear tumor growth was defined as a 2-mm or larger increase in the maximum diameter in any direction of the tumor. Volumetric analysis (ImageJ version 1.43) was also conduct…

Various forms of periodontal therapy, including surgery, have been advocated and documented in the dental literature during the last three c … ion in a harmonious environment of health, comfort, and proper function. This article discusses the history of periodontal osseous surgery, including not only the technical issues, but also the conceptual underpinnings of this form of therapeutic intervention. In the 19th century, the effect of mould on bacterial colonies was investigated. In 1921, Alexander Fleming examined systemic fluids and observed some substances called lyzosomes which were capable of dissolving bacteria. In 1928, he discovered that a specific mould species inhibited the development of Staphylococcus bacteria. The species was known as Pencillium notatum and the filtrate was called penicillin. In 1940, Howard Florey and Ernst Chain worked out the industrial production of penicillin. All three researchers were awarded the Nobel Prize in 1945, and since then the era of antibiotic

From Hippocratic medicine through the modern theory of Melzack and Wall, the concept and physiopathology of pain has been developed over the course of time, assuming in some instances a religious or philosophical view and in others a more scientific meaning. People have developed very different words to express pain. The Arabic language has hundreds of words to express pain, while European languages are more limited. Descartes, who first proposed a link between peripheral sensation and the brain, suggested that sensations stimulated in the body are conveyed directly to the brain, where they ar

The human hookworms Necator americanus and Ancylostoma duodenale remain among the most common infections of humans in areas of rural poverty in the developing regions of the world, with an estimated 1 billion people infected with one or more of these parasites. Herein, we review the nearly 100 years of research, development, animal testing, and fieldwork that have led to our current progress in recombinant hookworm vaccines. We begin with the identification of hookworm at the start of the 20th century in Southern US, then discuss the progress in developed countries to eliminate human hookworm

An essential early step toward understanding vasculitis was recognition in 1948 of the differences between the small artery disease of polyarteritis, essentially sparing the glomerulus and lungs, and disease of glomerular vessels and small veins, often involving the lungs. By 1951, Churg and Strauss drew on their knowledge of vasculitis literature and renal pathology to provide an authoritative description of the syndrome bearing their names. One year later a paper from Australia described a syndrome of febrile systemic illness with myalgias, arthralgias, microscopic hematuria, and a serum ant

Immune privilege is the condition in which selected immune responses are suppressed or excluded in certain organs, such as the eye. Immune privilege in the eye was described over 130 years ago, but its significance was not appreciated until the early 1950s. Investigations beginning in the 1970s ushered in a new era and revealed that ocular immune privilege is due to anatomical, physiological, and immunoregulatory processes that prevent the induction and expression of immune-mediated inflammation. It is widely believed that immune privilege is an adaptation for reducing immune-mediated injury t

INTRODUCTION: Urology in Cleveland, as in the rest of the country, has evolved greatly over the past century. The recent passing of Resnick and Novick warrants a review of Cleveland's rich urological history.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We reviewed historical and scientific literature and interviewed Cleveland urologists.
RESULTS: Lower joined his cousin Crile as professor at Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) before they cofounded the Cleveland Clinic (CC) in 1921. Goldblatt at CWRU discovered renovascular hypertension, leading Poutasse at CC to develop renovascular arteriography and bypass …

The severity of thalassemia intermedia depends on the degree of imbalance between alpha and non-alpha chains as well as other genetic and environmental factors that modify the natural history of the disease. By definition, the patients spontaneously maintain hemoglobin at or above 7 g/dL, sometimes at the price of intense hyperplasia of the bone marrow that is in turn responsible for bone deformities, osteoporosis, and extramedullary erythropoietic masses that often characterize thalassemia intermedia. Transfusion may become necessary with advancing age, during infection and pregnancy, and whe…

BACKGROUND: The prognosis in Perthes' disease varies considerably according to certain risk factors, but there is no concensus regarding the relative importance of these factors. We assessed the natural history of the disease and defined prognostic factors of value in deciding the proper treatment.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: During the 5-year period 1996-2000, a nationwide study on Perthes' disease was performed in Norway. 425 patients were registered. The present study involved the 212 children (mean age 5.1 years, 77% boys) who were affected unilaterally and who had been treated with physiothera…
