There is currently no standardized method for reporting audiological, surgical and subjective outcome measures in clinical trials with active middle ear implants (AMEIs). It is often difficult to compare studies due to data incompatibility and to perform meta-analyses across different centres is almost impossible. OBJECTIVE: To statistically analyse the hearing thresholds of two cohorts undergoing stapedotomy for otosclerosis with two different prostheses.
METHOD: A retrospective study was conducted comparing NiTiBOND (n = 53) and Nitinol (n = 38) prostheses.

Controversy exists concerning stapedectomy for patients with small air-bone gaps. The purpose of this study was to examine the results for patients who had a stapedectomy to correct a small (10 dB or less) air-bone gap. One hundred fifty-four patients with suspected otosclerosis were explored and a stapedectomy was performed in 136 (88.3%) of these cases. The mean pure-tone average (PTA) improved 16.7 dB and overdosed the preoperative bone conduction PTA by 8.1 dB. Four hundred and twelve consecutive stapes operations for otosclerosis performed by the author were analyzed. A fat wire stapedectomy prosthesis (Schuknecht) was used in 160 cases and a Fisch Teflon wire piston in 252 ears. Ninety-four percent of the patients with a fat wire prosthesis had a closure within 10 dB and the remaining 6% one within 10-20 dB. A novel X-ray stereoscopy technique, using greyscale information obtained from moving markers, was used to study the 3D motion in both gerbil and rabbit middle ear ossicles in the quasi-static pressure regime. The motion can be measured without visually exposing the ossicles. The ossicles showed non-linear behaviour as a function of both pressure and frequency. We analyzed the results of 604 cases of primary stapes surgery performed between 1974 and 1997 with replacement of the stapes by a 0.6- or 0.8-mm Schuknecht Teflon-wire piston. BACKGROUND: Sufficient ventilation of the tympanic cavity is a decisive factor for the success of the therapy and the prognosis after tympanoplastic surgery. With the postoperative use of the Valsalva- and Politzer-maneuver the patient is able to influence the aeration of the tympanic cavity in a positive way by autoinsufflation.
