We have compared the erythema and tanning responses in skin type I (n = 15) and skin type IV (n = 17) Caucasoids following a single exposure to solar simulated radiation. The former sunburn easily and do not tan while the latter do not burn and tan readily. The dose of radiation was 5 times the Minimal Erythema Dose (MED). Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most common type of skin cancer, and the greatest risk factor for its development is ultraviolet (UV) radiation exposure related to the sun or tanning. It most commonly presents on sun-exposed areas such as the head and neck, and it commonly has characteristic clinical and dermoscopic findings. This case illustrates a rare presentation of BCC with an unusual location and clinical morphology. The lesion was treated with Mohs micrographic surgery, with no recurrence at 24 months.

Acquired ichthyosis is a rare dermatosis associated with a number of malignancies. Side effects seen on the skin secondary to megavoltage radiotherapy are uncommon but may include fine dry desquamation and tanning. We present a case of ichthyosiform scaling limited to the radiation fields in a patient treated for brain metastases of a primary small cell lung carcinoma. The reader is reminded that side effects of megavoltage treatment do occur on the skin. A brief review of these effects is included.
