PURPOSE: To evaluate normal Tenon capsule fibroblasts and from pterygia in culture when exposed to cyclosporin 0.05%.
METHODS: A prospective, randomized study was done, involving 20 patients with primary pterygium. Samples of normal and pterygium Tenon's capsule from the same individual were collected, cultured and exposed to cyclosporin 0.05%.
RESULTS: Only 7 samples could be exposed to cyclosporin--6 from pterygial Tenon's capsule and 1 from normal Tenon's capsule. There was a significant reduction of cellular proliferation in the cyclosporin exposed cultures (p<0.05).

A 10 year-old patient was admitted to our hospital due to severe gastrointestinal bleeding. His symptoms included hematochezia and fainting. Neither emergency upper endoscopy nor colonoscopy had identified the site of bleeding. During the colonoscopy they noticed that fresh blood entered the cecum from the ileum. In patients requiring WCE most contraindications are relative and the procedure can be performed safely in almost all clinical settings. The only true remaining contraindications to capsule endoscopy are obstruction/pseudo-obstruction and pregnancy. Informed consent of the risks and benefits, including NNE, should be discussed with all patients undergoing WCE examination.

Wireless capsule endoscopy is a diagnostic procedure to study the pathology of the small intestine physiologically and painlessly. The capsule dimensions are 11 x 26 mm, and takes 2 picture per second whilst 8 hours. Capsule endoscopy (CE) is still of considerable interest and, as in recent years, a large number of abstracts have been devoted to CE in various possible indications. As with the other reports, only the most relevant studies and those covering special and new aspects are discussed in detail here. The remaining abstracts feature in the tables and in the reference list. Push enteroscopy (PE) is still the method of choice with which CE has to be compared, but double-balloon enteroscopy is emerging as another interesting alternative or complementary method.

BACKGROUND AND STUDY AIMS: The small bowel is anatomically difficult to examine; disease conditions are rarely located in it, but can be serious. Neither conventional radiography nor push enteroscopy has sufficient sensitivity and specificity to detect distinct lesions. Experience of radical surgical treatment in 253 patients with hepatic echinococcosis is presented. Twenty-six patients underwent hepatic resection; 218, pericystectomy, 9 patients, combined interventions. Based on comparative analysis of the results of surgical treatment in 109 patients from the study and control groups, it is concluded that radical operations have significant advantages and show fever postoperative complications and recurrences. Removal of fibrous capsule is a token of successful treatment for hepatic echinococcosis.
