Interidentity amnesia for neutral, episodic information in dissociative identity disorder.

Interidentity amnesia is considered a hallmark of dissociative identity disorder (DID) in clinical practice. In this study, objective methods of testing episodic memory transfer between identities were used. Tests of both recall (interference paradigm) and recognition were used. A sample of 31 DID patients was included. Additionally, 50 control subjects participated, half functioning as normal controls and the other half simulating interidentity amnesia. Twenty-one patients subjectively reported complete one-way amnesia for the learning episode. However, objectively, neither recall nor recogni

Inhibition of hippocampal function in mild cognitive impairment: targeting the cholinergic hypothesis.

Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is a condition with an increased risk of developing Alzheimer's disease. Chief complaint and diagnostic criterion in subjects with mild cognitive impairment is memory failure. We hypothesized that cholinergic malfunction may underlie memory impairment in these subjects and applied a low dosage of an acetylcholinesterase inhibitor and modulator of nicotinic acetylcholine receptors, galantamine (4 mg bid), for 7 days. We used neuropsychological tests to investigate attention, cognitive flexibility, verbal and visual short-term and working memory, susceptibility to

[Pure Amnesia].

Pure amnesia (amnesic syndrome) is an organic brain syndrome characterized by impairment in episodic memory, with either an anterograde or sometimes retrograde loss of memories. Although episodic memory is impaired, semantic memory, immediate memory, and procedural memory are preserved. The Papez circuit is a network of nerve fibers and nerve centers that starts and ends in the hippocampus travelling by way of the fornix, mammillary bodies, anterior thalamic nuclei, cingulate gyrus, and parahippocampal gyrus. A lesion restricted to this circuit often produces pure amnesia. Regions concerned wi

Disrupted emotion-memory interactions in behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia.

OBJECTIVE: Autobiographical memory specificity is markedly reduced in behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD). Because emotion is known to facilitate autobiographical memory retrieval in healthy adults, we investigated whether emotional cueing could enhance autobiographical specificity in bvFTD. METHODS: Patients with bvFTD and age-matched healthy control participants were asked to retrieve autobiographical memories in response to positive, negative, and neutral cue words. Participants were also asked to rate the emotional valence of the memories they retrieved. RESULTS: Across all

Memory functioning after hippocampal removal: Does side matter?

To address the memory functioning after medial temporal lobe (MTL) surgery for refractory epilepsy and relationships with the side of the hippocampal removal, 22 patients with pharmaco-resistant epilepsy who had undergone MTL resection (10 right/12 left) at the Salpêtrière Hospital were compared with 21 matched healthy controls. We designed a specific neuropsychological binding memory test that specifically addressed hippocampal cortex functioning, and left-right material-specific lateralization. Our results showed that both left and right mesial temporal lobe removal cause a severe memory imp

Dissecting the Fornix in Basic Memory Processes and Neuropsychiatric Disease: A Review.

Background: The fornix is the primary axonal tract of the hippocampus, connecting it to modulatory subcortical structures. This review reveals that fornix damage causes cognitive deficits that closely mirror those resulting from hippocampal lesions. Methods: We reviewed the literature on the fornix, spanning non-human animal lesion research, clinical case studies of human patients with fornix damage, as well as diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) work that evaluates fornix microstructure in vivo. Results: The fornix is essential for memory formation because it serves as the conduit for theta rhyt

Association of genetic risk factors with cognitive decline: the PATH through life project.

We examined the association of 28 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), previously associated with dementia or cognitive performance, with tests assessing episodic memory, working memory, vocabulary, and perceptual speed in 1689 nondemented older Australians of European ancestry. In addition to testing each variant individually, we assessed the collective association of the 12-risk SNPs for late-onset Alzheimer's disease using weighted and unweighted genetic risk scores. Significant associations with cognitive performance were observed for APOE ε4 allele, ABCA7-rs3764650, CR1-rs3818361, MS4A

'Paradoxical' alpha synchronization in a memory task.

The results of a specially designed memory search paradigm which maximizes episodic short-term memory (STM) and minimizes semantic long-term memory (LTM) demands show that the upper alpha band synchronizes selectively in those conditions and time intervals where episodic STM demands are maximal. This finding of a selective alpha synchronization occurring only in the upper alpha band and during highest task demands is surprising because it is well known that usually alpha desynchronizes during mental activity. Because experiments from our laboratory indicate that desynchronization in the upper

Differential Laminar Activation Dissociates Encoding and Retrieval in the Human Medial and Lateral Entorhinal Cortex.

The hierarchically organized structures of the medial temporal lobe are critically important for episodic memory function. Accumulating evidence suggests dissociable information processing pathways are maintained throughout these structures including in the medial and lateral entorhinal cortex. Cortical layers provide an additional dimension of dissociation as the primary input to the hippocampus derives from layer 2 neurons in the entorhinal cortex, whereas the deeper layers primarily receive output from the hippocampus. Here, novel high-resolution T2-prepared functional MRI methods were succ

Prospective memory in multiple sclerosis: clinical utility of the Miami Prospective Memory Test.

