Glaucoma is a silent progressive eye disease that is among the leading causes of irreversible blindness. Early detection and proper treatment of glaucoma can limit severe vision impairments associated with advanced stages of the disease. Periodic automatic screening can help in the early detection of glaucoma while reducing the workload on expert ophthalmologists. Both high myopia and glaucoma can have devastating effects on the visual function. Diagnostic tests and treatment can be challenging when both diseases are coexistent. This article discusses some of the typical problems in the management of glaucoma in highly myopic patients.

The author investigated a group of 80 eyes of 40 myopic patients, 20 of whom are treated on account of glaucoma (17 cases of primary open angle glaucoma and 3 cases of pigmentary glaucoma), another 5 patients were on the records with suspected glaucoma and in 15 glaucoma was not detected. The work is focused on possible differentiation of typically myopic papillary changes and the papilla of myopic eyes altered by glaucoma.

BACKGROUND: Alagille syndrome (AS) is one of six forms of familial intrahepatic cholestasis, all of which present with neonatal jaundice and paucity of intrahepatic bile ducts. Differentiation of these individual syndromes is crucial as their treatments and prognoses vary. It is the ophthalmic features, posterior embryotoxon on particular, that distinguish AS.
METHODS: The authors performed full ocular examination, including A- and B-scan ultrasound, refraction, and, where possible, fluorescein angiography in 20 unrelated children with AS and 8 with non-AS-related cholestasis.
