Inhibition of motoneuron discharge by peripheral nerve stimulation: an F response analysis.

F waves were recorded from the abductor pollicis brevis stimulating the median nerve at the wrist. These data were compared to responses obtained after preceding supramaximal stimulation of digital fibers of the second (II) finger or the median nerve at the wrist. The time between conditioning and test stimuli were 50 msec. Following conditioning stimuli, F wave latencies were significantly increased while F amplitudes, durations, and persistences were all decreased. Chronodispersion was not significantly affected. These changes were associated with increased repetition of individual F respons

The electrophysiologic profile of Dejerine-Sottas disease (HMSN III).

Electrophysiologic studies in 11 patients with Dejerine-Sottas disease (hereditary motor and sensory neuropathy type III, HMSN III) showed median and ulnar motor nerve conduction velocities less than 6 m/sec in all but 1 patient. Marked temporal dispersion without conduction block was present in all patients. Uniform slowing in adjacent motor nerves was consistent with other studies of inherited neuropathies, although marked temporal dispersion may make HMSN III more difficult to distinguish from acquired neuropathies than other hereditary conditions. The electrophysiologic features of HMSN II

Brain stem reticular units: some properties of the course and origin of the ascending trajectory.

Experiments were conducted in acutely prepared cats anesthetized with halothane-nitrous oxide. Single units were recorded in the mesencephalic and rostral rhombencephalic reticular core, and their ascending axons were stimulated in the mesencephalon, diencephalon, and telencephalon. The locations of stimulation and recording sites were determined by histological examination of the brains. Antidromic spikes were elicited by electrodes with a stimulus spread of approximately 300 mum and were collided with spontaneous (orthodromic) spikes to confirm antidromicity. Projecting axons were found to b

The impact of hearing loss on tone discrimination: An fMRI study.

Hearing deprivation induces structural and functional reorganization in the brain, which compromises an individual's language processing capacity. As a tonal language, Mandarin Chinese requires fine-grained auditory processing for lexical tone discrimination. Nevertheless, the neural mechanisms through which hearing loss influences this process remain poorly understood. This study utilized functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to examine behavioral performance and neural activation patterns during Mandarin tone discrimination tasks in individuals with early-onset deafness. Participants

Clinical Basis for Creating an Osseointegrated Neural Interface.

As technology continues to improve within the neuroprosthetic landscape, there has been a paradigm shift in the approach to amputation and surgical implementation of haptic neural prosthesis for limb restoration. The Osseointegrated Neural Interface (ONI) is a proposed solution involving the transposition of terminal nerves into the medullary canal of long bones. This design combines concepts of neuroma formation and prevention with osseointegration to provide a stable environment for conduction of neural signals for sophisticated prosthetic control. While this concept has previously been expl

Adaptations in human neuromuscular function following prolonged unweighting: II. Neurological properties and motor imagery efficacy.

Strength loss following disuse may result from alterations in muscle and/or neurological properties. In this paper, we report our findings on human plantar flexor neurological properties following 4 wk of limb suspension [unilateral lower limb suspension (ULLS)], along with the effect of motor imagery (MI) training on these properties. In the companion paper (Part I), we report our findings on the changes in skeletal muscle properties. Additionally, in the present paper, we analyze our findings to determine the relative contribution of neural and muscular factors in strength loss. Measurements

PIEZO2-dependent rapid pain system in humans and mice.

The PIEZO2 ion channel is critical for transducing light touch into neural signals but is not considered necessary for transducing acute pain in humans. Here, we discovered an exception - a form of mechanical pain evoked by hair pulling. Based on observations in a rare group of individuals with PIEZO2 deficiency syndrome, we demonstrated that hair-pull pain is dependent on PIEZO2 transduction. Studies in control participants showed that hair-pull pain triggered a distinct nocifensive response, including a nociceptive reflex. Observations in rare Aβ deafferented individuals and nerve conduction

Effects of vagal neuromodulation on feeding behavior.

Implanted vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) for obesity was recently approved by the FDA. However, its efficacy and mechanisms of action remain unclear. Herein, we synthesize clinical and preclinical effects of VNS on feeding behavior and energy balance and discuss engineering considerations for understanding and improving the therapy. Clinical cervical VNS (≤30 Hz) to treat epilepsy or depression has produced mixed effects on weight loss as a side effect, albeit in uncontrolled, retrospective studies. Conversely, preclinical studies (cervical and subdiaphragmatic VNS) mostly report decreased food

Brachial plexus lesions after backpack carriage in young adults.

Carrying a heavy backpack exerts compression on shoulders, with the potential to cause brachial plexopathy. We evaluated the incidence and predisposing factors of compression plexopathy of the shoulder region in 152,095 military conscripts, hypothesizing that a low body mass index and poor physical fitness predispose to the plexus lesion. Reports of conscripts with neural lesions of the upper arm associated with load carriage were reviewed retrospectively for details associated with the condition onset, symptoms, signs, nerve conduction studies, and electromyographic examinations. Height, weig

Cardiac sympathetic-parasympathetic interactions.

The cardiac response to neural activity in one autonomic division depends on the level of activity in the other autonomic division. The extent of this peripheral interaction varies considerably with the cardiac effector tissue under consideration. In sinoatrial nodal tissue the effect of efferent sympathetic activity is progressively attenuated as the level of vagal activity is increased. A similar type of interaction prevails in the regulation of atrioventricular (AV) junctional pacemaker tissue. Surprisingly, however, an analogous peripheral interaction cannot be detected with regard to the

Responses of model cortical neurons to temporal interference stimulation and related transcranial alternating current stimulation modalities.

Objective.Temporal interference stimulation (TIS) was proposed as a non-invasive, focal, and steerable deep brain stimulation method. However, the mechanisms underlying experimentally-observed suprathreshold TIS effects are unknown, and prior simulation studies had limitations in the representations of the TIS electric field (E-field) and cerebral neurons. We examined the E-field and neural response characteristics for TIS and related transcranial alternating current stimulation modalities.Approach.Using the uniform-field approximation, we simulated a range of stimulation parameters in biophys

Restore axonal conductance in a locally demyelinated axon with electromagnetic stimulation.

Objective. Axonal demyelination leads to failure of axonal conduction. Current research on demyelination focuses on the promotion of remyelination. Electromagnetic stimulation is widely used to promote neural activity. We hypothesized that electromagnetic stimulation of the demyelinated area, by providing excitation to the nodes of Ranvier, could rescue locally demyelinated axons from conductance failure.Approach. We built a multi-compartment NEURON model of a myelinated axon under electromagnetic stimulation. We simulated the action potential (AP) propagation and observed conductance failure

Clinical efficacy of ultrasound-guided needle knife therapy for carpal tunnel syndrome: A meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials.

BACKGROUND: Ultrasound-guided needle-knife therapy has emerged as a widely adopted and clinically effective intervention for carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS), demonstrating significant therapeutic outcomes in clinical practice. However, there is currently a notable lack of systematic reviews and meta-analyses evaluating the therapeutic efficacy of ultrasound-guided needle-knife therapy in the management of CTS. Systematic review and meta-analysis to assess the effectiveness of ultrasound-guided needle-knife therapy in improving CTS symptoms, wrist function, nerve conduction, ultrasonic detection i