Objective: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic inflammatory disease of the central nervous system that frequently affects cognition. Persons with MS (PwMS) complain of difficulties with prospective memory (PM), the capacity to remember to perform an intended action at the appropriate moment in the future. The objective of this study was to assess the clinical utility of the Miami Prospective Memory Test (MPMT) in detecting PM deficits in MS. The test is brief, easy to administer and accessible, and allows direct comparison between scores on event- and time-based conditions. A secondary object

A neural code for egocentric spatial maps in the human medial temporal lobe.

Spatial navigation and memory rely on neural systems that encode places, distances, and directions in relation to the external world or relative to the navigating organism. Place, grid, and head-direction cells form key units of world-referenced, allocentric cognitive maps, but the neural basis of self-centered, egocentric representations remains poorly understood. Here, we used human single-neuron recordings during virtual spatial navigation tasks to identify neurons providing a neural code for egocentric spatial maps in the human brain. Consistent with previous observations in rodents, these

The prospective memory of patients with idiopathic REM sleep behavior disorder.

BACKGROUND: Idiopathic rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder (iRBD) likely represents the prodromal stage of synucleinopathy. The present study was to investigate if there was prospective memory (PM) impairment and the relationship between different PM tasks and traditional cognitive tests in patients with iRBD. METHODS: A total of 28 patients with iRBD, 25 with Parkinson's disease (PD) and 21 healthy controls were included. The Cambridge Prospective Memory Test (CAMPROMPT) was used to measure the PM including time-based (TBPM) and event-based PM (EBPM). Standard cognitive tests were adm

Autobiographical memory and the self in a single-case of chronic unilateral spatial neglect.

Unilateral spatial neglect (USN) is mainly defined as a condition affecting perception and the mental representation of the environment. However, nothing is known about its impact on the ability to mentally represent one's past and on personal identity. We addressed these questions in a case of chronic USN, DR, a 59-year-old right-handed woman, who underwent a variety of measures exploring the self and autobiographical memory (AM). DR showed preserved self-images and her AM performance was only preserved when memories were prompted by her own self-images and not by self-unrelated cues. Our fin

Early memories in social anxiety: A meaningful and enduring collaboration with my Dad.

In this short paper in honour of my father's Festschrift, I describe a recent collaboration with him in which we joined forces to investigate the nature of autobiographical images and memories in social anxiety. I outline our work together and the unique insights that were gleaned from our interactive contributions. Then, I reflect on how this collaboration has helped to lay the foundation for subsequent work in my lab and illuminate new directions in my program of research, enhance my career as a scientist-practitioner, and ultimately, enrich both my personal and professional identities. The TMA-93: A New Memory Test for Alzheimer's Disease in Illiterate and Less Educated People.

The present study aimed at validating the Memory Associative Test of the district of Seine-Saint-Denis (TMA)-93, a new test of episodic memory. The TMA-93 was proposed to mostly less educated and multicultural elderly population composed of 376 healthy controls (HC) and 94 patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD). The construct validity was checked by studying correlations with a widely used memory test (the Free and Cued Selective Reminding Test [FCSRT]) in the subsample of literate patients. Results showed that (i) all the TMA-93 scores of the patients with AD were lower than those of the HC,

Aβ-related hyperactivation in frontoparietal control regions in cognitively normal elderly.

The accumulation of amyloid-beta (Aβ) peptides, a pathologic hallmark of Alzheimer's disease, has been associated with functional alterations in cognitively normal elderly, most often in the context of episodic memory with a particular emphasis on the medial temporal lobes. The topography of Aβ deposition, however, highly overlaps with frontoparietal control (FPC) regions implicated in cognitive control/working memory. To examine Aβ-related functional alternations in the FPC regions during a working memory task, we imaged 42 young and 57 cognitively normal elderly using functional magnetic res

Semantic priming and verbal learning in current opiate users, ex-users and non-user controls.

OBJECTIVE: Despite a growing interest in memory functions of chronic drug users, investigation of semantic and episodic memory in opiate users is limited, and findings of studies have been inconsistent. The present study aimed to assess semantic memory and episodic memory for both drug-related and neutral stimuli in current and ex-users of opiates. METHODS: Using an independent group design, we assessed semantic priming and verbal learning in 16 current opiate users on a methadone maintenance programme, 16 ex-opiate users in rehabilitation programmes and 16 healthy controls. The groups were m

A PET Study of Persistent Psychogenic Amnesia Covering the Whole Life Span.

A patient with ongoing psychogenic amnesia is described. NN lost his personal identity eight months prior to the reported investigation. All physical and neurological examinations, including magnetic resonance imaging, were unremarkable. Neuropsychological testing revealed above-average intelligence and anterograde memory abilities. No retrograde amnesia for factual knowledge was detected. However, severe persistent amnesia was found for personal events prior to the psychogenic fugue (retrograde episodic amnesia). In contrast, personal episodes subsequent to the fugue were well preserved. For

Cognitive deficits and course of recovery in transient global amnesia: a systematic review.

OBJECTIVE: Published evidence suggests that cognitive impairment during a TGA (transient global amnesia) spell may not be confined to episodic memory. We undertook a systematic review to determine the pattern of cognitive deficits during a TGA episode. As a secondary objective, we aimed to delineate the course of cognitive recovery. METHODS: MEDLINE, EMBASE, CENTRAL, and Google scholar were systematically searched up to October 2023. Observational controlled studies including 10 or more TGA patients (Hodges and Warlow criteria) were retrieved. Data from case-control, cross-sectional, and coho
