Correlation between primary headaches and learning disabilities in children and adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Primary headaches (H) and learning disabilities (LD) are frequent in childhood and can coexist in the same subject, but their correlation is not always clear. The aim of our study was to evaluate this relationship considering also any psychopathologies and their influence on the quality of life by considering an aspect such as school absences. METHODS: One hundred and ninety-three children (8-18y) with H and LD assessed consecutively at the Headache Center of L'Aquila, from 2013 to 2018 are the sample. School problems were evaluated by Italian batteries for LD; psychopathology scr

Attachment representations among school-age children with intellectual disability.

BACKGROUND: Research data documenting a high risk of insecure and disorganized attachment among children with intellectual disability (ID) in infancy and early childhood raises the question of mutual influences between ID and attachment in later childhood. AIMS: The objectives of the present study were to examine attachment among school-age children with ID and whether attachment varies according to level of intellectual functioning, adaptative functioning, and presence of a genetic syndrome (i.e. Down syndrome). METHODS: Attachment among 54 children with ID aged 8-12 years (30 with Down Syn

Risk factors for intellectual disability in children with spastic cerebral palsy.

BACKGROUND: Cerebral palsy (CP) is a non-progressive disorder of posture and movement caused by prenatal or perinatal lesions of the brain. Children with CP are also at increased risk of other disabilities, for example, intellectual disability. Previous studies suggest the risk of intellectual disability varies in complex ways according to the type of motor impairment and perinatal factors such as gestational age. OBJECTIVE: To determine the patterns of risk of intellectual disability in children with spastic CP. DESIGN: Cross-sectional, population-based study using the Northern Ireland Cere

Children 'At Risk' of Developing Specific Learning Disability in Primary Schools.

OBJECTIVES: To study the proportion of children of age 5 to 7 y at risk of specific learning disability (SLD) and to analyse the socio-demographic risk factors. METHODS: A school based cross-sectional study was conducted in six schools in Puducherry. Four hundred eighty students were enrolled and study was conducted in a triphasic approach. Phase I- Screening by teachers using SLD-SQ (Specific Leaning Disability - Screening Questionnaire); Phase II- Vision, hearing, and Intelligence Quotient (IQ) assessment were done in students screened positive with SLD-SQ and those with vision or hearing i

Intellectual Disability in Children Conceived Using Assisted Reproductive Technology.

OBJECTIVES: To examine whether children conceived using assisted reproductive technology (ART) have a higher risk of intellectual disability (ID) compared with non-ART-conceived children and describe known causes of ID in these groups. METHODS: We linked ID and ART data from population-based registers in Western Australia. Our cohort included live births from 1994 to 2002 (n = 210 627) with at least 8 years of follow-up. The prevalence of ID was compared between ART- and non-ART-conceived children, and risk of ID was estimated using Poisson regression with robust SEs. We also stratified by pl

Mental Disorders and Learning Disabilities in Children and Adolescents: Eating Disorders.

Eating disorders are common. The typical onset of eating disorders is in mid- to late adolescence, affecting females more often than males. However, rates of eating disorders are increasing among younger children, males, and minority groups. Warning signs include abrupt changes in weight or growth percentiles, a preoccupation with calories or weight, altered eating habits, excessive exercise, loss of menses, pubertal delay, and a distorted perception of body size. For patients with eating disorders that include dietary restriction (eg, anorexia nervosa, avoidant restrictive food intake disorde

Heart transplantation in children with intellectual disability: An analysis of the UNOS database.

Heart transplantation in children with intellectual disability (ID) is an issue of debate due to the shortage of available donor organs. We sought to perform the first large-scale retrospective cohort study describing the prevalence and outcomes of heart transplantation in this population. The United Network of Organ Sharing database was queried from 2008 to 2015 for pediatric patients (age <19 years) receiving first, isolated heart transplant. Recipients were divided into three subgroups: definite ID, probable ID, and no ID. The chi-square test was used to compare patients' baseline character

UNEQUAL BRAINS: DISABILITY DISCRIMINATION LAWS AND CHILDREN WITH CHALLENGING BEHAVIOUR.

At a time when brain-based explanations of behaviour are proliferating, how will law respond to the badly behaved child? In Australia, children and youth with challenging behaviours such as aggression, swearing, or impulsivity are increasingly understood as having a behavioural disability and so may be afforded the protections of discrimination law. A brain-based approach to challenging behaviour also offers a seemingly neutral framework that de-stigmatises a child's 'bad' behaviour, making it a biological or medical issue rather than a failure of discipline or temperament. Yet this 'brain-bas

Is Celiac Disease an Etiological Factor in Children with Nonsyndromic Intellectual Disability?

To determine the prevalence of celiac disease in children and adolescents with nonsyndromic intellectual disability, we investigated serum levels of tissue transglutaminase antibody and total IgA from 232 children with nonsyndromic intellectual disability and in a healthy control group of 239 children. Study participants who were positive for tissue transglutaminase antibody underwent a duodenal biopsy. A total of 3 patients in the nonsyndromic intellectual disability group (5.45%) and 1 in the control group (0.41%) had positive serum tissue transglutaminase antibody (P > .05). Duodenal biopsy

Oral Myiasis: A Concealed Threat to Disabled Children of Developing Countries.

Disabled children with special health care needs are at high risk for oral disease. Myiasis is a rare condition that is associated with inadequate public and personal hygiene and is common in medically, mentally, and physically compromised individuals living in developing tropical countries. The purpose of this paper is to describe a case of oral myiasis in a 13-year-old Indian girl with spastic cerebral palsy.

