This study investigated changes in voice quality after thyroplasty type I in eight adults with unilateral vocal fold paralysis. A silicone rubber implant was inserted through a window in the thyroid ala and placed between the inner and outer perichondrium to externally medialize the abducted vocal fold. Measures of fundamental frequency (vocal pitch), pitch range, maximum phonation time, s/z ratio, pitch perturbation (vocal jitter), and amplitude perturbation (vocal shimmer) were made 1 to 2 weeks preoperatively and 1 month postoperatively. Postoperative voice quality was characterized by an i…

BACKGROUND: Up to 80% of patients without a recurrent laryngeal nerve palsy report alteration in their voice after a thyroid procedure. The aims of this study were (1) to quantify voice changes after thyroid operation; (2) to correlate the changes to the extent of operation; and (3) to correlate voice changes to intraoperative recurrent laryngeal nerve swelling.
METHODS: Patients undergoing total and hemithyroidectomy were recruited prospectively from the Monash University Endocrine Surgery Unit during a 12-month period. Voice quality was scored subjectively using the Voice Disorder Index (sc…

Within the realm of voice classification, singers could be sub-categorized by the weight of their repertoire, the so-called "singer's Fach." However, the opposite pole terms "lyric" and "dramatic" singing are not yet well defined by their acoustic and articulatory characteristics. Nine professional singers of different singers' Fach were asked to sing a diatonic scale on the vowel /a/, first in what the singers considered as lyric and second in what they considered as dramatic. Image recording was performed using real time magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with 25 frames/s, and the audio signal

OBJECTIVE: Zombification, a magical and religious process in Haiti, has been scientifically studied and remains relevant. Originating from the convergence of African, Caribbean, and Christian rites, it involves a comatose trance, transforming individuals into living dead through Voodoo practices. Haitian zombies consistently exhibit a preserved expression marked by a nasal voice, a result of nasalization-using nasal cavities as resonators during phonation. The aim of this study was to ascertain the mechanisms through which zombification could impact the voices of the subjects.

While the greater part of the patients that we rehabilitate like to speak again in a carried and loud voice; some of them more or less clearly show their reluctance to "amplify" their voice and prefer keeping on with speaking in a conversational tone, even though this appears to be inappropriate in a professional context. Listening attentively to what they can say about it enables us to understand that their reluctance stems from the fact that they find their voice a particularly valuable possession. Hence their anxiety to save their voice, as if using it may also cause its exhaustion. Of cour

INTRODUCTION: University professors, just like teachers, are considered as professional voice users, who are subject to voice disorders and complaints due to their field of work. The present study aims to investigate the relationship between vocal fatigue index and voice handicap index in university professors with and without voice complaint.
METHODS: This is a cross-sectional descriptive-analytic study that was conducted on 84 university professors with an average age of 38.27 ± 9.95. University professors were divided into two groups with and without voice complaints based on the opinion o

INTRODUCTION: Despite its importance in voice training, comprehensive research into sustained vowel phonation with constant pitch and increasing and decreasing loudness, the so-called Messa di Voce, is lacking. The study examines the laryngeal behavior during Messa di Voce, regarding the impact of the speed of execution on voice stability parameters.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Nine untrained, healthy subjects (5 female, 4 male) were asked to perform Messa di Voce exercises on the vowel [i:], involving a gradual increase and decrease of volume. During the first task, each phase should take 3 s, wh

PURPOSE: To describe the emission of upper high notes by professional sopranos by means of the auditory-perceptual evaluation of the singers' voices and self-reports.
METHODS: Five professional sopranos performed an excerpt from a Bellini opera which involved the emission of an upper high note. The auditory-perceptual evaluation was carried out by three speech-language therapists and three singing teachers, who considered brightness, loudness, metal quality, vibrato, breathiness, and resonance on a visual-analytical scale, based on each singer's emission of high notes. After the recording, th

AIMS: Asthma treatment has the potential to affect patients' voices. We undertook detailed characterisation of voice morbidity in patients attending a problem asthma clinic, and we determined how patients' perceptions related to objective assessment by an experienced observer.
METHODS: Forty-three patients took part in the study. Subjects completed the self-administered voice symptom score (VoiSS) questionnaire and underwent digital voice recording. These voice recordings were scored using the grade-roughness-breathiness-asthenicity-strain system (GRBAS). Laryngoscopy was also performed.

In this paper, an experimental study of inter-judge consistency for the different dimensions of a recently proposed new scale for the rating of substitution voices is presented. The IINFVo rating scale tries to score five parameters, namely impression, intelligibility, noise, fluency and voicing. Each parameter is scored between 0 (very good substitution voicing) and 10 (very deviant substitution voicing) on a visual analogue scale. Inter-judge consistencies were measured among semi-professional as well as among professional jury members. The consistencies among semi-professionals, expressed a

INTRODUCTION: Laryngeal tuberculosis (LTB) is the most frequent larynx granulomatous disease. In general there is lung involvement, but in an important proportion of cases you can find LTB without pulmonary disease. The lesions observed in LTB, such as ulceration and fibrosis, can interfere in the process of voice production. The involvement of the mucous lining of the vocal folds can change their flexibility and, consequently, change voice quality, and the main symptom is dysphonia present in almost 90% of cases.
OBJECTIVE: To describe the anatomical characteristics and voice quality in LTB …

OBJECTIVES: Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) particles are a nonresorbable material that allows for permanent vocal fold augmentation. This study investigated morbidity and voice quality in patients treated for unilateral vocal fold paralysis by injection of PDMS particles.
METHODS: Fourteen patients who had neurogenic unilateral vocal fold paralysis of different causes were included in this prospective study. Each patient underwent videostroboscopic assessment before and after operation. Friedrich's dysphonia index (DI), a score system combining subjective and objective parameters, was used to de…

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this paper is to review seminal identity theories grounded in social psychology and one concept from voice science and explain how this group may point to identity factors facilitating or impeding voice habilitation and rehabilitation.
METHODS: Identity theories from the social psychology literature (Dramaturgical Theory, Self-Categorization Theory, Self-Determination Theory, Identity Negotiation Theory) and vocal congruence are described. Concepts are synthesized with voice science research to explore potential identity-behavior relations at play in voice habilitat

OBJECTIVE: The potential for negative sequalae in psychosocial well-being presents clinical importance to the assessment of voice disorders. Despite the impairment voice disorders cause in the psychosocial domain, the clinical assessment of these disorders relies heavily on visual perceptual judgments of the larynx, audio-perceptual, as well as acoustic and aerodynamic measures. While these measures aid in accurate diagnosis and are necessary for standard of care, they present little insight into the patient experience of having a voice disorder.
DESIGN: Retrospective between-subject, non-exp

UNLABELLED: Psychogenic dysphonia refers to the loss of voice, in the absence of apparent structural or neurological pathology. It is a disorder seen more often in women and is usually associated with significant life events and emotional difficulties that may lead to conflict over speaking. Therapeutic interventions in voice disorders recommend the adoption of a multidisciplinary approach to treatment. The following is a case illustration of a 50-year-old married lady with dysphonia and significant marital difficulties.
LEARNING OUTCOMES: The case demonstrates the psychological issues in the
