Deficits in emotional expression are prominent in several neuropsychiatric disorders, including schizophrenia. Available clinical facial expression evaluations provide subjective and qualitative measurements, which are based on static 2D images that do not capture the temporal dynamics and subtleties of expression changes. Therefore, there is a need for automated, objective and quantitative measurements of facial expressions captured using videos. This paper presents a computational framework that creates probabilistic expression profiles for video data and can potentially help to automaticall

Contour curvature (CC) is a vital cue for the analysis of both form and motion. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging, we localized the neural correlates of CC for the processing and perception of rotational motion. We found that the blood oxygen level-dependent signal in retinotopic area V3A and possibly also lateral occipital cortex (LOC) varied parametrically with the degree of CC. Control experiments ruled out the possibility that these modulations resulted from either changes in the area of the stimuli, the velocity with which contour elements were actually translating, or perceived

PURPOSE: To determine whether binocular summation in visual evoked cortical potential (VEP) is present in patients who have significantly different P100 peak latencies in their two eyes.
METHODS: Twelve patients with unilateral optic neuritis (ON) and 11 normal controls were studied. All of them had visual acuity of > or = 20/20 in both two eyes and good stereoacuity. Transient and steady-state VEPs were recorded with monocular and binocular pattern-reversal stimulation.
RESULTS: In normal controls, the binocular summation ratio was 1.05 with transient stimulation and 1.21 with steady-state

UNLABELLED: The neural substrates of semantic representation have been the subject of much controversy. The study of semantic representations is complicated by difficulty in disentangling perceptual and semantic influences on neural activity, as well as in identifying stimulus-driven, "bottom-up" semantic selectivity unconfounded by top-down task-related modulations. To address these challenges, we trained human subjects to associate pseudowords (TPWs) with various animal and tool categories. To decode semantic representations of these TPWs, we used multivariate pattern classification of fMRI

Precise coordination between neurons and cortical areas is crucial for sensory perception, yet in vision, continuous fixational eye movements constantly shift retinal input. Traditionally considered random, these drifts modulate neural activity and may challenge the temporal precision needed for perceptual integration, particularly given their partial interocular independence. Recent evidence suggests that ocular drifts are not purely stochastic and play an active role in visual processing. Here, we investigated the impact of fixational eye movements on visual perception using a figure-ground

Our visual environment provides us with more information than we can process. Processing efficiency may be enhanced by leveraging inherent regularities in the environment, such as prioritizing likely target objects over unlikely ones. Although there is evidence that statistical learning improves visual working memory performance, it is unclear whether this improvement occurs through stimulus prevalence (how likely we are to encounter stimuli) or task relevance (how likely we are to use these stimuli). To distinguish between these two hypotheses, we examined whether frequent appearance, or freq

Conjunctive binding - as opposed to relational binding - refers to our short-term memory for integrated representations of a series of features into a complex - unitized - object. The mechanisms necessary to encode conjunctive representations in memory are, to date, unknown. In this study, we tested whether mental visual imagery and verbal coding are necessary to encode conjunctive representations in short-term memory. We also explored the memory processes supporting retrieval of these representations. To explore specifically the role of visual imagery, we tested a population of aphantasic par

Accurate real-world size perception relies on size constancy, a mechanism that integrates an object's retinal size with distance information. The neural time course of extracting pictorial distance cues from scenes and integrating them with retinal size information - a process referred to as scene-based size constancy - remains unknown. In two experiments, participants viewed objects with either large or small retinal sizes, presented at near or far distances in outdoor scene photographs, while performing an unrelated one-back task. We applied multivariate pattern analysis (MVPA) to time-resol

Our attention is influenced by past experiences, and recent studies have shown that individuals learn to extract statistical regularities in the environment, resulting in attentional suppression of locations that are likely to contain a distractor (high probability [HP] location). However, little is known as to whether this learned suppression operates in retinotopic (relative to the eyes) or spatiotopic (relative to the world) coordinates. In the current study, two circular search arrays were presented side by side. Participants learned the HP location from a learning array presented on one s

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) has been associated with suboptimal functioning of both the prefrontal cortex and the striatum. These abnormalities may impede the acquisition of perceptual categories, important for fundamental abilities such as object recognition and speech perception. While prior research has shown that children with ADHD perform comparably to neurotypical peers in visual category learning despite using suboptimal strategies, much remains unknown about how adults with ADHD acquire perceptual categories, where more mature functions may shape learning processes