Reading disabilities in children: A selective meta-analysis of the cognitive literature.

This article synthesizes literature that compares the academic, cognitive, and behavioral performance of children with and without reading disabilities (RD). Forty-eight studies met the criteria for the meta-analysis, yielding 735 effect sizes (ESs) with an overall weighted ES of 0.98. Small to high ESs in favor of children without RD emerged on measures of cognition (rapid naming [ES = 0.89], phonological awareness [ES = 1.00], verbal working memory [ES = 0.79], short-term memory [ES = 0.56], visual-spatial memory [ES = 0.48], and executive processing [ES = 0.67]), academic achievement (pseud

Differences in the intellectual profile of children with intellectual vs. learning disability.

The WISC-IV was used to compare the intellectual profile of two groups of children, one with specific learning disorders (SLDs), the other with intellectual disabilities (ID), with a view to identifying which of the four main factor indexes and two additional indexes can distinguish between the groups. We collected information on WISC-IV scores for 267 children (Mage=10.61 [SD=2.51], range 6-16 years, females=99) with a diagnosis of either SLD or ID. Children with SLD performed better than those with ID in all measures. Only the SLD children, not the ID children, revealed significant differenc

Obesity in children with headaches: association with headache type, frequency, and disability.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the association between obesity and the different types of primary headaches, and the relation to headache frequency and disability BACKGROUND: The association between obesity and headache has been well established in adults, but only a few studies have examined this association in children, in particular, the relationship between obesity and different types of primary headaches. METHODS: The authors retrospectively evaluated 181 children evaluated for headaches as their primary complaint between 2006 and 2007 in their Pediatric Neurology Clinic. Data regarding age, gen

[Understand the neurodevelopment of language: a necessity to prevent learning disabilities in children].

Clinical and radiological knowledge of language development in the former premature infant compared to the newborn allows us to argue for exploration of the sensorimotor co-factors required for proper language development. There are early representations of the maternal language in the infant's visual, auditory, and sensorimotor areas, activated or stabilized by orofacial and articulatory movements. The functional architecture of language is different for vulnerable children such as premature infants. We have already mentioned the impact of early dysfunction of the facial praxis fine motor ski

Inhibitory control and adaptive behaviour in children with mild intellectual disability.

BACKGROUND: Inhibitory control, as one of the basic mechanisms of executive functions, is extremely important for adaptive behaviour. The relation between inhibitory control and adaptive behaviour is the most obvious in cases of behavioural disorders and psychopathology. Considering the lack of studies on this relation in children with disabilities, the aim of our research is to determine the relation between inhibitory control and adaptive behaviour in children with mild intellectual disability. METHOD: The sample consists of 53 children with mild intellectual disability. Selection criteria …

Genetic studies in children with intellectual disability and autistic spectrum of disorders.

Autism is one of the five disorders that falls under the umbrella of Pervasive Developmental Disorders (PDD) or Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), a category of neurological disorders characterized by "severe and pervasive impairment in several areas of development." ASD is characterized by varying degrees of impairment in communication skills, social interaction and restricted, repetitive stereotyped patterns of behavior. The five disorders under PDD are autistic disorder, Asperger's disorder, childhood disintegrative disorder, Rett's disorder and PDD-not otherwise specified. ASD can often be re

Outcome and extent of disability following Japanese encephalitis in Indonesian children.

OBJECTIVES: The study aimed to assess outcome, including level of disability, following Japanese encephalitis (JE) in children in Indonesia. METHODS: A cohort of children diagnosed with laboratory-confirmed JE from January 2005 to August 2006 was followed-up, with disability measured at least 4 months after discharge from hospital. An assessment tool that can be used to rapidly determine practical level of disability and the likelihood that a child will be able to live independently after illness, the Liverpool Outcome Score, was used. RESULTS: Of 72 children with JE, determination of outcom

Auditory word perception in sentence context in reading-disabled children.

Reading difficulties seem to be related to a phonological deficit that has its origin in poor speech perception. As such, disabled readers may use contextual cues to compensate for their weak speech perception abilities. We compared good and poor readers, 7-13 years old, on auditory perception of words varying in phonological contrast, in congruent versus incongruent sentence contexts. Both groups did worse in the phonologically similar than in the phonologically dissimilar incongruent condition. Magnetoencephalography revealed differential activation between the groups as a function of phonol

Measuring functional skills in preschool children at risk for neurodevelopmental disabilities.

Approximately 400,000 preschool children have a major neurodevelopmental disorder impacting on mobility, cognitive-adaptive, or communicative skills. As many as 1 in 3 children live at psychosocial disadvantage because of poverty, parental mental illness or substance misuse, or low parental educational (i.e. less than high school). In the past decade over 500,000 preschool children have survived being born with very low birth weight (1001-1500 g) or extremely low birth weight status (< or =1000 g). Given the scope of these risks and the importance of optimizing outcomes for vulnerable children

Perception of human and nonhuman facial age by developmentally disabled children.

Human and nonhuman faces were shown to clinical controls, autistic, mentally retarded, and language-disordered children to assess their ability to detect and draw inferences about facial age. Children were asked to select from sets of three faces the one that appeared youthful or to select faces that would be associated with some age-related characteristic. In two studies, it was found that, relative to other children, autistic children had more difficulty perceiving youthfulness in nonhuman faces compared with human faces. These data are discussed with respect to differences in mechanisms and
