Mediastinal parathyroid cyst: A case report and review of the literature.

Mediastinal parathyroid cysts (MPCs) are extremely rare, benign lesions arising from the parathyroid glands and residing within the thoracic … erior mediastinum, near the esophagus, suggesting an esophageal duplication cyst or, less likely, a bronchogenic cyst. Video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) was performed, and the entire cyst was excised, confirmed histologically as a mediastinal parathyroid cyst. Mediastinal involvement of PCs poses diagnostic challenges due to their rarity and diverse clini …

[Platypnea-orthodeoxia syndrome : an insightful clinical observation].

We report the case of a patient admitted to the Intensive Care Unit with dyspnea and refractory hypoxemia after surgical resection of a benign bronchogenic cyst. Etiological research approach excluded conventional postoperative hypoxemia causes. Thereafter a platypnea-orthodeoxia syndrome has been diagnosed. Additional tests will demonstrate the existence of a patent foramen ovale. This diagnosis was suitable with the patient's syndrome and was eligible for percutaneous closure procedure allowing immediate resolution of symptoms and confirming the diagnosis.

Early thoracoscopic resection of an atypical upper extralobar sequestration.

We report a very rare case of complex upper extralobar pulmonary sequestration, detected during pregnancy and resected early because the diagnosis was uncertain (possibility of a teratoma). At 2 months, the upper left pulmonary lesion was completely removed by thoracoscopy. Pathology concluded an extralobar sequestration associated with a duplication cyst of mixed bronchogenic and esophageal type. The postoperative course was uneventful. The early thoracoscopic approach in this type of antenatally diagnosed lesion was a good option.

Mediastinal tumors: a clinicopathological analysis.

Between January 1993 and June 2003, 106 patients underwent surgical treatment of a mediastinal mass. Ages ranged from 6 months to 62 years, … ma, 14 (13%) had germ cell tumors, 12 (11%) had neurofibroma, 4 (4%) had ganglioneuroma, 2 (2%) had bronchogenic cyst, and 1 each had thymic cyst and mesothelioma. The overall mortality was 3.8%.

Epithelial cyst of the cardiac papillary muscle: case report and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Reports of endodermal heterotopia (previously known as inclusion cysts) in cardiac atria are rare and there is only a single previous case report of endodermal heterotopia in a cardiac papillary muscle. AIM AND METHODS: A cyst in a cardiac papillary muscle was identified during the autopsy of an 87-year-old man who had died from an unrelated myocardial infarction. The cyst was examined histologically and mucin staining and immunostaining were carried out. RESULTS: We report a unilocular cyst in a cardiac papillary muscle, which is lined by low cuboidal, pseudostratified and occas

Cutaneous lung tissue heterotopia.

AIMS: We describe the clinical and pathological findings of a previously unreported cutaneous lung tissue heterotopia in a child. CASE DETA … is a unique variant of rarely observed bronchus-like entities of the skin, designated as cutaneous bronchogenic cysts or cutaneous branchial cleft cysts.

Cystic echinococcosis: late rupture and complication of a stable pulmonary cyst.

Cystic echinococcosis is observed worldwide. Traditional management includes an invasive surgical approach with adjunctive chemotherapy. It has been suggested that observation alone may be appropriate in asymptomatic individuals with stable cysts. A case involving a 38-year-old Peruvian man with an asymptomatic bronchogenic cyst (suspected to be due to echinococcus, but never definitely diagnosed) is presented. The cyst was first noted in 1998, and was followed for 10 years during which time he remained asymptomatic with minimal radiographic change. One year later, in 2009, he presented with a…

RESULTS: Complete surgical excision of the mass was performed in all patients with esophageal leiomyoma and in 26 patients with mediastinal cyst, while a right upper pulmonary lobectomy was performed in the patient with an intrapulmonary cyst. Digit-assisted thoracoscopic surgery for mediastinal tumors: a novel technique.

Digit-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (DATS) is a novel, minimally invasive approach for achieving a superior mediastinal mass, by allowing the surgeon's finger to pass into the superior mediastinum through a suprasternal route. In this study a DATS procedure for a bronchogenic cyst in the superior mediastinum was performed. The procedure worked well for dissecting the tissue around the mass, and thus reduced the effort required to perform the operation. In the current study DATS was found to be superior to the standard technique.

[A case of double mediastinal tumors].

We reported a pediatric case of double mediastinal tumors. A 7-year-old girl was admitted to our hospital as the abnormal shadows were pointed out on her chest x-ray film. CT scan and MRI suggested the existence of double tumors located at the anterior and middle mediastinum. Both tumors and thymus were removed. Histological diagnosis of one tumor was teratoma of the anterior mediastinum and another was bronchogenic cyst of the middle mediastinum respectively. Pertinent literatures were reviewed.

Mediastinal cysts and intrathoracic thyroid tumors.

Benign cysts of the mediastinum are thought to be predominantly congenital in origin. Hence, a thorough understanding of their clinicopathologic characteristics is facilitated by knowledge of the embryologic development of the intrathoracic organs, as outlined in this review. Pertinent radiological and pathologic features of these lesions are also discussed. In addition, ectopic thyroid tissue may give rise to mediastinal masses. The salient attributes of these tumors are considered as well.

Congenital cystic lesions of the lung.

Congenital cystic lesions of the lung are present in 1 in 10,000-35,000 births and present as a spectrum of anomalies. Majority of these cystic lesions comprise congenital cystic adenomatoid malformations, pulmonary sequestrations, congenital lobar emphysema, and bronchogenic cysts. Most of these lesions are nowadays detected antenatally, however some will present either in the newborn or during later childhood. A review of the aetiology, classification, natural history, investigations, and treatment of congenital cystic lung lesions is discussed.

Rhabdomyosarcoma arising within congenital pulmonary cysts: report of three cases.

Over the past 9 months, three cases of primary pulmonary rhabdomyosarcoma have been treated at British Columbia Children's Hospital. Two patients (aged 24 and 37 months) presented with spontaneous pneumothoraces and had cystic changes in the affected lung on chest radiograph. The third patient (aged 42 months) was evaluated for chronic cough, fever, and failure to thrive. Chest x-ray showed a large mass in the left lower lobe as well as mediastinal adenopathy. All three of these lesions originated within congenital lung cysts, one a peripheral bronchogenic cyst and the others cystic adenomatoi…

BACKGROUND: Cystic degenerations of parathyroid adenoma appear in 4 to 5% of all cases. These tumors might be localized in the mediastinum. … rning the cystic mediastinal lesion suggested the following differential diagnoses: goiter (X-ray), bronchogenic cyst, cervical cyst or esophageal diverticulum (CT). During the operation no adenoma could be found on the left side, but when the cystic mediastinal lesion was finally removed it turned out to be a giant cystic activated parathyroid adenoma. Single-incision surgery with SILS port for anterior mediastinal lesions: initial experience.

Infrasternal mediastinoscopic single-incision surgery is a minimally invasive surgical option for patients with anterior mediastinal lesions. The main drawback of the procedure is difficult when handling the endoscopic instruments through the small infrasternal incision. Herein, we report our initial experience with use of the procedure in 2 patients with bronchogenic cysts in the anterior mediastinum. We found that use of an SILS Port, now widely available for single-incision laparoscopic surgery, can decrease the difficulty of this approach.
