Effect of Limbal relaxing incisions during implantable collamer lens surgery.

BACKGROUND: The limbal relaxing incisions (LRIs) technique is a safe and an inexpensive procedure, which is simple for experts to perform. It can effectively reduce astigmatism and result in a rapid visual rehabilitation. But there are few reports about reducing pre-existing corneal astigmatism by LRI in ICL surgery. Our research was aimed to study the effect of limbal relaxing inci sions during implantable collamer lens (ICL) surgery. METHODS: A prospective analysis reviewing consecutive cases of corneal astigmatism that had either independent ICL surgery (control group) or combined with LRI

[Post-traumatic striate melanokeratosis in a Caucasian woman].

CLINICAL CASE: A fair-skinned woman presented marked striate melanokeratosis in her left eye related to recurrent corneal erosion. The source of pigmentation was a conjunctival melanosis. The conjunctival melanosis responded to treatment with topical mitomycin, while the corneal pigmentation persisted. DISCUSSION: Striate melanokeratosis is a condition described in dark-skinned patients who show a well-defined pigmentation of the limbal area, with only one case of striate melanokeratosis reported previously in a Caucasian person. The stimuli for this proliferation are corneal lesions or melan

Transplantation of amniotic membrane and limbal autograft for patients with recurrent pterygium associated with symblepharon.

AIM: Treatment of recurrent pterygium associated with symblepharon requires both suppression of fibrosis and reconstruction of limbal barrier. To achieve this, human amniotic membrane was transplanted and limbal autografts performed. METHODS: Four patients with severe symblepharon resulting from multiple surgeries for pterygium were treated. Human amniotic membrane was obtained at caesarean section and preserved until surgery. After excision of the fibrous tissues, the amniotic membrane was placed on the sclera, and a limbal autograft transplantation was performed using limbal tissues taken f

Nasal and ocular amyloidosis in a 15-year-old horse.

Localized nasal, conjunctival and corneal amyloidosis was diagnosed in a 15-year-old pony with nasal and conjunctival masses and severe dyspnoea. Multiple swellings had been evident in the nostrils for at least two years and had gradually increased in size before presentation due to dyspnoea and exercise intolerance. Surgical debulking of the masses was performed and histological examination revealed large amounts of extracellular, hyaline, eosinophilic, Congo red positive material in the lamina propria of the nasal mucosa. A tentative diagnosis of localized nasal amyloidosis was made. The tre

Clusterin protein diversity in the primate eye.

PURPOSE: The clusterin gene encodes a multi-functional protein that has been identified in different tissues, including a number of different eye tissues, primarily in the mouse and to a much lesser extent in humans. Clusterin has been implicated in a number of cellular processes such as lipid transport, membrane integrity, apoptosis, and neurodegeneration, all of which could be important to the biology of the eye. In the current communication, we provide data that confirms the expression of clusterin in a number of different human eye tissues and establishes the expression profile of this gen

Multimodal objective assessment of a porcine limbal stem cell deficiency model for corneal therapy research.

Reliable preclinical models that recapitulate human limbal stem cell deficiency (LSCD) and provide objective outcome measures are essential for advancing corneal cell therapies. We induced LSCD in four porcine eyes by total corneal epithelial debridement, tracked healing with serial anterior-segment optical coherence tomography (OCT) (preinjury, 0, 5–11, 17, 23, 28 days), and quantified histological changes via computer-assisted digital pathology. OCT confirmed complete epithelial removal and a reproducible stromal edema peak on days 7–9, followed by incomplete regression by day 28. Histology

Impact of scleral cautery on limbal vasculature after cataract surgery assessed using optical coherence tomography angiography.

We investigate the influence of scleral cautery during cataract surgery on limbal vascular density and remodeling using anterior segment optical coherence tomography angiography (AS-OCTA). Twenty eyes of 20 patients who underwent cataract surgery with a sclerocorneal incision were included. Patients were divided into two groups: non-cautery (n = 10) and cautery (n = 10). The area around the incision site was scanned using AS-OCTA before surgery and at 1, 3, 5, 7, 14, 21, 28, and 90 days postoperatively. Images were analyzed to depict conjunctival vasculature (surface to a depth of 200 μm) and

Consecutive dosing of UVB irradiation induces loss of ABCB5 expression and activation of EMT and fibrosis proteins in limbal epithelial cells similar to pterygium epithelium.

Pterygium pathogenesis is often attributed to a population of altered limbal stem cells, which initiate corneal invasion and drive the hyperproliferation and fibrosis associated with the disease. These cells are thought to undergo epithelial to mesenchymal transition (EMT) and to contribute to subepithelial stromal fibrosis. In this study, the presence of the novel limbal stem cell marker ABCB5 in clusters of basal epithelial pterygium cells co-expressing with P63α and P40 is reported. ABCB5-positive pterygium cells also express EMT-associated fibrosis markers including vimentin and α-SMA whil
