Scleral-sutured intraocular lenses: Single-surgeon technique for suture-preloaded intraocular lens insertion through a small-incision corneal wound.

For scleral intraocular lens (IOL) fixation, suture-loaded IOLs have traditionally been folded in half with a forceps and delivered intraocularly through 3.5 to 4.0 mm corneal wounds. We describe a technique in which a suture-loaded scleral IOL is inserted through a small-incision corneal wound using 2 widely available ocular surgery tools; that is, a C or D cartridge and a Bowman nasolacrimal duct probe. This technique is easy to replicate and can be performed without an assisting surgeon.

Removal of Persistent Cellular Deposits After Foldable Iris-Fixated Phakic IOL Implantation.

PURPOSE: To report a case of severe recurrent cellular deposits after Artiflex intraocular lens (Ophtec B. V., Groningen, The Netherlands) implantation. METHODS: Case report. RESULTS: A 25-year-old woman underwent uneventful Artiflex intraocular lens implantation in both eyes. After 3 months, severe cellular deposits were seen in the posterior surface of the lens in one eye. Topical steroids were administered, with temporary improvement. Four months later, the deposits recurred and did not respond to topical steroids. Corrected distance visual acuity lost five lines. Treatment by polishing t

Role of Scleral Contact Lenses in Management of Coexisting Keratoconus and Stevens-Johnson Syndrome.

PURPOSE: To report the rare coexistence of keratoconus and Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS) managed with scleral contact lenses (ScCLs). METHODS: This is a retrospective case series. Five patients (9 eyes) who had coexisting SJS and corneal ectasia were identified from the database during the 2-year period. Diagnosis of SJS was based on a positive history of drug reactions, signs of ocular surface disease, and the presence of keratinization of lid margins. Keratoconus was diagnosed by slit-lamp biomicroscopy. RESULTS: Five eyes of 3 patients had coexisting SJS and keratoconus and were dispense

Peripheral radial incisions to treat inferior contact lens edge lift after penetrating keratoplasty for keratoconus.

A patient with marked corneal astigmatism and inferior contact edge lift after penetrating keratoplasty for keratoconus had corneal relaxing incisions (CRIs) on the donor button and radial incisions on the host cornea. Results were evaluated by computerized videokeratography and by refitting the contact lens. Two pairs of CRIs decreased astigmatism from 11.00 to 4.25 diopters but did not alleviate the contact lens edge lift, which was caused by excessive steepness in the keratoconic host cornea. After 6 radial incisions were made to flatten the inferior host cornea, the peripheral cornea flatt

[Anterior chamber lenses--the Pannu and other models].

Presented was the comparison of early and late complications arising after implantation of the anterior chamber lenses of the type Kelman Omnifit and Pannu. The period of postoperative observations amounted 1-3 years. It was demonstrated that the Pannu lenses are giving less complications; the authors are connecting this fact with an easier operative technique of their implantation and their greater ability of autoadaptation.

Determination of correct implant size in radial head arthroplasty to avoid overlengthening: surgical technique.

BACKGROUND: Insertion of a radial head implant that results in radial overlengthening has been associated with altered elbow kinematics, increased radiocapitellar joint forces, capitellar erosions, early-onset arthritis, and loss of elbow flexion. The purpose of this study was to identify clinical and radiographic features that may be used to diagnose overlengthening of the radius intraoperatively and on postoperative radiographs. METHODS: Radial head implants of varying thicknesses were inserted into seven cadaver specimens, which were then assessed clinically and radiographically. Eight sta

Refractive surgical correction and treatment of keratoconus.

Keratoconus is an ectatic corneal disorder that causes severe vision loss. Surgical options allow us to correct, partially or totally, the induced refractive error. Intracorneal ring segments (ICRS) implantation represents a minimally invasive surgical option that improves visual acuity, with a high success rate and a low overall complication rate. Corneal allogenic ICRS consists of ring segments derived from allogenic eye bank-processed donor corneas. Selective topography-guided transepithelial photorefractive or phototherapeutic keratectomy combined with CXL is another way in selected cases
