Examining suicidality and associated risk factors among refugee children and adolescents in Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Suicide is a leading cause of death among young people globally. Although suicidality has been studied in various populations, limited research has focused on refugee youth in low and middle-income countries. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of suicidal ideation, suicide attempts, and methods of attempted suicide among refugee children and adolescents in southwestern Uganda. We also examined risk factors associated with suicidal ideation in this population. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study of 325 refugee children and adolescents selected through simple random…

Adherence to severe malaria treatment guidelines in Northern Uganda: a mixed-methods study.

BACKGROUND: Adherence to severe malaria treatment guidelines is crucial for effective case management and reducing malaria-related morbidity and mortality. However, non-compliance among healthcare workers remains a challenge, particularly in resource-limited settings. This study assessed the level of adherence to severe malaria treatment guidelines among healthcare workers in public hospitals in the Acholi sub-region of Northern Uganda and explored factors influencing this adherence. METHODS: A convergent parallel mixed-methods design was employed, incorporating both quantitative and qualitat…

A retail audit of mosquito control products in Bidibidi refugee settlement, northwestern Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Uganda remains one of the highest malaria burden countries globally, with refugee populations disproportionately affected. While government-led initiatives, such as free distribution of insecticide-treatesd nets (ITNs) and indoor residual spraying, are key to the vector control response, limited data exist on the role of retail markets in providing complementary mosquito control products (MCPs) in refugee settings. METHODS: As part of the Advancing Evidence for the Global Implementation of Spatial Repellents project, we conducted a retail audit across 61 refugee and host community…

Stigma among ebola disease survivors in Mubende and Kassanda districts, Central Uganda, 2022.

Ebola disease survivors often experience stigma in multiple forms, including felt (perceived) stigma, enacted (action-based) stigma, and institutional stigma. On September 20, 2022, Uganda declared a Sudan Virus Disease (species orthoebolavirus sudanense) outbreak after a patient with confirmed Sudan virus (SUDV) infection was identified in Mubende District. The outbreak led to 142 confirmed and 22 probable cases over the next two months. We examined the types of stigma experienced by survivors and their household members and its effect on their well-being. We conducted a qualitative study dur…

One-year follow-up evaluation of approved Subolesin anti-tick vaccine in Uganda.

After approval of the Subolesin-based anti-tick vaccine in Uganda, we completed a one-year follow-up evaluation study. The results showed significantly 2.1-5.0-fold higher anti-SUB IgG antibody titers in vaccinated cattle in Mbarara and Maruzi with vaccine effectiveness higher than 95 %. In Mbarara, total number of ticks were 0.8-fold lower in vaccinated cattle with a negative correlation tendency between anti-SUB antibody titers and tick counts. The CCHFV-seropositive cattle significantly decreased in 40 % in SUB-vaccinated animals with a significant positive correlation between CCHFV-seropos…

Depression and suicidal ideation among adolescent girls in refugee settlements in northern Uganda.

Depression is a leading cause of disability, morbidity, and mortality among adolescent girls in Africa, with varying prevalence across different populations. However, there is paucity of data on the burden of depression among priority groups in unique settings like adolescent girls living in refugee settlements, where access to mental health services including psychosocial support and psychiatric consultation is scarce. We conducted a cross-sectional, descriptive, observational study among adolescent girls from 4 selected refugee settlements in Obongi and Yumbe districts, Uganda. A multi-stage…

Social realities in remote villages: Infant and young child feeding in Kirewa, Uganda.

Understanding infant and young child feeding (IYCF) practices in Africa requires an examination of the social context. Social relationships influence people through mechanisms such as social support, social influence, social engagement, access to resources and negative social interactions. This study explores how these mechanisms manifest in IYCF in remote villages in Uganda. In 2018, we conducted two focus group discussions each with mothers, fathers and grandparents, ande interviews with two clan leaders, six village health teamers (VHT) and four healthcare workers (HCW). We deductively sear…

Human cytomegalovirus infection among febrile hematological cancer patients at the Uganda Cancer Institute.

UNLABELLED: Hematological cancers, including Leukemias and Lymphomas, and their associated chemotherapy and disease-specific factors, are linked to impaired granulocyte function and numbers, increasing the risk of opportunistic infections, often presenting as fever. Human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) is one of the significant opportunistic infections in these patients, but limited data exists on its seroprevalence and active infection burden among febrile hematological cancer patients in Uganda. We conducted a cross-sectional study from June to August 2017 at the Uganda Cancer Institute (UCI). Blood…

Source-tracking ESBL-producing bacteria at the maternity ward of Mulago hospital, Uganda.

INTRODUCTION: Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae and Enterobacter (EKE) are the leading cause of mortality and morbidity in neonates in Africa. The management of EKE infections remains challenging given the global emergence of carbapenem resistance in Gram-negative bacteria. This study aimed to investigate the source of EKE organisms for neonates in the maternity environment of a national referral hospital in Uganda, by examining the phenotypic and molecular characteristics of isolates from mothers, neonates, and maternity ward. METHODS: From August 2015 to August 2016, we conducted a cr…

Prevalence of Histoplasma Antigenuria among Outpatient Cohort with Advanced HIV in Kampala, Uganda.

In sub-Saharan Africa, an estimated 25% of people with HIV present with advanced HIV and are at high risk of opportunistic infections. Whereas histoplasmosis has occasionally been seen in Uganda, the understanding of the local risk of acute infection is limited. We sought to determine the prevalence of Histoplasma antigenuria using an enzyme immunoassay (EIA, clarus Histoplasma GM EIA, IMMY; Norman, OK, USA) in a cohort of outpatients with advanced HIV disease in Kampala, Uganda. Among the persons with positive urine Histoplasma antigen tests, we assessed their clinical presentation and outcom…

Dynamic choice HIV prevention intervention at outpatient departments in rural Kenya and Uganda.

OBJECTIVE: HIV prevention service delivery models that offer product choices, and the option to change preferences over time, may increase prevention coverage. Outpatient departments in sub-Saharan Africa diagnose a high proportion of new HIV infections, but are an understudied entry point to biomedical prevention. DESIGN: Individually randomized trial of dynamic choice HIV prevention (DCP) intervention vs. standard-of-care (SOC) among individuals with current/anticipated HIV exposure risk at outpatient departments in rural Kenya and Uganda (SEARCH; NCT04810650). METHODS: Our DCP interventio…

Geostatistical Modeling and Prediction of Rift Valley Fever Seroprevalence among Livestock in Uganda.

Uganda reported cases of Rift Valley fever virus (RVFV) for the first time in almost 50 years in 2016, following an outbreak of Rift Valley fever (RVF) that caused four human infections, two of which resulted in death. Subsequent outbreak investigation serosurveys found high seroprevalence of IgG antibodies without evidence of acute infection or IgM antibodies, suggesting the possibility of undetected RVFV circulation prior to the outbreak. After the 2016 outbreak investigation, a serosurvey was conducted in 2017 among domesticated livestock herds across Uganda. Sampling data were incorporated…

Bone mineral density, nutrient intake, and physical activity among young women from Uganda.

UNLABELLED: Few studies have characterized bone mineral density (BMD) among health young African women. In our study of 496 Ugandan women age ≤25 years, we found that women had healthy BMD that were lower on average than the standard reference ranges. Reference ranges available for BMD measurements need greater precision. PURPOSE: Data describing bone mineral density (BMD), nutrient intake, and body composition among healthy, young women in sub-Saharan Africa are limited. Using baseline data from a cohort of young, healthy Ugandan women, we summarize bone health and associated risk factors fo…
