Primary and booster vaccination with an inactivated poliovirus vaccine (IPV) is immunogenic and well-tolerated in infants and toddlers in China.

INTRODUCTION: Replacing live-attenuated oral poliovirus vaccines (OPV) with inactivated poliovirus vaccines (IPV) is part of the global strategy to eradicate poliomyelitis. China was declared polio-free in 2000 but continues to record cases of vaccine-associated-poliomyelitis and vaccine-derived-poliovirus outbreaks. Two pilot safety studies and two larger immunogenicity trials evaluated the non-inferiority of IPV (Poliorix™, GSK Vaccines, Belgium) versus OPV in infants and booster vaccination in toddlers primed with either IPV or OPV in China. METHODS: In pilot safety studies, 25 infants rec

Will booster doses be required for serogroup B meningococcal vaccine?

The European licensure of 4CMenB, the first vaccine licensed to prevent non-epidemic meningococcal B (MenB) disease, marked an important milestone in the fight against meningococcal disease. However, the potential introduction of 4CMenB into the routine infant schedule is complicated by a number of factors. The recent decline in the number of cases of invasive MenB disease in the UK has important implications for cost effectiveness, though the unpredictable nature of meningococcal disease epidemiology (as evidenced by a recent outbreak in MenB disease at Princeton University) means that it is

Efficacy and duration of immunity after yellow fever vaccination: systematic review on the need for a booster every 10 years.

Abstract. Current regulations stipulate a yellow fever (YF) booster every 10 years. We conducted a systematic review of the protective efficacy and duration of immunity of YF vaccine in residents of disease-endemic areas and in travelers to assess the need for a booster in these two settings and in selected populations (human immunodeficiency virus-infected persons, infants, children, pregnant women, and severely malnourished persons). Thirty-six studies and 22 reports were included. We identified 12 studies of immunogenicity, 8 of duration of immunity, 8 of vaccine response in infants and chi

The influence of BCG immunisation on tuberculin reactivity and booster effect in adults in a country with a high prevalence of tuberculosis.

The relationship of age and previous BCG vaccination with tuberculin skin test (TST) reactivity was investigated to assess the interpretation of TST results in the adult population of Turkey, where there is a high prevalence of tuberculosis and a routine BCG vaccination programme. The influences of age and BCG vaccine status on booster reaction were also evaluated. TST was applied (5 tuberculin units of purified protein derivative intradermally) to two healthy adult groups, namely 98 medical students and 187 elderly people in a retirement home. The TST was considered positive if an induration

Immunogenicity and efficacy of one dose measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine at twelve months of age as compared to monovalent measles vaccination at nine months followed by MMR revaccination at fifteen months of age.

BACKGROUND AND METHODS: measles is a common cause of morbidity and mortality in developing countries. Although the measles-mumps-rubella vaccine (MMR) is currently in use in developed countries, monovalent measles vaccine (MV) is routinely recommended by World Health Organization (WHO) at 9 months of age in Turkey, as in many other developing countries. In this study, 442 Turkish children received MV at 9 months of age and were revaccinated with MMR vaccine at 15 months of age. In the second group 495 children received MMR at 12 months of age with no earlier measles vaccination. Antibodies wer

The need for post-vaccination serology and the timing of booster vaccinations against hepatitis B in dental health care workers.

Viral hepatitis caused by the hepatitis B virus is a disease which has no oral manifestations but is of direct concern to dental health care workers due to its transmissibility by transfer of minute quantities of infected body fluids from patients with the condition. Many chronic carriers of HBV do not have signs and symptoms of hepatitis and are frequently unaware of the virus they harbour. In recent years immunization against HBV has become possible and a high success rate has been achieved in inducing immunity against HBV in dental health care workers who have completed an immunization prog

Low-dose intradermal and intramuscular vaccination against hepatitis B.

Hepatitis B and its sequelae are global problems preventable by immunization. Expense limits the use of hepatitis B vaccines, but low-dose intradermal immunization has been evaluated as a cost-saving strategy in numerous studies. With few exceptions, low-dose intradermal plasma-derived vaccines have elicited protective levels of antibody in 82%-100% of young healthy adults--a proportion similar to that noted with full-dose regimens; peak levels of antibody to hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) are lower with reduced doses, however. Although children respond well to low-dose intradermal immuni

Diphtheria in the United States, 1971-81.