Objects can be recognized based on their intrinsic features, including shape, color, and texture. In daily life, however, such features are often not clearly visible, for example when objects appear in the periphery, in clutter, or at a distance. Interestingly, object recognition can still be highly accurate under these conditions when objects are seen within their typical scene context. What are the neural mechanisms of context-based object recognition? According to parallel processing accounts, context-based object recognition is supported by the parallel processing of object and scene infor

BACKGROUND: To study motion perception, a stimulus consisting of a field of small, moving dots is often used. Generally, some of the dots coherently move in the same direction (signal) while the rest move randomly (noise). A percept of global coherent motion (CM) results when many different local motion signals are combined. CM computation is a complex process that requires the integrity of the middle-temporal area (MT/V5) and there is evidence that increasing the number of dots presented in the stimulus makes such computation more efficient.
OBJECTIVE: In this study, we explored whether anod

With the exception of primates, most vertebrates have laterally placed eyes. Binocular vision in vertebrates has been implicated in several functions, including depth perception, contrast discrimination, etc. However, the blind area in front of the head that is proximal to the binocular visual field is often neglected. This anterior blind area is important when discussing the evolution of binocular vision because its relative length is inversely correlated with the width of the binocular field. Therefore, species with wider binocular fields also have shorter anterior blind areas and objects al

Visual attention can be guided by past experience of regularities in our visual environment. In the contextual cueing paradigm, incidental learning of repeated distractor configurations speeds up search times compared to random search arrays. Concomitantly, fewer fixations and more direct scan paths indicate more efficient visual exploration in repeated search arrays. In previous work, we found that simulating a central scotoma in healthy observers eliminated this search facilitation. Here, we investigated contextual cueing in patients with age-related macular degeneration (AMD) who suffer fro

The spatial focus of attention has traditionally been envisioned as a simple spatial gradient of enhanced activity that falls off monotonically with increasing distance. Here, we show with high-density magnetoencephalographic recordings in human observers that the focus of attention is not a simple monotonic gradient but instead contains an excitatory peak surrounded by a narrow inhibitory region. To demonstrate this center-surround profile, we asked subjects to focus attention onto a color pop-out target and then presented probe stimuli at various distances from the target. We observed that t

The middle fusiform gyrus (MFG) and the inferior occipital gyrus (IOG) are activated by both detection and identification of faces. Paradoxically, patients with acquired prosopagnosia following lesions to either of these regions in the right hemisphere cannot identify faces, but can still detect faces. Here we acquired functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data during face processing in a patient presenting a specific deficit in individual face recognition, following lesions encompassing the right IOG. Using an adaptation paradigm we show that the fMRI signal in the rMFG of the patient,

It has been proposed that developmental dyslexia is associated with a deficit in the magnocellular pathway of the visual system. Other research focuses upon the heterogeneous nature of developmental dyslexia, and evidence that subgroups of dyslexia may be identified based on selective deficits in specific component reading skills. This study tested the hypothesis that visual processing deficits may be present in different subgroups of developmental dyslexia by comparing the visual contrast sensitivity of three subgroups of dyslexic children (phonological, surface and mixed) and controls. The s

Event-related fMRI was used to investigate lexical decisions to words of high and low frequency of occurrence and to pseudowords. The results obtained strongly support dual-route models of visual word processing. By contrasting words with pseudowords, bilateral occipito-temporal brain areas and posterior left middle temporal gyrus (MTG) were identified as contributing to the successful mapping of orthographic percepts onto visual word form representations. Low-frequency words and pseudowords elicited greater activations than high-frequency words in the superior pars opercularis [Brodmann's are

Children with spina bifida and hydrocephalus (SBH) have long been known to have difficulties with visual perception. We studied how children with SBH perform 12 visual perception tasks requiring object identification, multistable representations of visual space, or visually guided overt actions. Four tasks required object-based processing (visual constancy illusions, face recognition, recognition of fragmented objects, line orientation). Four tasks required the representation of visual space in egocentric coordinates (stereopsis, visual figure-ground identification, perception of multistable f