After a decade-long resurgence, including a large cutaneous diphtheria outbreak in Washington State, the diphtheria incidence rate in the United States reached its lowest recorded level ever in 1980--two patients (0.01 case per million). Mortality paralleled the decline in incidence rate. Only 143 of the 3,141 US counties reported noncutaneous diphtheria patients during 1971-81; most were located in the West. The highest attack rates were experienced by children less than 15 years old (0.8 case per million) and by American Indians (22.6 cases per million). Persons immunized with three or more

Humoral and cell-mediated immune responses in humans before and after revaccination with vaccinia virus.

Twenty-six healthy males vaccinated 15 to 18 years ago with vaccinia virus were revaccinated. Blood samples were collected before vaccination and 3 weeks after. The lymphocytes were tested in a blast transformation assay with vaccinia antigen and phytohemagglutinin, and interferon production was measured. The sera were subjected to neutralization and antibody-dependent cell-mediated cytotoxicity (ADCC) tests. All results were compared with clinical responses. The only test showing immunity in all donors before vaccination was the ADCC. The other tests showed a very limited residual immunity or

Parental preferences for immunization advisory clinic settings for children with special health care needs and associated factors in Shanghai: A cross-sectional study.

Children with special health care needs (CSHCN) face persistent immunization inequity despite high overall childhood vaccination coverage. Immunization advisory clinics (IACs) have expanded in China, yet parental preferences for different IAC settings remain poorly understood. This cross-sectional survey was conducted at the IAC of Children's Hospital of Fudan University, Shanghai, between October and December 2023. Parents of CSHCN younger than 14 y with incomplete National Immunization Program schedules were invited. The primary outcome was parental preference for IAC setting (community clin

Advancements in monitoring adverse events following immunization in Iraq: Insights from the CIVIE project 2022-2023.

Adverse Events Following Immunization (AEFI) surveillance is crucial for ensuring vaccine safety and maintaining public trust. In Iraq, AEFI monitoring faced limitations for years due to a paper-based reporting system, low reporting rates and inadequate data management. This study describes the advancements in AEFI surveillance implemented through the COVID-19 International Vaccine Implementation and Evaluation (CIVIE) project between 2022 and 2023 and the effects on acute events monitoring. A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted using secondary data from Iraq's Expanded Program on

Vaccine failures: assessing yellow fever, measles, varicella, and mumps vaccines.

Vaccination is one of the greatest public health interventions, based on its safety and effectiveness, but vaccination does not always mean immunization. Numerous aspects related both to the individual that receives the vaccine and the specificity of each vaccine administered are part of the process of obtaining adequate immunization, and it is essential to observe the aspects in order to avoid vaccine failures. The analysis of immunogenicity and effectiveness studies for the measles, varicella, and mumps vaccines point to the need to incorporate two doses into the basic vaccination calendars

Enhanced immunogenicity of BCG vaccine by using a viral-based GM-CSF transgene adjuvant formulation.

The failure of current BCG vaccine in controlling the global tuberculosis (TB) epidemic highlights an urgent need for improved TB vaccine formulations. In this study, we have investigated the effect of a novel adenoviral granulocyte macrophage-colony stimulating factor (GM-CSF) transgene-based adjuvant formulation (AdGM-CSF) on BCG vaccination in a mouse strain that is genetically weak responders to BCG vaccine. BALB/c mice were immunized subcutaneously (s.c.) with PBS, BCG, or BCG plus AdGM-CSF or control vector Addl70-3, the immunogenicity of BCG vaccine was evaluated by type 1 IFN-gamma pro

Waning immunity and the future of booster vaccination strategies in global vaccine programs post COVID-19.

The problem of waning immunity is a major global concern of vaccine programs, with immunity against diseases such as COVID-19 (reduction in efficacy by ~25% in six months), pertussis (waning in 4-12 y), and influenza (annual updates needed) expected to decrease with time. While boosters reduce serious results in high-risk categories, these effects are short-term (4-6 months) and encourage global imbalances, where low-income areas lag in primary vaccination (<2%). Computational models have shown that primary vaccination in underserved regions prevents ~60% of hospitalizations worldwide, surpass

Incremental effectiveness of the second dose of mumps-containing vaccine among children 9 months to 6 years in Hefei: A matched case-control study.

To evaluate the incremental vaccine effectiveness (IVE) of the second dose of mumps-containing vaccine (2thMuCV) compared to first dose and to provide evidence for optimizing mumps immunization strategies. We conducted a 1:1 matched case-control study of mumps cases reported in Hefei from 2018 to 2024 (aged 9 months to 6 years), selecting community controls without a history of mumps infection and matching them by age and sex. A total of 3483 pairs of cases and controls were included, of whom 21.76% and 23.02% had received two-doses MuCV respectively. The overall IVE of 2thMuCV was 22.35% (95%
